Subject: Beginners' Swim Pull Tip from Yanti

Something that another poster asked about (other strokes) reminded me of this, and it's a useful mental image and drill that's helped many beginning swimmers/triathletes who are more comfortable with breaststroke start to make the transition to a solid freestyle pull.

Most beginner swimmers who can manage the breaststroke are a lot closer to freestyle than they think.
The pull in breaststroke and freestyle are nearly identical.
Look at #2 and #3 below (taken from Gator Swim Team, Coach Steve Franklin).

I've asked newer swimmers to try doing the breaststroke with the same pull they do in freestyle (usually a straight arm windmill pull). They can't. Somewhere here, it clicks that doing freestyle with a breaststroke pull is the way to go.

Ignoring legs/kick for the moment, I have them glide, then pull breastroke with one arm only. (Similar to several sculling drills). At some point, I get them to rotate their bodies slightly to the pull side so they can breathe as they pull.

Again, this is just a start, and a drill. There's no magic formula or trick, and different images and metaphors will help make things click for different swimmers. It's just that this one has helped so many okay-breaststrokers struggling-freestylers to make that transition, so I wanted to share it.

Ooh.  Nice.  If I'm not a beginner, can I still use it?

You can breaststroke all you want, darlin'.

I actually do breaststroke very mindfully in the pull, thinking about freestyle, and I don't swim it competition style anymore, since some of the motion is used to pull the head and upper body up out of the water. I pull back as much as possible and stay much flatter in the water than I would doing a competition breaststroke.

I also do some pull IM (Individual Medley for others reading), and so that's straight up breaststroke pulling. Really helps isolate pull mechanics since you WILL NOT go anywhere if you aren't doing it right!

wow, after reading this i had to stop and punch myself in the head.

Just got back from the pool , and well, i've been doing it wrong all along.

I used to be a decent breaststroker, so this makes perfect sense to me, however, rather than pulling out to the side, i've been pulling bascially to the other side of my body.

Can't wait to go back tomorrow and implement.

punches self in head again

I squealed a little when I saw a "Beginner's Swim Pull Tip From Yanti" thread. I think there should be a weekly Yanti's Swim Tip of the Week thread.

Thanks Yanti, I will try this in the pool tomorrow, although I'm not a really good breaststroker so I might do it wrong!

Images #2 & 3 in your diagram...the elbow is moving forward relative to the wrist. in all the strokes this mental effort of moving elbows forward continuously is a key trick to getting solid purchase (less evident in backstroke)
