Pre-race routine:

Woke up in the Lejeune Inn, most hospitable place in the city. Coffee was waiting, had a Clifbar as well. Showered, shaved, dressed, and headed to City Park.
Event warmup:

Parked at the finish and ran the course backwards with Joel (Tri-Pirate). By the time we took a few wrong turns and ran along the river, we had logged 7.25 miles at a 9:26 pace.

After that, we found Angel, Haley, Aaron, Laurie, and Jeremy in the quarter. Everyone got into their costumes, hula skirt and lei for me, the others in more extensive costume, they got interviewed by a camera crew. Then, hit the portapotties, had another Clif Bar and water, then lined up for the race.
Run
  • 53m 45s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

Typical CCC, too hot and crowded, went out a little too fast, overcompensated in Mile 2, then settled down at a comfortable-hard pace. Didn't push too hard until the end because this was a 13+-miler, in total.

Splits for the 10K:

1- 08:17.0
2- 09:20.0
3- 08:44.0
4- 08:35.0
5- 08:32.0
6- 07:49.0
0.2- 02:28.0
6.2- 53:45.0

What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Approached this as a hard training run, more of a pace run than a race.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked to the stadium, had three 24-oz Gatorades, grazed on the munchies, then sat in the bleachers and took a nap until Angel and the others showed.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm pretty sure it was that green grass skirt. Next time I'm going RED all the way.

Event comments:

Crescent City is always a blast, made more, uh, interesting with the crazy bunch of BTers on hand this year. crowds were somewhat smaller than in previous years, though, fewer residents in the city post-Katrina, also limited hotel availability for the out-of-towners.

Love the 7.2 "warm-up"

So nice  meeting you and Angel today.  Looks like you had a great run.  If you add a lotof speed work to your training and maybe next year you will win Angel that Norweigan cruise

Did you have red running shoes?  Maybe that's why you were so fast!

LOL! You look awfully peeved for a dude in a grass skirt. Way to make a 10k way harder than it has to be. Nice run!

Nice race John. It was great meeting you and Angel.

I can't believe you ran the course backwards and then did so good.  Way to go!
