Subject: Casualty list - pre race
Prepping my bike for a HIM on Saturday and was putting my race tires on. I should mention now that I hate (ok strong dislike) my stock Felt rims. Tires are a PITA to put on over the Felt rims. Here's the damage

-- 3 tubes. 2 pinch flats, 1 manufacturing defect (would not hold air right out of the box)
-- 3 tire irons broken.
-- 1 thumb blistered from trying to get the d*mn tires on/off the rim.

I also semi lost 1 additional tire iron that I might have thrown across the garage. Accidentally.

hmmm.  haven't had a problem with my TTR3's.  

Are you sure it's the rim?  Might be the tires.

I was mostly ranting but yes, pretty sure it's the rim. I can't blame the pinch flats on the rim, but definitely the difficulty in getting it off/on. My front is stock TTR3, the rear is a Mavic pro with my PT laced to it. Since buying the bike I have gone through 2 sets of race tires, Michelin Pro 3s and now Conti GP3ks. On both sets the front has always been nearly impossible to get the tire on/off. The rear, always fairly easy.

From a performance standpoint the TTR3's are ok. Not great, but not a ton to complain about. I just think that mine happen to be on the outer edge of mfg tolerance making it a pain to put tires on.

I think I saw something once where someone said they warmed a tire in the oven for a little bit to make it easier to put on.

 

I don't know that I'd try it, but it is an interesting idea, at least.

I have used liquid soap to get a tire on with good success. For removing, I use a metal tire iron.

Too big to carry with you on the bike, but for setup, etc. it's awesome.
