Subject: Full IM 2016 or 2017?
I just completed my first Half Ironman 3 days ago. My finish time was 5:59 and i didnt push it all that much. Had lot of energy left in the tank when i finished. (swim 40min, bike 3h:13 and run 1h:54m) I trained for this race since last summer and averaged about 7-8 hours per week. Im now looking at the next big challange, the full Ironman. I would love some feedback as whether to go for the full next year or plan 2-3 half ironman 2016 and go for the full in 2017.
Some background:
I took up running as late as 2012 and have since completed lots of 5K/10K/Half marathons, 2 marathons and 2 ultra. 2 sprint triathlons, 1 olympic and one Half Ironman. My best 10K; 45min, best half marathon 1:50 and best marathon 4:01. I took up triathlon as late as 2014.
I have a supportive family, allowing economy and a stubborn head

You’re in much better shape than I was when I did my first one.

I think IM is a bit like having kids.  You never think you’re ready but when you go for it you never regret it.

no reason why 2016 wouldn't work.

I'll warn you now that the way you felt after your half is in no way relevant to how you'll likely feel 1/2 way through or at the end of an IM.  A 70.3 is roughly a double Oly and it feels like it.  An IM is not a double HIM (other than by distance)

Feels like about 2.5 -3 Halfs

I agree with everyone above. My 1st 70.3 was January 2014, did another 70.3 June 2014, another 70.3 September 2014, and completed IM Cozumel on November 30th. So, it is very doable. Give yourself 6 months to train for it and make sure you focus on nutrition as well. You also should give some thought as to WHY you want to do a 140.6? Is it just the next progression of distance? Do you have a goal time or just simply finish? Can you handle 3 hour training runs and 4+ hour training rides? So much of the training is mental toughness. There are not too many days you can afford to miss.

Just my .02.

very true. very, very true. It is definitely not a double HIM. that said, you can definitely do an IM in 2016, but you need to put in the bike miles and really figure out your nutrition on those long rides. an HIM, you can get away with sorta have the nutrition down.

Basically take your time, multiply by 2 then add an hour. So in your case it would be about 13 hours.

Important factors to do a full !

IM is expensive in terms of time and money.

Not too bad up to the last 2 months and then it gets a bit out of hand. You are tired all the time, and normal tasks stack up.
Your schedule is chock full, trying to get work done, training done, and general chores (etc) is difficult.

Being mentally tough is the key to get through the training and then of course the race itself.
Rewarding, yes...but at a significant cost.

So if none of that deters you, go for it !

IM is just the next logical progression for me. I train a LOT better and harder if the goal scares the out of me I dont really have a time goal since i lot can happen along the way. I dont train runs for more than 2:30hours and dont generally ride for more than 4 hours during training but my longest run is 7 hours and longest ride just shy of 6 hours.

My brother did his first IM last year at Mont-Tremblant and he had nearly identical HIM, half mary, and mary times as you.  He took up triathlon in 2012.  He went 14 hours at IMMT and he went slow and conservative.

Yes, you can definitely be physically ready for an IM next year.  You just have to mentally want it next year.

I second this, I did my first IM in 2013 having only done sprints up to that point. Bottom Line: If you put in the training you will get to that finish line.

It really depends on what you want out of your IM.

Completing and you are ready to go, competing, and its a bit of a different story depending on how competitive you want to be.

I did an IM a year after my first half and I was fine, was it perfect? no, but I just wanted to complete.

My big piece of advice is to be really honest about the time you can commit and put into training. A full is NOT just double the training and racing on the day, it is far more then that. It really takes a lot out of your physically, mentally, and emotionally. You just need to be very honest about your commitment so you can match your goals with what you can do in training.
