Subject: Bike Commuting- what to do with all your stuff??

I usually carry a back pack when I commute to work that has my clothes, lunch, shower stuff, wallet and all that stuff in it.  Only problem is that it's hard for me to turn my head and see what's behind me (when I need to get over in a different lane) when I'm riding.  To me, wearing a backpack is almost a safety hazard.  We have a locker room at work and I have my own locker so that I can keep most of of my shower stuff in there, and work provides towels/washclothes so I don't have to worry about that.  But any ideas what to do with my clothes and lunch?  I can keep non-persihable snacks in my desks, but I've had problems leaving my other food in the work fridge/freeze overnight and it's been eaten.  I have thought about trying to plan ahead and put my clothes in my locker the day before.  Not sure what do about food.  Any other suggestions from commuters would be appreciated!

If I know I'm going to bike commute, I try to bring in everything the day before, including clothes and my lunch (most of the time my lunch is left overs with some other non-perishables). After the ride, I'll throw all my sweaty stuff in a plastic bag and then inside a backpack and keep it under my desk.

Do you also keep extra bike attire at work as well?  Reason I'm asking because if my morning commute clothes get all sweatty I'll need a different outfit for the evening commute.

they air/dry out during the day! i squash my clothes and fodo into a bag - they don't take up that much room. i leave my shoes and a spare woolie in work. used my car to bring those in.

anybody else not have showers in work and has to be all sweaty?

Man- I have it good! My work place has a locker room with showers, and even blowdryers!  And they provide towels.  I don't know what I'd do it I coudn't shower- I sweat BAD.

Ok- so is it ok to wear "dirty" bike shorts?  I've never re-worn bike shorts.  I mean, if they're dried, if they've been sweatty isn't there a chance that you get a butt rash or something because of the possible bacteria??

In order to avoid problems like that, I'll actually bring my bike to work in my car, bike home, then bike back in the morning.

That way I can leave all my work stuff either at work, or in the car, and I can wear a clean set of bike clothes.

Not your typical bike-to-work, but same net effect - it saves me a round-trip commute in the car.

Do a quick wash of your stuff in the shower and blow dry it....if you're concerned about wearing dirty clothes....

Maybe this is so obvious nobody is suggesting it because you've already discounted the idea, but what about rear saddlebags for the bike?  I know they may not be "cool" and I don't know if you have a separate race bike/commute bike, but it seems to me like they would solve your problem easily.

I have a rack and panniers. I also have a mini locker at work and shower and towel racks, so I keep my shower stuff and my towel at work. I have a spare set of work shoes that I leave under my desk. So the only thing that I need to put in my pannier is my work clothes for the day (if you roll them, they won't wrinkle), my lunch and my laptop. They all easily fit in one pannier, so if you get two, you'll have room to spare.

As for the ride home, yeah, I usually just put the still-a-little-sweaty clothes back on, but after a little while, I'm sweating again anyway, so I don't even notice. It works really well for me.

I also have a locker and showers at work. I will stock my locker with extra clothes when I drive in.

I ride with a CamelBak FlashFlo which is a waist-pack setup. In addition to the 45oz of water, I stuff my wallet and cell phone in it. My multi-tool, spare tubes (2) and patch kit are in a seat bag.

When I commute, I'll rinse out my clothes real well in the shower and then I'll hang them in the shower area to dry during the day. I'll re-wear them for my ride home, although often they are still damp.

I'll usually eat in the cafeteria at work or walk and pick up something closeby.

I work at a Law Firm in south kansas city, we used to be ont he plaza (downtown) we showers and locker rooms etc, now we have sinks. A little off topic, but i run every lunch break and come in all sweaty and re-faced. no where to shower, so i wipe down in the sink and hang my clothes on a litte fan under my desk. I just deal with it.

Here is what works for me and I have been riding to work for 5 years now... spring, summer, fall.

Get a beater bike, don't worry about how it looks or how much money you have in it. Don't worry about clipless pedals, jerseys etc. Just get on the bike and go to work. messennger bags work great to haul your stuff. A milkcrate on the back on the bike on a rack works great, backpacks work great.

Get over the idea of fancy gear and ust remember how fun it is to ride a bike.

I take my bike on the bus in the morning, with a backpack of gear. Then, I bike home. I bike almost exclusively on bike trails or restricted roads (bike/bus only). So, I do often wear the backpack home again. On the days I run home, then I bring double stuff and leave it at work and bring it back home the next day on the bike.

We have showers at the gym here - but it doesn't open until I've already been working for a couple of hours. And, I sweat far too much to not shower after a workout.

This is a post about commuting and these are some tips i have to offer. Additionally don't view the biek as your sport (tri) but view it as fun and transportation.

These are all great suggestions.  Thanks for starting this thread.

I'm gearing up to start commuting by bike this spring.  There are some great ideas here.  I'm concerned about being presentable once I'm here (the curse of the white girl... really red face after exercise).  I'm going to stock up on some necessities at work.... an extra makeup bag, a hair dryer, some "sponge shower" items.  I'm still not sure how to do the clothes... but I'm sure with a big enough bag I can get them here without too much wrinklage.  I will have to carefully segregate my food and my clothes... it would not do to wear my leftovers all day.

Also, if you don't want to have to worry about your hair, just shave it.  It's soo much easier- I don't have to worry about a brush, styling products, conditioner, etc.
