Subject: New iPad -- So, what do I do with this thing?
Was given to me at Christmas. Already have an iPhone, and the iPad seems to me to be little more than a bigger version of it, minus the phone (so a big iTouch, essentially). Am I missing anything on this or does that about sum up what it can/will do? Its fun for games, no doubt.

It's all what you put into it.

It has replaced my laptop for most business trips.  I can do email, minor word processing, Excel etc..  Web browse of course.  There are apps that allow you to connect to your work (or home) server or desktop so that you can access all of your files there.

I also use it to stream video from my home server (or from Netflix or Hulu etc..).  I can watch any of my movies anywhere in the world (with an internet or 3G connection).  We were in a hotel this last weekend and the wife and I watched 2 movies.

Another 3-4 years and I think tablets are going to replace laptops in *most* situations.

Enjoy! We travel a lot and it's capabilities really shine on a trip. Gps, reservations, web search while in the car, flight status, weather forecast, road info. Movies and books for a flight. Sure you can do all this with the phone, but the added screen real estate of the ipad make it much easier, especially in a moving vehicle!

An app I use is TIOD. You can reach shared drives and servers to use files stored elsewhere on your network. Another one I like, but is $10 is Goodreader. That allows you to use local copies of files without having to be internet connected. I need that when on sales calls.

With those 2, I can make it more business useable and less of a cool toy.

It has replaced my laptop for the most part for business needs.  As mentioned above, it is great for email, reports, light word processing/excel.  I can connect back to my office desktop if needed to do some minor research on items that I may need access. My calender, contacts, etc. sync from my office also.

I use the following apps for business application:

Dropbox - good for having documents offline and sync up documents to/from your office  computer as needed.  I use this for reports, agenda's, etc.

Quickoffice - to view/edit word processing reports/excel reports.

Evernote - to sync capture notes  that I want to hold onto for whatever reason.

PocketCloud - to connect back to my desktop, as needed.  Works pretty well.

LinkedIn - keep up with updates, industry news, etc.

For my personal life:

My bank app - can do some online banking via it.

WeatherBug - to keep up with the weather/radar when needed.

NetFlix - to watch movies, etc.

Credit Card - to keep up with my account, etc.

UrbanSpoon

Skype

Kindle - to read for personal and business

FlipBoard - to keep up with news sites, twitter, etc.

Spotify

Pandora

Google Music

Kayak - travel app

Overall, it's been good for both personal and business applications.  Easier to read and watch movies, etc. on the Ipad than on a phone. It's also easier to perform business functions on the Ipad vs. a phone.  The bigger screen just makes it easier.

I purchased the apple keyboard, which links with the Ipad and creates a mini-laptop of sorts to do more heavy typing if needed.

I'm sure there are endless more task/items that it can be used.

You don't need to hear the words or understand what they're saying, just watch.

Just like the iPhone, the screen is pretty fragile (must be Italian). So a case or cover of some kind is a good investment.

My kid dropped mine in a case on a tile floor and the screen was shattered. After Best Buy Warranty replaced it, I got a "military-grade" case that is ridiculously heavy but I don't have to worry about it breaking or getting wet or nuclear explosions.

I'm not a super user, but I still get plenty of time on it.

Mostly it stays in the TV room with me for quick internet access without going upstairs to the desktop for starting up the laptop.  The Ipad is basically just "on" all the time, so no bootup.

I mostly  use it for Youtube, BT, Fitbit, and IMDB.  Plus just surfing.

I have a couple games I really like.

I have a few art programs I use.

KINDLE is the mostly used app.  I do most of my reading on the Ipad now.

I have used it for taking pictures and movies since they are easier to share from the Ipad.

V1 for you golfers is a must.

BASICALLY, It's like a 7-11.  It doesn't have as much or is as good as a full grocery store, but it has a few unique things that are great and it's REALLY convenient.

Haha!  I forgot the "real" reason I got it.  The wife goes on a lot of auditions, so she has all her photos/headshots on the Ipad and examples of her film work on it and on Youtube.  She can just open it up and let them browse without taking her giant book.

Just google best apps for ipad and read away.  There are things you never knew you never knew.  I love "magic piano" and "ising".  But there are thousands of apps that make your life more fun and easier and tons for free.  Just look
