It looks like I am going to have an interview next Tuesday. What is the best excuse you have used for not showing up to work? or at least being late? Plausible creativity is worth extra points!

Sick is always best. It gets you a couple extra days off as weel, cause calling in sick and coming in the next day just reeks of lie.

Of you could just tell them you can't come in because you need to tri train.

I don't mean to be a downer, but as someone on the other side of the equation I have a question.  I'm curious, if your prospective employer asked you, "Does your current employer know where you are and if not, how did you explain not being at work today?" how would you answer?  What would that tell him about your likelihood of treating him the same way as your employee?

Tell them you took PTO for the interview.

As for sickness, I have found the best route is to become increasingly more detailed the more they press.  No employer I've ever had has made it past explosive diarrhea

hangloose, that is a quality point. i have tried the "this job sucks and i thought i should let you know i am looking for a new one" and that is ok, but things get a little weird 2 months later when you are still looking. Do you have a better suggestion than playing the sick/car trouble/ my dog needs to go to the vet card??

I needed to leave early last Thursday for personal reasons. I went to my boss and said, "I just got a phone call and there's some personal stuff that I need to take care of. Everything is okay, I just need to deal with it." It was the TRUTH (what a concept!) and no one questioned me. Of course, I report directly to the owner of the company and he doesn't really care about those details as long as my work is done.
I would just say, "Hey, I have something personal that I need to take care of this morning and I'll be in the office by 10:30" (or whatever). It's the TRUTH (which is ALWAYS better than lying) and if they push you about it, say, "It's personal, I'd rather not talk about it, but my work will be handled." Let them use their imagination.

personal day is pretty good. I am already scheduled to have this friday off as a vacation day. I feel weird about two days off in two weeks.

Take it as vacation/personal day, whatever. They really have no business asking what you are doing on your days off (so long as it doesn't affect your days on).

Don't worry about taking 2 days in 2 weeks. If you are allowed to take vacation in one day or half-day increments, don't feel guilty. (A while back, while I was still eligible for OT, I took a vacation day midweek and came in Saturday to work. It felt weird, but I had a friend coming in from out of town, and they officially frown on simply trading a Saturday for other weekday.)

Don't lie, but you don't have to answer every question either.

Good Luck!

It might tell the interviewer something about the likelihood of being treated the same way. However, it may also be an indication of the interviewee currently working for a person who isn't  particularly reasonable.

The one time I was up front with an employer about looking for another job, I came to work the next week and was told I'd been replaced by someone "who wants to work here. Here's your last check".

I've been on the opposite side.

An employee called in sick, when in fact I found out later he was flying to another city for an interview.

We missed a deadline, and it threw a very bad taste in my mouth.

I will no longer be a favorable reference for that ex-employee because of that.

It really rankled me as he had plenty of vac. days, and knew about it long enough in advance that he could have simply used one of those.  Or taken a 'personal day' which we also allowed.

Please don't read anything into what I asked earlier in the thread.  I was just curious what your thought process was and trying to start conversation.  From the way you posed the OP I assumed you had no personal time to use.  I also wasn't trying to say anything about whether you should or should not say anything to your current employer about it.  I think it all depends on your circumstances.  There are situations when it's in your best interest not to be upfront with a current employer about what you are doing.  I've asked prospective employees that exact question when I'm interviewing them at 2pm on a Tuesday afternoon and the responses have ranged from smooth to honest to stammering to pathetic attempts to lie.

Whatever you do, just consider the consequences at your current job (see marmadaddy's post) and be prepared for the question at the interview.

Side note to Jim's post:  At my place if you are going to be sick for more than a day you go see a doctor and I'll cover your out of pocket expense.  My key people know that they can have whatever time off they need and it keeps the not-key people from abusing sick time off.  As far as my cost goes it's worth every penny.
