Subject: You can now print a working firearm.

With the new technology of the 3D printer people are now trying to print new complicated things such as lower receivers for AR-15's. Of course there are chicken little types now saying that everyone will be printing firearms but I really doubt it. A really good descriptive article lays out how they really just printed the lower of the AR and not the entire firearm.

I failed to correctly link the pages but here they are:

The last CSI episode was about this.  Some guy was wacking people but they bullets didn't have any markings/riffling.  Turns out the bad guy was 3D printing 1-shot disposable handguns.

I was going to mention the same CSI.  Didn't need rifling.  They were "up close in personal" as in the guy was in the back seat of the car.

I saw this machine at a community college next-door to the Ruger plant in Prescott, AZ.

Really cool, but not really some ground-breaking thing.  Machinists would still need to check the precision so the weapon didn't blow up and kill the shooter.

The community college also has a full gunsmith class that has a <50% pass rate because the cross between the art and the technical aspects wash-out a lot of folks.

I'd say that the idiots would likely not go to the level of designing a firearm that could be printed on a million dollar 3D printer.

Just sayin

I was just thinking the same thing...

$1 MM printer, plus the specific scrap metal, plus the power to run the printer, plus the machinist to make sure it doesn't blow up on you vs the $599 Walmart special for a weapon.

I don't think this is groundbreaking.

While we are on the same page I do want to point out that some 3D printers are down to 2k and can also be leased.

And you don't need a license to get one of these printers. Wait, you don't need a license to buy a gun at a gun show either. In that case, everybody should have one of these printers. For home protection, of course.

Is that why Annie giggles every time there is an Asian on TV. Always saying something like "it's so small"

That also explains why the shells of the shotgun were put in backwards and a note that said "your gun is broke"

I might be missing something, but I don't think the "idiots" in question are buying million dollar 3D printers to make their OWN guns.

H&K, Glock, Colt, etc are buying the million dollar machines (or some black market operation), and cranking out tons of cheap guns for the "idiots" to buy.

And for the record, unless their is a proven track history for safety, I will continue to buy the normally constructed/manufactured steel weapons.  (or steel components in a polymer frame, obviously).

I don't think I want to be the test group for gun technology when I can get cheap reliable weapons by legal means right now.  Shoot, a stock Glock is only 700 bucks at the local Bass Pro shop and there even WAY more inexpensive options.  That's less than a good night at a Vegas Strip club or bad night at the tables!  Cheap!

From a non-gun person; wouldn't the lower receiver/design be IP of the gun manufacturer? Isn't this a "pirated" version of a product? Are the specs needed for this to work available on the net?
