A 7 y/o girl was bitten by a shark while she played in the surf at Coligny Beach yesterday afternoon. She sufferred lacerations to her foot and buttock. A shark's tooth was found in her wounds. She was treated at HH Medical Center. This is the beach where we do the HH GoTriSports sprint tri.
Leaving now to load my kayak and harpoon. (just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water)

This is why I wish I were competing in the mid-west...lakes & ponds only. I do so hate open water ocean swims. Even though the odds are better that I will hit the Powerball lottery then get attacked by a shark, it is ALWAYS a thought in my mind as I swim in the ocean. Thanks alot Peter Benchley.

Next HH race is in Sept. Now that I have that pesky Zawakari out of theway I can concentrate on killing sharks.
She was near the shore only in about 1-2 feet of water. This is where most attacks take place. Sharks looking for crabs, etc in zero viz water..just going by senses other than sight sometimes mistake humans for food. Since they are swimming along biting everything that moves this sort of thing happens. Sorry for the child but will not affect my ows..that is until I'm bitten.

She wasn't attacked so much as she was bitten. Just a few puncture wounds, similar to what you'd get if a dog bit you. But how many people would stop running if they heard about a dog bite in their neighborhood?

It's not a big deal at all.

Missouri girl bitten by shark off Hilton Head Island

Associated Press

A 7-year-old girl from Missouri was bitten by a shark while playing in 2 feet of water, Beaufort County deputies say.

The girl suffered puncture wounds to her foot and buttocks in the attack Wednesday afternoon, but the injuries were not life-threatening, deputies said.

Lifeguards and others on the beach first thought the girl had been stung by a stingray, but the doctor who treated her found a shark tooth embedded in her foot, authorities said.

The girl is the daughter of Amy B. Wallis of Ballwin, Mo., according to deputies, who did not have the child's name.

An average of three shark bites are reported on South Carolina beaches each year, said Charles Farmer, author of the book Sharks of South Carolina and a 38-year veteran of the Department of Natural Resources.

The last shark bite reported on Hilton Head Island was in 2001, according to the archives of The Island Packet newspaper.

The last fatal shark attack off the island occurred in 1883, according to the Florida Museum of Natural History.

Sharks often get closer to shore as the ocean waters warm and the bait fish they eat get closer to the beach, said Al Stokes, manager of DNR's Waddell Mariculture Center

Russ, you need to clear the water for me. I lovelovelove ocean swimming but not so keen on being shark-bait.

You people who live on the East Coast are much braver than those of us who vacation in your states. I'd honestly be afraid of swimming in the ocean. I've seen Deep Blue Sea. I know what's going on.

That's kind of scary since I vacation a few times a year on a nearby island. But when you're my size you don't worry as much. I'm way too big to be confused with a seal or any other typical shark fare.

What? You haven't heard the old Serengeti maxim: you don't have to be the fastest antelope to elude the lion, you just have to not be the slowest.

For those of you close to there, how far away is Kiawah Island from Hilton Head?

I've already paid my money to race, just want to know if I need a chainmail wetsuit?

jim,
i have heard that indeed, but i prefer not to think of that way. i figure if the shark is going to get me. it will be the night after the race when i have had too much to drink and decided it is a good time to go naked body surfing.

I go to Edisto which is about 45 minutes North. My in-laws have a beach house there and we go about once a month in the summer. We affectionately call it Dead Head. By the way, I have caught a few 3-4 foot sharks fishing from less than 1/2 mile offshore.

FYI Kiawah is about 75-90 minutes north of HH.

I'm going to the Charleston area in a couple of weeks.  I have been thinking about whether or not I should practice my OWS early in the morning when I normally workout on a family vacation.  Is this something I need to worry about or should I swim away?

They're more active at twilight & night, not sure about early mornings.

Thing is - they're always out there - there are more than 50 species that live off the Carolinas - but for the most part, they don't want to be around people anyway.

I had a similar bite when I was about 19. Little nip on the foot. No big deal. Don't even have a scar any more.

Saw a small one of Tybee last week in about 3 feet of water. My 8 month pregnant wife almost stepped on it and a stingray right beside it.

Keep it in perspective shark bites are rare you have a far greater chance of being killed in the car ride to the OWS or hit by the beer truck while doing an open road bike ride, or a random victim of a drive by shooting, or choking on a piece of steak, or or or.
