Subject: RE: grand canyon ultra? If you're interested, I have a series of pics with captions in my album of when my son and I went across the GC in a day (10-11 hours ).
Not a true "ultra run", but our plan was to spend the night on the North Rim and hike back the next day. We carried the bare minimum of gear, but out packs still weighed in at ~20-25 pounds. We went in mid-Oct which is perfect weather down inside the GC, but temps were in the high 20s at night on the North Rim. We ended up catching a shuttle van and didn't hike back, but that's part of the story.
The point is; had we not carried packs to spend the night and went with a trail running set-up, we could have traveled lighter and easier. In retrospect, we probably could have done it ultra-style and been successful.
If you plan the food and water part carefully and be prepared for wide temperature extremes (we had 28 to 95 ), it's quite doable. Do NOT underestimate how hot it will be down inside regardless of the time of year you go.
I grew up in AZ and the GC is awesome. Been down inside and across several times and each time it's always an experience. |
