Sneaky Slow ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Such a sad story... Oscar Pistorius, the dual-amputee sprinter, apparently mistook his girlfriend for an intruder in his home last night and shot and killed her. South Africa is a violent place and robberies are fairly common, as such things go, and presumably Mr. Pistorius had this gun for protection. *shakes my head*.... |

BF shoots an unidentified target without even asking who it is. Sorry... I do not get it. I understand if somebody comes over "unexpected". But I have people that live in my house. It is not "unexpected" for another human being to be there besides me. I do not shoot other humans without knowing who it is. I just don't get it. |

If you were to set out to murder someone who lived with you, that might be all you could come up with if you were trying to avoid the whole "I didn't know it was loaded" horsehockey. Then people who were into the passive aggressive "see how bad guns are but I'm going to say it in a way that I can claim I've been misunderstood if someone calls me on it" can use it in threads on forums. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mr. Pstorius may not be the up standing guy that was portrayed this summer. BBC reporting that police had made several visits to the home for domestic disputes. Apparently Mr. Pistorius is about to be arrested for murder. |

Sneaky Slow ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yeah... the word "accidentally" in the title may have been a little premature... Pistorius Charged With Murder in Shooting of Woman http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/15/sports/oscar-pistorius-shooting-south-africa.html?_r=0 ... but then again, there are other stories out there and an interview with him from 2011 where he speaks of sleeping with a gun next to his bed, a machine gun by the window, and a baseball bat behind the door. Whatever the truth is, this whole situation is completely effed up. Edited by tealeaf 2013-02-14 7:36 AM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am a gun owner. A very safe gun owner. But I have to be cognizant of the dangers that having a gun introduces in to my home. I think that statistics will bear out that you are orders of magnitude more likely to have an accidental shooting of yourself or a family member than you are to ever have to use a gun for self defense (I am not going to argue about whether or not this incident was accidental). If you have a gun around to "keep your family safe" you are probably deluding yourself. Your family would be safer without this type of weapon easily accessible in the house. I have made gun safety and education about guns something that I teach my kids. But they are kids and kids do stupid things (adults too). Before you all jump on me about how safe you are with your guns, I suspect just about everyone who has had an accidental shooting happen to them would have said the same thing. My guns are not for self defense. If I could figure out a way to safely have them available as such, I would. As it is, they are locked away. Unless I knew that someone was coming well in advance my guns would be useless to me for home protection. This is what I feel I have to do to keep my family safe from guns in my home. My gut wants the gun in my bedside table. My brain tells me this is not the safest thing to do. Flame suit on. |

Good point Wannabe; however, I keep my firearms locked up also; but unless I'm dealing with a full breach (which is very unlikely with my milquetoast lifestyle), I should have at least 30 seconds to gain access to my weapon - more than enough time. I actually have an incident to back this up. I was with my wife, straightening up in the back room when the front door got kicked in. I fought the urge to go see what was going on, went to the safe, worked the electronic lock, and got the pistol in less that 15 seconds. When I went to investigate, it turns out my wife had forgotten to punch holes in the spaghetti squash and it had blown the microwave door open. It's a good thing I was so cool headed or that squash would have been in real trouble. twomarks |

There will never be an "accidental shooting" in my home because I made the decision not to keep a gun in the house before we had kids. Yes, there are a couple incidents in my childhood that still convince me that having guns in a house with children is not a smart thing...even when the guns are locked up. Sad about Pistoruis. Even sadder that this girl is dead. |

![]() wannabefaster - 2013-02-14 8:38 AM Flame suit on. Why? You've gone through a thought process and come to what is a rational conclusion to you, for you, for your set of circumstances. Congrats. I have zero problem with that at all. Better thought out than quite a few to most with a strong opinion on such topics. I will never have a problem with that. Where I start having issues is when you attempt to make that decision for everyone else via laws. Don't do that and you will never need a flame suit. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() This wasn't an accident in "oops, I was cleaning the gun and it's went off". They are saying it was accident in "Oops, I thought it was an intruder and it turned out to be my girlfriend, obviously didn't mean to shoot her." So, it's not an issue of gun safety rather appropriate use of a gun. That aside, I don't believe it for a second. "But speaking to reporters in Pretoria, another police spokeswoman, Brig. Denise Beukes said those reports had taken her by surprise. She also said that the police had responded previously to complaints of a “domestic nature” at the runner’s home but declined to give further details." I suppose it's POSSIBLE that this particular incident was an accident, but statistically speaking something was going to happen to her if there was domestic abuse occurring on a regular basis. He's in trouble.

The fourth rule of guns that I taught my kids: 4. Never, ever shoot something you can't see. The first three rules: 1. Every gun is loaded. All of the time. Even if you checked it 15 seconds ago, it is still loaded and treat it as such. 2. Never point a gun at something you don't intend to shoot. 3. Never put your finger on the trigger until you are ready to shoot. Following those four simple rules makes guns quite safe. Unfortunately people often have trouble with rules. Sorry. These rules are basic knowledge to gun owners but it makes sense to teach kids these rules even if you aren't a gun owner, "just in case" your kid ever ends up in the vicinity of guns. My fifth rule, for my kids is this: If you are ever somewhere with other kids and someone has a gun, get the heck out of there. Run away! Don't walk! Don't question! Find and adult and tell them that so and so has a gun. I don't care if you alienate a friend. Get as far away as fast as you can! It is like talking to your kids about sex. You may hope that your kids are never exposed to this situation, and it may not be a comfortable talk, but having had the conversation in advance gives them an action plan if "things happen." You have a good point: Part of gun safety is appropriate use of the gun. |
