Pre-race routine:

Banana and almond butter. 2 Honey Stinger waffles, Tried an espresso chip BonkBreaker bar, but it was disgusting. Bottle of water.
Event warmup:

10 min run with skip and hip-openers. 10 mins bike - spike HR 10 180. Swim - 10 mins of short sprints, mostly to get used to the water.
Swim
  • 25m 45s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 43s / 100 meters
Comments:

Was a little wobbly on the way out to the last turn buoy, which is surprising b/c I thought I was going pretty straight until the final turn and was out to far left on the final approach.

FarmerJohn wetsuit worked perfectly. Was worried about frozen arms, but that was not the case. Quite comfy with it.
Transition 1

Bike
  • 1h 14m 48s
  • 27 miles
  • 21.66 mile/hr
Transition 2
  • 00m 48s
Run
  • 45m 53s
  • 10 kms
  • 04m 35s  min/km
Comments:

Quads and inner knee started to hint at cramping a little before mile 4. Started sucking down HEED at mile 4, 5, 6 waterstops and that seemed to keep things at bay. also increased my run cadence and took smaller steps.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretch, wallk around. Walked back to car and got chocolate milk. Ate a slice of pepperoni pizza, water, and bag of pretzels for the road

Event comments:

There were more DQs than I have ever seen in any race. Not sure if that was the # of collegiate participants, but I am suspicious of some of the times put up by a couple of the participants. It almost seems like there was a lap missing on either the bike course or the run course. May have been innocent mistakes - but if you were easy pacing the bike course and shorted it a lap - it might not be as noticeable.

It would also be nice if this race started an hour earlier. I am assuming the later start helps those travelling in that morning from distant hometowns because Stokesdale is in the middle of nowhere.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

The triathlon made a lot of sense as I could fit the training around early mornings and other times that wouldn't eat too much into my family time. Things never go completely to plan do they?

I found a sprint, the Lake Las Vegas Triathlon, that was happening four months down the road and signed myself up; much to the surprise of friends and family.

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?

Both the Lake Triathlon Shoe CX210TRI and the Lake Road Shoe CX225 offer distinct advantages. I tested both shoes and found them to be extremely comfortable, good looking and durable.

Knowing where the fluids are, how they will fit on your bike, how much to reach for, and when to reach for it should be understood prior to ever setting foot on the course.
