If so, what do you do about your training schedule? Do you try to make up for it later? Blow it off?

What do you notice to trigger yours? I was worried when I read physcial exhertion can trigger them. As long as I don't get overheated or dehydrated or hungry, I seem to be ok. The Oklahoma heat isn' t always my friend in this area. Plus sometimes (like this week) they "sneak attack" me and I just get it, without feeling it coming on and then it is too late for my medication.

Do you notice anything that helps alleviate them? Massage, meds, anything?

I am so sick of them slowing me down...I've got races to run!

I get them monthy with my cycle if combined with lack of sleep. I take Imitrex. I only train after taking imitrex if the headache is 100% gone, and even then, just something light. It doesn't interfere with my training as much as it interferes with work...because that's where I usually get them.

I get them.  They're usually triggered by a lack of sleep and stress.  To help avoid getting them, I cut way back on caffeine.  I'm also on medication to prevent them because I was getting them to often.

If I do have a migraine, I take Zomig.  I don't train unless the headache goes away.  Doing something when the headache's there just tends to make it a lot worse when I'm done.  It sucks when they interfere with your life, but there's not much that I can do to stop them.

When I get migraines I usually wake up to it...horrible.    I have to force myself to eat some crackers or something then I take a big dose of caffeine and ibuprophen. It usually does the trick. I have a prescription for imitrex but I rarely take it because I get the side effect of feeling like I can't breathe.

Sometimes if I get very overheated and dehydrated...like going to the beach all day or riding in the hot sun... it will trigger a migraine.  I have to catch it early or I am doomed. (then I have to take imitrex).   I always wait till it's gone before working out.

Migraines do suck! I take Axert when I feel them coming on and have pain meds for when they just attack me. I've decided to do a shift in my thinking and instead of all the frustration I feel for not being able to be active, I will remember that it is ok to let my body rest for a few days. My migraines usually 3-4 days (ugh).
May your week be migraine free!

I get them, and it's food that triggers 'em. Any type of sausage (because of the sodium nitrate) will trigger a NASTY one. I also can't eat eggs, unless they're hard boiled and cold. Don't ask me why. Red wine, aged cheese, anything made with MSGs...those are all bad. Of course, if I'm eating healthy, (minus the eggs), I don't have problems with them. If I'm a guest at someone's house, however, and they offer me a piece of pizza, and a small piece of pepperoni is hiding under the cheese, LOOK OUT! That's when the migraine will start...usuallly within a few minutes.

Hi Everyone,

Just recovering from yet another migraine and wanted to see what other people had to say about them here. I also take medication to try and prevent (Depakote) and I take medication once I have one (Relpax). Both have imprved things for me. I have come across the two articles, thought I would pass it along:

I get them as well (22 in 12 mo's) but am not on any preventative meds. I've taken Imitrex in the past, but Maxalt now. I've encountered nearly all listed above, waking up with 'em, good response to meds, bad response, nausea, light sensitivity, pain in the same eye, etc. I've tracked mine for 1+ yr now and can't seem to pin them down to anything specific besides alcohol (dang, and I like beer!). Mine tend to come on in the AM, build to nausea and are gone by end of day without meds....thank goodness I don't have 3-4 day events like others. I feel your pain, folks.

A trend I DO notice is that I get them alot more frequently (i.e. 2 every 3 wks) in the summer vs the winter months (0-1 per month in Dec-March). I have got to believe this is related to me sweating more but am at a loss. I hydrate like crazy and I still tend to get 'em so am still looking for the magic bullet.

When I get a bad one, I too call it a rest day. Or, if I'm lucky enough that I get a med in time to nuke it I work in an easy bike or a late evening swim rather than anything strenuous.

I've been lucky enough to never have one on race day, but have had a few on the day prior to a marathon and done OK the next day.

Symptoms: My aura is the worst part. I get tunnel vision, my lips and finger tips get numb and I can think a word and it comes out garbled and mixed around when I say it. I only get one or two a year.

Triggers: Stress, Fluoro lights, stobing computer screens or when the Coke machine light strobes when it is abou tto burn out.

I don't take any medications for them as only rest and a dark room helps out. They are so severe that I feel bad for up to three weeks afterwards. Since I've ben training I have hadonly one. Yay!

I don't get them very often (a few times a year) but when I do, they are really bad.

I don't try and train through them, I'm in too much pain.

Triggers: stress, and just recently dehydration and heat - brought on a headache that turned into a migraine.  Nasty.

Once I get them: I take Tylenol with Codeine that I got in Canada.  Then I need it to be dark and quiet and I quite literally wrap my head in these flexible ice pack things that I have in my freezer, and I hold them on the worst spots which are usually my temples and behind one eye.  So if I hold the ice pack on top of my eye, it feels better.  Also, putting an ice pack on the back of my neck seems to help a lot. For some reason the super coldness really helps with the pain.  When I have a migraine, freezing my head sounds like a wonderful option.

My mother had these same issues with food too and then she had to have a total hysterectomy due to other reasons and after that her migraines all went away.  EXCEPT she still can't have balasmic vinegar.   That one thing will start to make her mouth water and then the head ache starts in about 5 minutes.

I so sorry to hear that there are so many of you that get these migraines, I really feel for you.

Since I've started training, I have had less migraines than ever. (Was averaging about 1 every one to two weeks.) I cannot get dehydrated, or hungry or the migraine strikes. Great for me I get to eat at least 6 times a day! I am down at least 3 days when I get my migraines.

I am getting ready to have to take a plane ride in a couple of weeks. Last time I flew it sparked the worse migraine ever, nausea and all that stuff. I believe that the pressure change induced that migraine and am wondering if any of you have had that problem with flying? Also do you have any suggestions? I am thinking about taking my migraine meds (Axert) prior to the flight, even if I don't need it, so that I won't get sick on the flight. Any thoughts?

Hey, there was an article recently (can't remember the month) that said that massage can help with migraines! Think insurance would cover that? I have decided that is reason enough to go get them. My massage therapist recommends one at the minimum of every three months. I try to go monthly!

After several years of 1x/year, my migraines are back full force. About 1/month lasting 3 days. Takes me out for one day entirely. I take Amerge, but hate how stupid it makes me, but def. rids the vision, pounding, nausea. Then, I just have a bad headache for a couple days, stay tylenol'd up, and work out and continue as usual. Mine are hormonal +  if I eat wine/cheese, red stuff, stress and lack of sleep. So, if the moon is right and I eat a piece of tomato, I can pretty much count on it. It's horrible. I have no advice... except...I do use accupressure. You could probably google it, but if you squeeze the skin in between your thumb and pointer finger with your other pointer and thumb, it alleviates some pain. Best of Luck. I wanted to reply so I could follow this thread til the end!

After suffering with the rare migraine, mine got to where they were 3-5 a month. After lots of different medications for treating the migraine at the onset, after it was there, yada yada yada...I went to see a neurologist . She ended up putting me on medication that works to block the migraine. With the exception of this last 2 weeks (ended up in emergency room with migraine Monday morning) I have been back to 1 every two to three months. I will occasionally get things that seem like a migraine without the pain.

Guess I say all this to suggest (and please do not take this as licensed medical advice) that if you are getting migraines too often, you might think about going to a neurologist and seeing what they have to say. I sure helped me.

I broke down and went to a neurologist myself.
Decided to go after a fellow athelete said "you are too healthy to get migraines all the time."
Too bad our training doesn't make them go away. Although I was having them weekly until I began a training schedule.
Lucky me the Doc. said "Well I think you have a migraine disorder". I thought "NO Duh!"
He did not think that I needed the beta blockers at this point, since they are only about once a month or less these days (knock on wood). He did prescribe me Lortab for the pain when I get the migraines.

I have thought about the alternative med things before, thanks for the info. I think I may try some accupunture for them one of these days.

Here's to a migraine free weekend!

BTW this heat is not helping the headache issues!

THe real value in seeing a neurologist is for him to rule out all the other nasties besides migraine. So if he agrees, then that should ease your worries a bit.

That is a great re-frame! I had some time there where I thought my headaches could be more! Thanks!

I get really bad migraines anywhere from once a week to every 3 weeks. I am starting to think they can be triggered by low blood sugar as I usually wake up with one. I take Frova, which is really expensive, but it works really well for me. I also take Troprol, which is a blood pressure medication that can also act as a migraine preventative, but it's not as strong or effective as the new migraine preventatives that are out. I mostly take it because I'm pre-hypertensive (genetic).

I had one a month ago that lasted for 2 weeks. That ended up making me go to see a neurologist. I had a CT Scan, bloodwork, etc, but nothing showed up, so I had no other issues, just regular migraines. Although I was having a migraine once a week, the neurologist didn't want to put me on one of the preventitive meds because there are a LOT of nasty side effects. They've been better since the 2 week long one. I tried to do some of my training during that time since my first race was a week after it ended, but it was pretty tough.

BUMP...

My doctor would like me to try a Beta-Blocker to be taken daily to prevent my reoccuring migraines..  Has anybody taken these with training?

Which one does he want you to take?

I don't think I was on a beta blocker.  I was on Topomax, which is an anti-convulsant.  I had a hard time with it.  I ended up feeling like I was shaky all the time and I couldn't really sleep.  I lasted a few months before I asked to be off of it.

It's probably worth a try, but keep track of side effects and call your doc if it starts interfering with the training.  There are a lot of options for different meds to prevent migraines.

I tokk Depakote for several years with little issue other than a little weight gain. Here is a little blurb about it:

Depakote affects chemicals in the body that may be involved in causing seizures.

Depakote is used to treat various types of seizure disorders. It is sometimes used together with other seizure medications. It is also used to treat the manic phase of bipolar disorders (manic-depressive illness), and to prevent migraine headaches.

I was quite happy with the way it worked for me. I went from 1-2 migraines a week at my peek to less than one a month while I was on it.

Stopped taking it within the last year after being diagnosed with sleep anea and being treated for that. Not sure how related they were, but I know that they were somewhat related.
