Subject: Curse Words

Ok. BT Fearless leaders, I understand why we shouldn't curse. It's rude. It's not very intelligent. Occasionally, it can be used offensively. But it would seem that the censoring is getting a touch out of hand. I recently saw on the BT Blogger page the word "*****" censored out. C'mon. They were talking about pricking their finger. Is this necessary?

And why the need to censor PMs? Those, by definition, are not for public viewing, but from one person to another.

I mean ... we're all adults here, right? Or, rather, we are all voluntary users of the internet,  understanding that content posted by other may not be entirely within our liking, right? Does it have to be so... parental feeling?

What, now you can't make references to marital relations with head bones in the forums?

It's a tough call sometimes. Language is malleable. Words can have multiple meanings, some of which are vulgar and some of which are not. Implementing a context sensitive system isn't an option due to the cost.

The latest system, recently implemented, is somewhat automated in that it's programmed to try to catch different variations of the words in the banned list. In this case it asterisked a perfectly innocent word, but on the whole the system's ok. Fine tuning it by excluding some variations of words from being censored seems reasonable.

As to PM's, it is a more private system of communication but anyone can send a message to anyone else. Without the ability to block messages from distinct senders, the potential for abuse is there. Again, we're erring on the side of caution. It's worth discussion though.

Anyone else have any ideas/input? Ron, what's your take?

Truthfully, I never knew the PM's were part of the word filter as it has never been mentioned.  Learn something new everyday.  But like Mike said, it's not a perfect system.  Usually words get added to the filter AFTER innapropriate use in the forums.

Yes, the BT Blogger does filter words as that's a public page.  You should notice that your training logs are unfiltered to you and viewing others.  The reasoning is if someone doesnt like what or how you write, they can easily ignore your training log in the future.  That's not so for the forums, blogger and pm's.

But yes, discuss.

Perhaps the system could flag PMs with words that catch in the filter, in the inbox view.  That way the flag is seen before the message is opened.

That or we could ***** *** ***** ******** ******ing ******ers.

I mean, I see where you are going with this and all... it just seems like a lot of work for you guys to ensure that sensitive ears eyes aren't bothered which, well... welcome to the Internet, y'know?

But that being said, I cannot really argue with your logic. And we have to keep Jim happy, and lord knows without a rule to bend he'd be board as hell, so...

cursing in spanish is good since all i know is mostly the curse words anyway.  those and how to say "hands up" and "get down."  of course the universal language of an officer pointing his gun at the subject usually works in those "tight" situations.
