Start of the new thread.
Stoked to play this year. Only 3 months away.

Can't believe it's only three months away. Feel like it was yesterday I was sitting at my computer counting down the seconds until registration opened up. Feel lucky to get into such a highly coveted race and event. I hear races in years past sell out in minutes.

I'm from southern California and doing all my training in the south Orange County area.

Just did an OLY the weekend before last...time to ramp up the training. Really looking forward to this race (& my wife is looking forward to the wine tastings we've got scheduled for post-race recovery!). Already getting close to triple digit temps here in Phoenix- won't have to worry about any heat acclimation.Anyone does this before? What is the water temp?

Never done it before - from what I am reading, it looks like the water temps are in the high 60s to low 70s. Also, all the pictures and video from previous years shows most people in full wet suits.

Wife did the full last year. Water temp was low 70's. I swam it day before and found it to be a bit warmer than what I prefer for wetsuit legal. I think it will depend a lot on how much weather they get between now and then

10 weeks to go! how is everyone's training coming along?

Training is going ok - my right knee is starting to give me some discomfort on the run. I've skipped some run sessions because of it - ran a charity 10k this past weekend though and it felt fine and I set a PR.

This will be my first 70.3 so I am excited at the chance to accomplish such a cool goal of mine.

I'm coming from southern Cal so my wife and I will be spending the week in northern Cal - sort of making a vacation out of it. Going to spend 5 days in wine country and then 2 days camping in Big Sur. I might have my wife sleep in the car so I can fit my bike in the tent with me. Last thing I need is my bike getting stolen ; )

Yup! It's getting close! I put in a 56 mile bike/2 mile run brick Saturday and an 11 mile LSD run yesterday both days fighting the wind. Legs were toast! I'm glad today is my designated day off to refresh myself.

I'm gonna get some OWS practice almost every weekend starting this month. :D

Can anyone fill me in on the bike course? We got plenty of hills out here...just wondering what I need to focus on.  Lake Placid type long hills?  Louisville shorter steeper types?

I don't know how mapmyride calculates it's Cat ratings, but there seems no way that Canyon Rd is a Cat 3 climb. That segment seems to add a lot of the rollers before you hit Canyon Rd, which is the real climb of that section.

Here's my Strava data from doing the race in 2012. Strava does not have either climb rated as a Cat climb.

Even Chalk Hill was not bad. If you do any Cat 4 climbing at all you will be fine.

ok great to know!!!! any chance you can kind of give me a written preview??  Like what miles are the hills (yeah I can look it up, but if you've ridden it you know!), bad turns, nasty road parts, nice flat parts to get a break?

And I guess I should ask how the water is in the swim and how the run is.

The swim can be very shallow in places. You will see people stand up and walk during the swim. With the water being so shallow, it is also warm. The will be a chance that this will not be a wetsuit legal race, but most years that has not been an issue.

The main thing I took away from the bike portion of the race was how crappy the roads were. You will need to pay attention to make sure you do not get caught in one of the many potholes/ruts that are a big part of the first half of the ride.

As for the climbs, you get a small kicker at around mile 8.5, shortly after you leave the River Road and start heading out to the vineyards. The first of the two big climbs is roughly at mile 26 (Canyon Road). I remember this as more of a sustained climb over just under 2 miles. The descent after the Canyon Road climb is where you will hit your highest speeds (40 MPH coasting). Chalk Hill, which is the climb most people talk about when discussing the ride, is located at roughly mile 44 and is a little over a half mile long. After Chalk Hill it is mostly downhill/flat until the finish.

The run is not too bad since they changed the course in 2012. You have some hills in the first half, but they made the second half pretty flat (use to be an out and back course). There is a section in the middle of the run where you will be running on a dirt road (not the smoothest surface), which seemed to suck the energy out of my legs.

It can be very hot at the race (90+ F), but hopefully we are in for a cool day. In 2012 it was overcast in the morning and warmed up into the high 70s/low 80s by the end of the race.

Hope that helps

Chris

Chris -- that info is very helpful. Thanks for posting!

Amy - when I did Austin (2008), they did a good job of taking orange spray paint out and "highlighting" the potholes so riders could easily avoid. is it too much to hope for the same?

I did it in 2009, and I thought it was great! I've just heard people complain about it. I thought the race was wonderful.

How about a BT get together? I'm never on the West Coast!  I'll be there Thursday till Tuesday, staying in a rented house

That sounds like fun! My wife and I are also renting a little cottage along chalk hill road.

I've read about a small little "hill" at the beginning of the mount line. Some people choose to mount and ride up it and some choose to run/walk the bike up and then mount their bike. I'm leaning towards running it up the hill. Last thing I need to do is flop at the mount line after being unable to clip in on time.

The hill is not too steep or long, the key is to make sure you have your bike in an easy gear when you rack it before the swim. The mount line is more or less at the base of the rise, so there is no time to get any speed built up before the hill.

Just finished my recovery week.  Man that was nice.

Have the Tripple Bypass ride here in 2 weeks(10,000 feet of gain/120 miles)https://www2.triplebypass.org/images/TripleBypass2014CourseMapSaturday.jpg  , and then an Oly 2 weeks after that, and then Vineman 2 weeks later.  Excited to get the season rolling.

Laissez les bons temps rouler!
