Subject: 2013 Fishing Thread
There was a thread about fishing a while back and it seemed that there was quite a few folks on here that contributed some cool pics. While the 2013 season is already well underway, this is the thread for bragging rights. Please only post pictures from this year.

I'll start off with my show off son. Two weeks ago I took him to a local lake where he pulled in a nice 17" largemouth. Last weekend he topped that with this 17.5" beast.

I am certain that I had him beaten for a moment this morning. I hooked a largemouth that was huge. I have caught 17" bass on the setup I was using but I have the drag set fairly tight since it it lined with 10lb test. I have never had drag pull out from that reel. The bass on there this morning pulled it with no problem. In fact when I set the hook I said to my buddy, "something's not right" because normally you feel movement. I thought I had somehow become snagged on a log or something because when I pulled there was no give. We caught a glimpse of a very big largemouth but it just wasn't my day to get it in the boat.

For now, my son has the biggest of the year in my house.

No pics yet, but had a great day in the Atlantic yesterday with 3 Amberjack, too many kingfish and a real bad sunburn.

Triathlon training has greatly reduced my kitchen passes for fishing.  I did get in a trip to Lake Texoma a couple weeks ago, though.

It's amazing to me how similar white bass and white perch resemble one another. Here in PA there is a lake in which someone introduced white perch. It is an invasive species so many of us do our duty to cull that herd each year. I am primarily a catch and release guy unless I have a fish that is too injured to return to the water. However, I try to help control the perch and those fillets are delicious when cooked correctly. Last year my son and I made 3 trips to the lake and in about 6 hrs total, we brought home 89 perch (33, 31 and 25). This year we have a better boat and we know what we are doing so the limit on the catch is basically, whatever I feel like cleaning.

I've taken my sons (6 & 13) a few times this year both for trout and bass/panfish. Neither have caught trout (they don't listen to me as to what works) but theyve had blast either catch sunnies or just foolin around in the water. Spending this weekend at in-laws that have a small pond. They fished most of the day yesterday and I suspect more today. Much rather see them doing this then glued to Ipod, TV, etc. When we get back home we'll start fishing the Kinzua Reservoir for walleye and smallies.

Nice Pike! My son and I found a small stream that we fish from our small jon boat. If you can get up there early in the spring, we can get into pickeral while they are getting into the spawn. They are super aggressive and fun to catch.

Hi all, just back from a few days vacation in Cape May, NJ. Fishing was not that great. Took the boys out on a boat Tuesday and caught 7 small sharks and one sea bass. Did a lot of jetty fishing with my oldest and caught all of one croaker. It's just dead out there, but it was nice to spend the time with the boys and go fishing. Anyone having any luck?

We've been trying to get out at least once a week or so...but there's always so much going on. Vacation last month was great, b/c we had the boat out every day, for at least 3 hours a day.

I caught my first muskie last month (on that trip)--first and probably only, as we don't usually fish for muskie. It wasn't huge--about 37"--but big enough. I am honestly surprised it didn't destroy my line and/or snap my pole. :D Like I said, I'm not a muskie fisherman. Er, woman.

I don't have any stills of it--only camera we had on board was DH's ipod...we got a video...but no idea how to get it off of there :D We were on the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage in northern WI (Mercer/Butternut area; about an hour from Cheq, for those who do it...)

No fish pics from that (all on DH's photo stream), but here are a couple of scenic pictures of the evening fish on the 4th of July

Here is a walleye of a great size for a nightcap--17"; perfect snack size :-)...P (the DH) had some good walleye nights, but I've been lagging behind. Hope to pick up next month up north.

This was a nice 20" football, from the same outing

Both these two photos were from Lake Amelia, which is up 94 a bit (outside of Alex, in west-central MN)

Closer to home, we usually go to Lake Elmo (generally sh1tty fishing unless you like mid-sized northerns, but only like 2 minutes away, so easy to get to on a week night after work). We have also been frequenting Big Carnelian and Big Marine as of late, since they are also close by our house. Big Marine has been great for panfish the last couple of weeks--they were hitting almost instantly, and while there were lots of small ones, we did pull out enough fatties to have a great fish fry two weeks ago.

We leave for 8 days in the Boundary Waters in just about two weeks, and I am counting the days. There is absolutely nothing better. :-)

Fishing tale:

About 3 weeks ago my oldest and I were up early on a Sunday. He had to work at 11, and his brother was sounds asleep, so I suggested we grab a couple quick hours of fishing near the house. Now, this is 10 minutes outside of Center City Philly and still within city limits, so I don't expect much. We've fished the Wissahickon before. We've caught perch, rock bass, hybrid bass, and sunnies, but nothing over a pound or so. It gets stocked with trout in April, too.

He wants to fish at the dam, which is right across from a major road and bus depot. I'm dubious but why not? First cast he hooks a four pound smallmouth bass on a plug. Fish just smashes the heck out of it. Reels it in, goes to take the hooks out, next thing we know he's got one buried in his leg. We can't get it out, barb is buried, can't push it through either. Guess who drives to the emergency room? They take an x-ray and find out the bend of the hook had straightened out. Now it's minor surgery to cut it out. Three and a half hours later we leave. Fish 1, son 0. I never even had time to get my line wet!
