New user 150 | Subject: Flu and race coming next week! I have my very first sprint tri coming on Saturday June 15 (yikes!) I've been down with the flu all this week, all over muscle ache, bad headaches and congested nose, sinuses, etc. Week 11 of my training plan (this week) should have been an intense one, speed work on bike and my longest runs / swims to date were scheduled. I was able to do a 1,200 meters in the pool followed by an easy 5k run on Monday, but that's it. I took Tues, Wed, and Thursday off to rest. Today I'm starting to feel better, still congested and sore all over but better than yesterday. Now what to do? I plan on resuming training slowly this weekend and see how it feels. Next week is taper week, and plan called for 1xS 2xB 1xR and shorter and easier. 1) Should I compensate for the lost week by doing Week 11 of my plan and make sure I rest on Friday? 2) Do week 12 but slightly longer and a bit more intense? 3) Stick to the plan and do taper week as is. My goal for this race is not to win obviously, but finish and have fun (which for me being competitive means not to finish last!). Being a complete newbie to tri, not sure how to handle this one. Thanks for your help! |

Not a Coach 11473 Media, PA | Subject: RE: Flu and race coming next week! Rest! Nothing you can do now is going to make much positive difference to your race. But if you slow your body's recovery by trying to make up for lost time, you could make a negative difference. Do some light exercise if/as you feel better. Maybe do a few SHORT race-pace type efforts next week just to help 'shake off the cobwebs' from your brief period of inactivity. HAVE FUN!!!! |

Master 8247 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Flu and race coming next week! I was in the same situation last week! Just rest. If you're still feeling achy and congested, I wouldn't train. Maybe just take a walk to clear your head. Just try to get in a little easy stuff one or two days before--maybe a 15 minute run with some strides and a short swim with a few fast 25's. The training is in the bank anyway, or not. Further training won't do anything but delay your recovery. The week I was sick I took off Monday-Wednesday, did a very light workout Thursday, and did a PB on Saturday, even though I was still a bit congested and it probably would have been a better race if I was healthy. I think the extra recovery cancelled out some of the draginess from being sick. |

Pro 15655 | Subject: RE: Flu and race coming next week! You will be fine if you rest. Do the work of your taper week if/when you feel better and then kick arse on your race.....the work is done. If you have been true to your plan up to now you will rock the race and have a blast. |

New user 150 | Subject: RE: Flu and race coming next week! Thank you all for your help! I will take the rest I need and do taper week as planned. I will see about the OWS I had planned to do (water here is 60*F... not too good for stuffy nose I guess!) I was really consistent in training and accomplished what I had to, so I will trust that. But we always want to do more right?! |
