Hey, anyone doing White Lake? I'm doing the Olympic and maybe the Dash too. Any idea of water temperature? I can't seem to find a website that reports that info.

Only one I know of is this site- scroll down a little. The info is usually a couple of days behind but with 90s all week, I doubt the water temp will fall.

I saw that one, but seemed way too high to be accurate, so I figured they didn't update it since July! If it is in the 90's, then, ya, no wetsuit will be required! Looking forward to the race!!!

I know, srysly, it still says 91!!! We'll know soon enough. The race info is up, and it says they post tentative water temp on Thursday evening.

Weather forecast shows a hot race day, too!

I'll be there. I've been hoping we would get lucky with the weather like last year but no such luck.

I'm showing partly cloudy and 88° with only a 25% chance of rain. We're going to be wet anyway. Lol

Saw this on Setup's home page:
9/4/14: As of 5pm, the water temperature of White Lake is 88 degrees. NO WETSUITS ALLOWED. USAT will take an official temp on race morning, but we do not expect it to change much.

This other page here still says 91 deg.

Just logging this for future reference! I think I'll be leaving my wetsuit at home!

Official temp race day was 89. Fun race at white lake. I don't hate the heat, and the venue is beautiful!

I wonder what it was during the run? I dramatically underestimated the heat / humidity on the run. I do know that the night before that the hourly forecast called for 99% humidity at 8am.

That run was terrible. The humidity just made it a sufferfest! Maybe I'm just getting soft in my old age.

Nice venue, good time, and it was awesome to meet some of you out there.

It's my third year doing that race and I plan to do it again next year.

did anyone think that transitions were somehow different this year? I looked at the results and the times were easily 30s slower across the board. i'm still scratching my head on that one. maybe the heat?

For what it's worth D00d, I just looked and my T1 was 20 seconds longer than last year and T2 was 8 seconds longer. My bike was racked much farther from the bike in/out though so that might have affected it.

The timing mats were located out at the end of the pier this year for the swim - last year they were located on the grass about halfway to the transition area. This would account for longer T1 times but also for shorter (and more accurate) swim times. I appreciate Setup doing that and I think that Mary has done an outstanding job this year, a step up from last year (IMO).

Ah, ok, that would definitely account for the time differences. The past two years, my T times were pretty close, but this year they were way off and I kept wondering if I didn't realize that I wasn't pushing it as hard.

Looking forward to getting pictures sometime soon.

How did I miss you at this race, d00d? You must have been so fast that you were long gone by the time I was finishing

I don't see photos on Birds Eye View...was there a race photographer on site?

PS: this site still says 91, so I don't think they are updating it. http://www.themarinawhitelake.com/

Sorry to have missed ya!

I was there with my family, front row, during the awards. Maybe you remember all the little kids sitting in the grass asking for one soda of each flavor from the kiddie pools!

Don't think that we got pics this year. SetupEvents removed the photog's info from the WL site, so I guess you'll just have to remember what you looked like on your own!

Anybody have recommendations on where to stay? Trying to decide whether to put this venue on the schedule for next year, Between this and the Outer Banks half the same weekend, and hotels will be a deciding factor (have to keep the wife happy).

there are some hotels ummm well places to stay in White Lake. Be prepared to step back to 1971. Some people think it adds to the White Lake experience others think they are total dumps. Elizabethown is just down the road where there is a Days Inn.
If Hotels/lodging were the deciding factors for me I would go to OBX.

Thanks for info, I remember reading there weren't too many options at White Lake, but wanted to check again in case anyone had luck renting a condo for the weekend or something.

I met a guy who rented a house for the weekend near the race. I have no idea the quality. Having been to both places though I too would say if you're basing the decision on your wife's enjoyment of the location the OBX wins hands down.

I loved staying in the cabins right there on site. It's like going to camp when you were a kid. And you don't have to set an alarm, because the bullhorn starts blaring instructions about 6am

Only thing is you have to book two nights, and it's $100 a night. If you had a group, there are 8 bunks in them, so could be split up.

I think that's what we're going to do this coming year. The kids really LOVE going to White Lake. The lake is just plain awesome.

We did camp at the campground there once and decided to leave. To go along with what qrkid stated, it was quite a strange experience. We were in tents (one of the very, very few) and it felt like a golf cart parade was driving by all day and night.

I'm doing White Lake Int'l, but haven't ruled out the HIM yet...
