Pre-race routine:

Woke up early around 5 a.m., laid in bed and prayed that the Lord would bless my first race. It was quite the adventure involving state troopers, an ambulance and a giant. But more on that later. My friend Denise got to my house at 6 a.m. She was the official bag holder and picture taker. I made a strawberry, protein shake and was out the door. I didn't eat much just the shake and drank Gatorade on my way there.
My car is a 1997 Buick Regal GS. Cassandra, that's her name, has a v8 engine and a Supercharger under there. When she gets on the highway she loves to pretend she's in a Mazda commericial, ya' know "Zoom, Zoom." Anyway we top speeds as much as 100 mph on the highway making an 1hr trip into a 1/2 hour one! I was so busy tootling along that I didn't see the state trooper going in the opposite direction. Finally, I slowed down. As I passed, another state trooper, got on the highway and began to follow me. Ugghhh. Cops, make me so nervous especially when I'm doing something wrong! :) He of course pulls me over.
"What's your hurry," he asks. "Another state trooper clocked you going 70 mph!"
I'm a nervous wreck by then. All I'm thinking is give me my damn ticket so I don't miss racking up my bike on time! :)
"I'm going to the triathlon, I have a race," I say meagerly, as Denise shows him our race course and maps.
"Oh, you're racing to a race," he smiles. "Alright then I'll just give you a warning!" Wow, just say triathlon and men melt, it's a good thing because I really wasn't ready to show him any skin! :)
So after that Cassandra got punished with cruise control. Got to the event and had to park a half mile back. Still got there plenty early and set up my bike. Then I spent about 45 agonizing minutes waiting on my swim heat. I ran into a few people I knew including Annie a woman who swims in my mastersswimming class. Her heat of course was last - the fastest. She swims 100 m in about 1:30! I had already scouted the course so I just spent the time talking to people and making sure my transition area was cool.
Swim
  • 13m 39s
  • 525 meters
  • 02m 36s / 100 meters
Comments:

I'm a little disappointed on the swim. My time was a LOT slower than I wanted. I did a circle swim with two other ladies, someone who was much faster and someone much slower. I kept having to pass her and finally she let me get in front of her. I ended up finishing more than 30 ahead of her.
What would you do differently?:

I would have tapped the slower girl's foot earlier and taken the lead. I think as I swam behind her I adapted to a slower pace but once I got in front of her I just surged.
Transition 1
  • 03m
Comments:

This could have been faster! I just couldn't get my fanny pack on and it turns out I didn't need it. The girl whom I passed on the swim was waaaayyy ahead of me on the bike because of my tranistion time.
What would you do differently?:

Dump the fanny pack!
Bike
  • 56m
  • 12 miles
  • 12.86 mile/hr
What would you do differently?:

Learn about my gears
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

Good transition but I couldn't find the scorer's table. So I'm sure that added to my time.
What would you do differently?:

Know exactly where I'm supposed to check in for the next leg.
Run
  • 46m
  • 3 miles
  • 15m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

I ran the first 1.5 and then walked up hills etc., and then ran the last half mile in. I would have liked it faster but it's not bad for a girl who just started running two months ago! :)
What would you do differently?:

Run more, more hill training.
Post race
Warm down:

I was so high from finishing I forgot to get a massage.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Concentrate on the swim more and get better prepared for the running course.

Event comments:

Overall, I was disappointed with my swim time but pleased with the bike and even the run considering the hills. But all that crap doesn't matter because guess what gang????? I'M A TRIATHLETE! WHOO DOGGIES, I ROCK!
Photos to come!!!!

Congratulations Ovetta. But be honest now, did you not flash a cute smile to that police officer to get out of a ticket???? Hmmmmmmm..... What is a fanny pack and why would you want one durning a bike leg? Also, what is this scorer's table? Did you not have a timing bracelet? Inquiring minds want to know!

Thanks one and all for your words of encouragement. We all know I couldn't have done it without you all. My legs are still hurting! Sorry to say but it's only gardening for me this week. Then it's back to training. O.
