Anyone have an active advantage membership?  I'm getting ready to enter 3 races and wondering if it is worth it.  Gets terrible reviews online from people "tricked" into it.  Just curious people's experiences.

They have a $1.99 trial for a month, you could do that and see what it's all about.

I don't think I use them enough to pay the membership $60 for a year and it gives you $10 of processing when registering, and the kit deals can likely be found many places.

The glitch is that you noticed it.

It's my experience that any time someone has to try to surreptitiously trick you into signing up, the service is never worthwhile.   If it was really worth it, they wouldn't be trying to craft their pages in a manner that makes it kinda vague as to what you should click next (if you aren't REALLY paying attention).

Not worth it unless you plan to race every weekend.  At which point I'd wonder why you want the discount since you clearly have money to blow anyway.

I loath active all around, so I am not going to give them "extra" money... I spend enough on their fees throughout the year.  I almost wish that we could go back to the days where we mailed in the registration forms... it only cost me the price of a stamp (extra) to sign up for a race. Now I have to give active $15 for the pleasure of signing up for a race.  They provide me absolutely no benefit whatsoever.

I'm a member and I see no one on here is fan of theirs.

But I've signed up to do so many races that those fees added up to be more than the membership.  So last year alone I saved money by being a member.  I don't foresee that happening every year but it's just the way it's worked out for last year and this year.

I'm a member, and have saved well over the cost of the fee for the last two years.  Not to mention that they have a monthly raffle for advantage members that I have won three times.  One Dick's Sporting Goods gift certificate $25, a road ID ~$20, and a restaurant. com gift certificate $50.  I'm not saying I like having to sign up through the site, but if you race enough, it makes sense.

They provide you no benefit that you can see.

For our triathlon we use another service besides active, I think the fee is <$5 for a $60 registration. If I took paper entries and had to do everything our provider does for us, I would have to hire a part time bookkeeper and pass the cost on to participants. Probably much more than $5/participant.

But I've never seen the "advantage" of paying for Active Advantage. Even when I was entering as many as seventeen races a year it didn't really make economic sense to join. IIRC, membership only knocked a buck or two off of each registration fee. Perhaps one of those supporting the service can explain how they saved the $60 over the course of the year?

Agree, but in a lot of cases I find that all the extra "fees" are over the top.  Just like buying an airline ticket.... just tell me what it costs.

Also, out of curiosity, for your races did you do it manually at first?  At what point did you decide that the fee would have to go up or you outsource the registration piece. I only ask because it would seem logical that your statement is correct, but I find that in many cases this just isn't really the case.  It is more a matter of "one less thing to worry about" for RDs/Promoters and is far less about the cost of the "service".

I did a local 5K race for two years and we had over 400 (prob. closer to 450) and we did nothing but mail in and race day registration without any problems.  Now-a-days I still see smallish 5Ks going for $30-40 and Active tacking on their fees.

No we did not try to do it ourselves before because we knew from working with other triathlons what a daunting task it is. Managing a triathlon is significantly different that managing a 5k. I can tell you I spend about 100 hours a year without those administrative tasks and do not have the capacity for additional hours. Just the seamless interface with the USAT is worth the fees IMHO. I submitted two pieces of paper to the USAT last year.

Feel free to run your races however you choose. If you want to volunteer to run my registration process with paper forms, I'll consider it. But I'll bet you don't volunteer to do it more than once.

Guess whose credit card was just charged $59.95 for Active Annual membership?

Mine.  I am on the phone now ... they cant even find my email or name in their system.  Last year I had them refund me the same thing AND the year before that.  I have not used their services in over 4 years.

I can't wait to hear the excuse this time.   I'll let you know.

After you get done, call your credit card company's fraud division and let them have a crack at Active.

Active.com=evil incarnate.  I HATE active but for many races you are forced to use them.

I once got an email from Active Advantage that said they were a Kenyan prince and that if I gave them my account number and pins, they would transfer free funds into my account. They're such a scam.

I did!!!

So I had to talk to TWO different people.  They couldn't find me in the system by name.  So we tried partial email addresses ...FINALLY he finds me under an email I haven't used in years and years.  THEN he finds my account that is under the name I gave him .. WTF?  Immediately he says .. we will refund that right now. He said he could see the refunds from the last two years, and that my "account" had no activity.  So he takes me CC number and refunds the amount.  I asked .. "and now how do we stop this from ever happening again?"  He said .. "I'll cancel your account" .. Um ... that's what they told me they had done the last two times.  He claimed "they" did it wrong and assured me it was fully cancelled and gone.  I got his name.  And I called my credit card company to report the charge and explained everything.

And there it is.  Seems so shady.  They are quite quick to refund with little to no questions (at least in my case) probably because I noticed.  Wonder how many others get that charge slipped on their card?  FYI, It's listed a my statement as *Act-Registration.

Tell me about it... on so many levels.  Unfortunately I was forced to use them last night when I signed up for a race.  Its no wonder how they dupe so many people into signing up for their "Advantage" membership.  By the time you get through the 436 questions all you want to do is be done with the registration process... that's when the big green button that says "register now" looks so inviting... unfortunately you have to click on the small 10 point font hyperlink that says "no thanks" to register for the race w/o signing up.

Teejaay - 2013-01-31 2:46 PMOhh ... be careful with the trial membership!!!  Somehow I must have clicked a button when I signed up for a race that said I wanted the "trial".  I had no intention.  I just needed to sign up for a race thru them.  Then I saw the annual charge on my CC.  I called and explained and they gave me a refund BUT the next year ... BAM ... it showed up again and I hadn't used their website for anything since the initial sign up.  Just my experience. And they did refund that fee as well when I called .. said it was a "glitch" in their records.
The exact same thing happened to me.
