Ah yes, it is that time of the year in Canada, Election time.  Although we do not have a set Election date like the USA, ours have to be within 5 years, except when the government get slammed with a non confidence vote like what happened to the minority one in December.

So, our choices are

1) the status quo "corrupt and we are balant about it" current government

2) the "we wish we could be real socialists" left leaning party that has recently found itself in the middle or

3) the "We are pleased to become the 53rd state, go ahead and take us like were in a prison shower" front runners.......

There are also a couple of "other" parties that are regional in nature or so low that the radar can't pick them up.

Who do you choose?  Why do you choose them? and how do I claim my 3 hours from work that i am allowed to us to vote, considering that today is my day off!!!!!!!!!

It's election day today and I still am undecided on who to vote for.  The thiefs?  The creeps?  The weaklings?    I think I may have to flip a coin when I get there.

Call me crazy, but I'm voting for the guy I think will best represent me and my riding. Unfortunately his party affiliation stinks, but I'm still going to vote for him.

I think you should just admit you're Americia Junior and be done with it. But if we do annex you, we will have to change your name from Canada to Claud....

That's how we roll....

I was just going to come here and start a thread on this.

I usually vote green, however, I don’t like the federal green party as much as the provincial green party. I can’t stand the conservatives, so I am thinking of voting for the Liberals, just to vote against the conservatives. Otherwise, I’d probably vote NDP. If it was a provincial election, then I’d vote Green, no question. I think there are a lot of people in the same boat as me.

On the other hand, the NDP candidate in my riding is pretty good. She’s, probably the candidate that I like most. But I dislike the conservatives so much. So any advice for me? I have less than 10 hours before I case my vote.

I'm a dyed in the wool conservative, and I am actually voting N[cough], D[gack], P[cough, snort]. The candidate is a former city counsellor, and I feel like he actually has intentions of serving the riding. The idea of an NDP government is SCARY, but I'm still voting for the candidate. I wouldn't vote Liberal if they paid me for their vote! While I'm not big on Liberal policies, my riding spent 40+ years being represented by a cabinet minister who did NOTHING for his so-called local riding.

The NDP party is full of idealism but lacking in common sense.  They got elected in Ontario as few years back and we ares still feeling the effects of their bungled management!

The Conservative platform is weak and contrived.  Wow, they plan to knock 2% off the GST ... but, wait a minute, wasn't it the Conservatives, under Mulruney, who saddled us with the GST in the first place?!?  I do not trust  Harper .... he scares me ... just look at this guy's eyes and tell me he is not a fascist!

The Bloc is a provincial party whose platfort is based on separation so it really does not count.  Anyways, Duceppe is as crazy as a shithouse rat.

The Liberal party has the best platform but is riffe with corruption, croniism, and out and out theft.  At least we know where we stand with these guys.  And hey, maybe Martin will clean house!

I'm just back from the voting booth (wife has the flu so I took our 4 year old daughter to get out of the house).

My first preference is to always vote for who is going to represent our riding the best and in our case I feel Dianne Ablonzy (Conservative) has done a very good job.

If I didn't have any one candidate that was better than the others then I guess I would review each parties platform and vote that way. While I don't feel all of the Liberals were involved in the Ad-Scam scandal, and the more recent Mutual Fund mess up, I do feel the Liberals need to be sent a message. They've been in power long enough and need to realize that Canadians feel there are alternate parties.

Do I think the Conservatives will do better or worse than the Liberals - I don't know but I think it's time for a change.

Please go vote - we're VERY fortunate to live in a free and democratic country.

I'm just thinking. The candidate in my riding means nothing to me because I am moving in 2 weeks. So I guess I should be considering the party leaders. I do not want Harper to lead this country. It's looking like a Liberal vote from me.

WHy have an election, in Canada, in January? I mean, are they trying to discourage people from voting? Why not July, when there's no snow and and it's not insanely cold (granted it's a relatively warm day, but it just as easily could have been 40 below and a blizzard).

There's no snow in Vancouver. We had snow once this year at the beginning of December, but nothing since. There's no chance that it could have been 40 below because I doubt that it has ever been 40 below here in recent history.

Still I get your point. Voters have been known to retaliate when winter elections are called.

BC is pretty temperate, kinda like the rest of the Pac Coast. I hear other parts of Canada can get chilly.

Hey Jim,

I know that you are a fan of wikipedia, so here you go.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_federal_election,_2006

The current government is a minority government. The election was called after a vote of non confidence was passed.

Why don't you give the elections a chance before yelling foul. Yes it's cold, but if you can't stand being cold for the small amount of time that it takes to vote you don't deserve the right to vote. The world, doesn't need to be, / isn't easy.

Yeah...NPR reported it pretty heavily after the non-con vote. ANd now that you mention it, I do remember something about how the election had to be held in x number of days after the vote.

Hold on there...I wasn't crying foul, just wondering why the election was being held in arguably the most difficult time of the year for voters to get out and cast their votes.

No Jim you are right about the weather. This is the first time in 26 years that we have had a winter election.

Ahhh...thanks, Jen. And BTW...I think there's more info on the Wikipedia page than I could wade through in a week. I guess our two-party system, if for nothing else, is better for it's simplicity.

After reading all of these posts I have just one thing that comes to mind.  I'm glad we're not the only ones who have a screwed up government that we either can't stand, don't like, don't trust, or can't agree on.

I, for one, wish we had the opportunity to have more than two parties with a legitimate shot at winning.  On the other hand, I'm sure we'd still have all the same problems.  I guess it's just nice to know that our neighbors to the north are as messed up as we are.  That should make eventual assimilation go that much smoother.

yes, we currently have some issues and I feel that I am inclined to vote a certain way, not because I want that party in power, but rather because they are better than the alternatives.  Seems like a lose-lose situation to me.. but off I go.. heading to the poles.
