Not internet surfing, but water surfing.

I live on Lake Huron, where the 3 footer waves die out quickly. You have to seriously enjoy the sport to pick it up here (no board shops, very few select 'good days' etc). Any people frequent this sport?

I've never tried surfing, but I've seen waves on Lake Ontario that make you think you might be at the Banzai Pipeline on the north shore of Oahu!

I hardly believe that since lake ontario faces mostly North-south... perpendicular to the wind. The Canadian side of Lake Huron faces right into the wind... and it can get pretty scary - no pipeline though.

Oh trust me, when you see huge waves crashing over the breakwall that's a good 15 feet high, that "north-south deal" is pretty irrelevant!  Despite the direction of the shoreline, offshore winds often blow directly south into Sodus Bay and bring some entertaining action.  Being out there fishing for salmon in big waves is quite the adventure!

Former surfer, for about 10 years. I grew up in Florida and went to school in Daytona Beach before transferring to Georgia Southern. Even there, I was only an hour from the beach. Moved to LA after graduation, but pretty much gave it up when we moved from there.

Some day I'll take it up again.

I surfed in high school but I wouldn't call myself a real 'surfer' I liked to do it occasionally when my friends that had extra boards went. Its really fun. If I end up by the water again I'm going to buy a board so I can do it more often. Its great.

Surfer mostly in mind and spirit, however I was in LA visiting a friend many years ago and he took me night surfing.  That's a good time.

WE have three boards in the garage- two short, one long.   Before kids, we used to go out every weekend to Cocoa Beach and sleep in the van and be total beach bums.   Jim, if you ever come out here, stop by, we'll grab the boards, and go out.  WE took the kids out on Bradenton beach for small waves and they loved it.  They even got up!  But I want them to be stronger swimmers before we take them out again.

St. Anthony's? Thw left coast of Fl doesn't get much surf, but occasionally. Hopefully there won't be any tropical activity that weekend...

Lived in Hawaii for 2 1/2 years and never managed to get very good at it. Body boarded alot (rode drop knee) but I guess I am too big of a klutz to ride a long board. In fairness the first time I tried to surf was at Haleiwa (North Shore) Park in January with 10 ft waves. Not a very wise idea.

Anyone see the documentary "Unsalted"? I saw it last fall and was amazed! It's all about surfing the Great Lakes. Here's the link:

I've tried it in Bali and in Hawaii, but I wasn't very good. I mostly used the board to lay out in the Ocean and suntan.

There's good surfing on the coast here in Tofino. At least that's what I hear.

oneword - 2006-03-16 1:14 PM I body surf all the time at Tybee Island in Georgia. Great way to deliberately get massive quantities of salt water into your sinuses mixed with a bit of radiation (there's a lost nuke bomb buried in the sand near Tybee - supposedly no bomb core, but you also have to keep in mind there's radiation coming out of the Savannah River too)...

Heh...Tybee. That was my home-away-from-home when I was in school in Statesboro. Such fond memories of pre-dawn trips in the winter, temps in the 20s. The heat  in my '72 Superbeetle blasting, dreading getting into the 48 degree water.

Good times...

Grew up in Pensacola, and then lived in Jacksonville for about three years. During that time in J-ville me and my friend went surfing about every day. Back then I was ridinga 6'8" custom made Elwood that was made in Puerto Rico. When I was in high school in P-cola I had a 6 foot something Shcroff/Schroff (spl) that was a water rocket. I could barely get up on that thing. Plus the waves in P-cola suck. Surfing is one of the hardest sports I have ever encountered, but when you drop in on that first wave man, yeah.

I don't want any west-coasters thinking their surf is small... this is the best we've got up here:

I've seen 'em pull 6' nurse sharks out of the water near the pier at downtown Tybee.

Nurse sharks are only scary if you're a crab.

I love to surf, and moving from San Diego to Chicago has been making me insane!!!!!!  I know people surf Lake Michigan in the winter but the water temp is in the 30's and they wear 6/7 mm suits and hoods/booties...screw that!  lol

Anyway, despite being in chicago for almost a year and a half I still check the reports at surfshot.com daily.  Wind and Sea was going off this morning!
