How can there not be a thread in honor of my new favorite Olympian???

How great was that performance yesterday?  She goes out there and qualifies for a race...then 10 minutes later, wins a gold medal in the 100 meter backstroke!...but that's not what made her my favorite...

Her humility and enthusiasm was a welcome change.  She seems so grounded and mature for her age, 17.  She lives at home, goes to her own high school...just seems like a normal kid.  And how great is it when you hear an athlete remarking how much FUN they are having?!  I love that!

Have you checked the Olympic Forum?  All the threads about the olympics have been going in there rather than CoJ in most cases.

Sorry!  My bad...I am so used to popping into COJ, I didn't even realize there was an Olympic Forum!  My bad.  Thanks for the tip.

We're fans in this house. Even my 6 year old son keeps talking about how he likes the American swimming girl who is still in high school .

I've become a fan as well.  i watched the piece NBC did on her today where they talked about how she's turned down all endorsements so she could still swim on her high school team and in college.  Can you imagine lining up next to an olympic gold medalist at a high school swim meet?  haha

Laughed about this when I heard she was still on her HS team. My lord, its just a race for a distant, distant second place when she is racing, I assume.

I make it a point to have my 12 & 9 year old daughters watch anytime Missy is either profiled or is racing. My 2 girls are very involved in sports, and I want them to see someone who isn't that much older than them excel on the world stage, and to see how its done while being yourself.  Great example I think. Wish her nothing but the best in this and her future Olympic races!

I just can't say enough good things about this girl. The fact that she factored in her own happiness into her decision making in terms of training is just so impressive.

That is the one thing about the Olympics that has always blown my mind. It is really the only stage a teenage can shine. Sure they are extremely talented and they know they are good...but how do you go to the Olympics and perform on that stage at that age... blows my mind.

Definitely the new America's Sweetheart in the making.  I can see it now....at least another olympics, maybe two, then retiring, getting a talk show, being an ambassador, role model for young kids.  Not only does she have athletic talent, she has that charisma and infectious personality.  The sky's the limit for this girl.

Lastest fun story about her: Apparently she blew off a day or two of Olympics prep to be sure she was available for her HS swim team who had a big meet. I'm going to guess she won her events.

My 9 year old has a swim meet today so I just called the house and told her "Go get her, Missy!" .

That's the exact thing I thought.  Props to her, but that sucks for all the other schools they compete against.

How many high school swim team members can now say they're the world record holder in their event??

She's getting a lot of coverage here and is very much a favourite of Canadians too - given she has dual citizenship and her parents are Canadian. She is interviewed by Canadian media after all of her races as well - we love her. She is an amazing young woman.

Interesting fact - her aunt is the team doctor for the Canadian women's soccer team.

OMG! (and I normally don't use hip acronyms) this Missy Franklin has got to be my favorite Olympic athlete ever.  How great was that interview with Bob Costas tonight?  Absolute perfection.  Forget the gold medals, this girl was as good as gold before any medals...I could not be more proud of an American athlete.  I've still got tears in my eyes.

That interview was incredible!  Her deadpan "we don't have any fun here" made me laugh SO much!

I hope all those colleges she mentioned have their A game ready for her visits...I see a fight coming on to get her!

She'll have another awesome Olympics in Rio...then the endorsements will roll in (after she finishes swimming for her college team).  Bright bright future.  I bet she's that masters swimmer still competing in 60 years....

And ya know what?  Even if she had some tragic injury that took swimming away between now and Rio, she seems like the type of person that would be just as happy and appreciative of her life...endorsements or no endorsements...money or no money.

She is a true role model...and in my opinion, the greatest Olympian in the world!!!

...and yes, that deadpan, "we don't have any fun here," was awesome!  Such poise and comedic timing!  Hopefully her parents can continue to put her in situations that maintain her well-grounded nature.

I think what most impressed me about that interview is that I doubt any of the other experienced swimmers could have done it better...especially not at that age.  I don't recall seeing a lot of Phelps interviews when he was a teen in his first Olympics, but you can tell how much more experienced he is at interviews than most of the USA's swimming team at this point.  Missy hasn't had all that experience...this is her first shot at it and she does as well as the veteran...if not better! :D

Totally agree.

Aside from the fact that Missy just seems like a smart, ebullient kid, I think the contrast between her and Phelps at the last two Olympics is the result of her more balanced upbringing. Missy, despite what I’m sure must be a grueling training regimen, also seems to at least have a little time when she gets to be an ordinary high school girl, hang with friends, have crushes on Justin Beiber, etc.

From all accounts, Phelps didn’t really do much other than swim from the time he was a little kid and he started working with his coach. In his interviews in Beijing, he came off as really socially inept—almost to the point where I remember people theorizing that he was somewhere on the autistic spectrum.

It seems like the last few years, where he’s been able to take some time off from swimming, gain some perspective, and have a little fun has made an immeasurable difference to him personally. He’s a totally different guy in interviews now.

I am practicing trying to be a recovering hipster, so the thing I am about to say would have made me roll my eyes then try to gouge them out a couple years ago...... but in all earnestness, I can say this:

I hope the #1 celebrity story next spring is that Justin Bieber is Missy Franklin's date for her senior prom.
