Subject: Swim mentor or why a future coach needs your help.

Good day,

Recently, I have started to think that I might want to change my career for something more self fulfilling, something that will benefit others more than excel spreadsheets and reports . Coaching seems very interesting and appealing. After talking to some coaches on BT, I was advised to start from being a mentor and see if that is something I want to do in the future.

So the purpose of this thread to see if there is anyone who willing to give me a shot to be his/her swim mentor for some time. I does not matter if you are training for triathlon or just want to be a better swimmer. Whether you need a second pair of eyes, help developing your plan or some technical tips, I will be glad to assist you.

Why am I doing it and why I am sure I can do the job?

As I mentioned before I want to see if coaching would be something I `d want to do full time. Plus, while I am working towards my Canadian Coach designation, I`d figured I start gaining some experience.

I have been swimming 22 years now, seen many sides of the sport, made to Junior National Team, have some open water swim experience. I started to race in triathlons 2 years ago, completed Ironman Kentucky, made top 3-5 in my age group in some Southern Ontario races. I love both sports and while I have a lot to learn about triathlon I feel very confident about my swimming knowledge. People in my local Y ask me for some tips and seem to improve after, which is very pleasant for me.

In addition, I have a Swim Coach Diploma from Ukrainian Sport College where I had been studying a theoretical side of the sport for two years.

So if you are interested, please email me at [email protected] or reply to this thread.

Nick

P.S. I`d like to state that I am not going to charge you a penny for anything aforementioned.

Maybe... what's involved?  I'm an okay swimmer.  Learned as a kid and haven't taken a lesson since.  Just started a masters swim Tuesday and Thursday but I wouldn't mind finding ways to improve.  I'm also downtown Toronto.

I live just north of the city so consistent mentorship is probably not possible but would love to see a weekly or bi-weekly open water swim group started up under your mentor/leadership once the weather warms up. Let me know.

Hi there,

I have been thinking about organizing the open water sessions. And it is great news that I have the first volunteer. I will keep you posted.

If you happen to be somewhere downtown of TO, let me know we can arrange a meet in one of the pools. One life session is much better than 20 emails.

I would second the above.  I live west of TO (Oakville) and so regular sessions downtown are not practical, but would definitely be interested in a weekend open water swim group (weekly or bi-weekly).

I would love a bi-weekly rotating swim - oakville one time, downtown another, scarborough another, thornhill another... there is a great site near me (Thornhill) - I'd be happy to host a post swim breakfast at my house also.

That is one great idea. I already have 5 people who would love to do so.

I'd be up for a swim on the West End.  Kelso out in Milton comes to mind as it's right off the 401, and I would imagine not too far for most other on the west end.

I live in Toronto - if you're still looking for volunteers, count me in. I normally swim at the Main Square Community Centre by Main/Danforth, but could easily come downtown for sessions. My gym is downtown, but it doesn't have a pool.

I'd also be up for open water sessions come warmer weather - although I don't have a car, so I'd only be in for sessions I could get to - like down in the Beaches. Unless other locals were interested in carpooling in exchange for gas money.

Either way - best of luck!

Add my name to the list for a west end gig. Kelso would be great, but I'm open to any where on the west end.

Another reason Kelso would be good... you could do a bike workout after the swim. Hill repeats on Appleby Line anyone? LOL

You're a glutton for punishment!

Only if it is the south hill on Appleby line.  (Just joking, I went down that on my bike last summer and have never been more scared in my entire life).

Hey guys,

Looks like we already have a nice group to train with. I d say we wait till the lake warms up till 13-15 C and get some brick sessions going. Last year, I started to swim OW in the middle of may. Hope we get lucky this year too.

Daffodil, Of course the south side... but we could always make it a tour, do all the hills up Rattlesnake, including: Appleby (North & South), Bell School Line, 14th, and Steeles.. & just to make your legs hurt some more we could go over to 6th line and do that one as well.   LOL

Juniperjen, yes, yes I am!!

Of course there is a nicer hill that I didn't know about until 2011... heading west up Limestone Rd. It's not the steep climbs of those other roads, but it is a LOOOONG climb in beautiful surroundings. Tree lined and lovely. This road ends at Guelph Line but it's well worth the ride... the day I did it with my friend, we saw 1 or two cars total during the entire climb at mid-day. Not much reason for any one to use it but the residents of the street.

We'll have to get a BT group out and play on the hills in the area.

I made it about half the way up bell school line and then walked my bike up the rest of the way.  too steep for me!  All kidding aside, I am out for this year.  Bun is happily baking in the oven.  When my doc gave me the green light to bike outside, I'm not sure she was thinking hill repeats on the niagara escarpment
