Subject: Alternatives/ replacements to running?
Hey all. I'm new to TRI and 2 months into my training I've got to take a break from running. So, as the title says, are there any worthwhile alternatives to running?

Besides the daily stretching and strength exercises I don't know what else I can do that will help with my run AND give my knee the rest it needs. There's got to be something I can do for the next 10-12 weeks.

Help! =)

Edit: Let me elaborate, I've got a previously torn PCL, and have knee displacement issues. I started off too fast & too long (2mi shooting for ~8min mile) and didn't build properly. now I've got to take a break let everything mellow out and concentrate on strengthening my legs and stretching everything out.

Nothing is a really good replacement for running but water running is the closest thing.

Great resource. Here's another one that also suggests structure of aquajogging training:

I have several friends that have used aquajogging for rehab purposes. They each told me that the key is keeping intensity up to get some aerobic benefit but the muscular rehab was great.

Aquajogger.com also has a good tutorial on proper form.

http://www.aquajogger.com/blog/?page_id=375

I've done aquajogging while training for marathons when I get injured. I feel I get a good workout with it -- but only if you do it right.

I try to focus on form (it's easy to get sloppy after a half hour). Imagine you're running on land. Or pretend you're marching like in a marching band, more than cycling your legs. Watch this video (best example of good form at :38 in) to get an idea of what that looks like:

I second the above post about intensity. I do intervals not only for fitness but to keep the boredom at bay (warning: aqua jogging can be a bit tedious -- think treadmilling without the numbers/metrics on the display to distract you). Like, 6 minutes "on," 2 minutes easy.

This blog has some good suggested workouts:

A good water-proof ipod situation can help keep you entertained, too, though I don't have one, so I just talk to myself.

Good luck!!

Thanks for the great, informative and HELPFUL responses so far. It looks like I've got some reading and planning to do.

I REALLY hope I don't have to resort to talking to myself... I just don't like that guy.

Walking! If you can walk that is. Good luck!

Just be careful that water running doesn't aggravate the injury. The water gives a lot of resistance, so even though there is no impact, there is still some chance it could hurt. You may just need to rest it. Also remember to add back the running very gradually once you are ready; your muscles and bones will have lost that impact absorbing ability, and you will need to build it back up. So, for example, if you are doing hour-long water runs, don't assume that you can do hour-long runs. You still have to build up essentially from scratch.

In the meantime, keep cycling and swimming if you can.

I have to admit that I have never been able to keep up any sort of running conditioning through water running. It is very hard to keep up the intensity to make it work-- you have to actually work harder than you do on land. And when I'm ready to run again, I still have to build up from the beginning. So when I can't run, I'd actually rather just do other cross-training.

If you get bored in the water --- check out a waterproof mp3 player and a good audiobook!

X2 on Aqua Jogging. Logged over 25 hours Aqua jogging last year while recovering from knee surgery. Get the waterproof ipod it makes time go by a lot faster.
