Subject: National anthem

As former military, I am most disturbed when I see people goofing off during the national anthem before a triathlon. Fidgeting, whispering to friends, stretching, looking at phones, bouncing up and down, or just not standing at attention/hand on heart.

Is this something anyone else is seeing? Is this not something that is taught in schools anymore?

Come on man, maybe it's their A-race!  They've got to get in the zone!

A few years ago, I was late to a race start.  I was several blocks away and you could barely hear the national anthem playing.  Anyway, I had my young son with me and I could tell he was slowing down for some reason.  I looked down and it was because he was trying to keep up with his hand over his heart.  We stopped until it ended.

I see it and it bugs me. Sometimes I'll give a loud SHHHHHHHHHH to quiet people, and that usually gets other people to join in the shushing. Sometimes I'll call out "RESPECT". I don't care if "you" don't care about the anthem, but please respect that many people do care.

I try to be still and quiet but if it's before a big race and I'm nervous I'm fidgeting about and shifting from one foot to another and moving around a little. Can't help it.

I hear people talking or goofing around but that's them. Not me. I don't care if they look like disrespectful aholes.

Was it the young 10 year old that was the problem or an adult?  Yes, for all of the school sporting events it is announced to remove your hats and have your attention to the flag of the United States of America.  Except at the Catholic schools where you do the Lord's Prayer and sometimes they do the Pledge of Allegiance or the National Anthem.  That is for the schools that we play in our conference in Iowa.  Not sure about the rest of the U.S.

If people would just be quiet.  That would be fine with me.  I can tolerate fidgetting.  But walking around and stuff bugs me too.  I remember in the Marine Corps being on a run and having to stop for "colors".  If you're not in-combat or doing a test course of some sort.  You stop and render appropriate honors.

They should add a "Penalty 2:00 - Failure to Render Appropriate Honors" to the rule book...

I see it, ignore it, and then tell myself that God has a place for people like that.

Hahahahaha first time I ever went to a game I was all `WTF!?' Some people think it's awesome, some people don't like it. I can say I thought it was pretty cool but at the same time I just stood there quiet.

What's up with the blackhawks game?  Is there some funny stunt they pull?

I was taught the hand over the heart is for the Pledge of Allegiance...for the National Anthem you remove your hat and stand.

I don't worry about the adults that act disrespectfully.

Brilliant. One day when I am a Race Director I will enforce accordingly.

The direspect bothers me.

I get goosebumps every time I hear the anthem.  I don't know if it is because of my military service; because I was a child during 1976 and the picture of the fifer, drummer, and flag carrier made an impact on me or my dad taught me a certain amount of respect.

Every time I hear the anthem I think of the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for us and I give a quick appreciation of the many freedoms we have.

I have to admit, my etiquette sucks.  I'm just not a formal guy.  That said, thanks for the tip.

I think respect for our National Anthem comes from parents....and that gets passed down from our parents, and grandparents....and their parents.  My Grandfather fought on Tarawa and Iwo Jima.....I once saw him cry when the National Anthem was played.  My children will respect that as part of being an American....it's not optional, the cost was too great, and it's the reason my children can enjoy the life they do.

It is my hope that they will pass it on because I explained why it's important, what it means, and what it costs to be able to stand and hear it. My kids stand with their hands over their hearts when our National Anthem is played....I'm proud they do.

That's all.
