Yo,

What a freaking course.

Swim -
I have no idea where the freaking cable in the water is. Also, I really don't like the first 500m or so of swim races. I spend the entire time considering how I am going to explain to everyone why I quit the race. Then somehow it seems manageable and next thing you know, it's halfway.

T1 -
1/4 mile run to Transition and then changed in the warming tent. Yes, I am a wuss. Had to make last minute decisions here on what to wear for the bike. Good decisions were made.

Bike -
Can I buy a hill Alex? Finished this well, strong headwind for the last half of the bike. And the hills...I think I gave a little bit too much effort on the bike, felt good all the way through it though. This is where I picked up all of my time.

T2 -
Meh

Run -
I am a wuss. Went out comfortably strong and then just shut it down. I am not good at pushing through the pain. I feel like I gave up about 7 minutes, at least, on the run. Oh Well.

Done is Done, first 70.3.

Ya...I know what you mean on the swim about thinking about what you are going to tell people about why you quite the swim.  I really like swimming, but 1200-1500 yds into about every race I get leg cramps.  I Never get the leg cramps in practice.  Not even when I am doing race simulation open water swims.  I always get the leg cramps in races though.  I just keep going and eventually I finish.

Sounds like you did a lot better on the bike that I did my first 70.3.  I also got leg cramps on the bike in my first 70.3 (but in the quads and the cramps were in the calves on the swim).

By the time I got to the run on my first 70.3 I would have had to run about a 30 minute half marathon to meet the goals I had for a race time.  On the run I just ran to finish.  It felt like about 100 deg F and I was dehydrated and my legs were on the verge of going into muscle spasms.  I finished the run 33% over my goal time for the run.

At the end of your first 70.3 it doesn't really matter what your time is, at least it didn't for me, you still feel like you won the race as you cross that finish line.  Great work Steve!

Congrats on finishing your first 70.3! Crossing the finish line is a victory, no matter how you get there.

It’s so funny you mention that about the swim. I remember in my first 70.3 I was barely to the first buoy and my only thought was “my wife is going to kill me for wasting all this time and money because I’m about to DNF.” I guess I was a quarter of the way in before I relaxed and found a groove.

Each race presents its own set of challenges. Sounds like you met them head on and came out on top. Take this event and pull nuggets of wisdom out for the next one.

Congrats on your day!

I've been swimming at any number of races where I'll think to myself, 'you know, I'm just not having fun..'. And then it's done, and the rest of the day winds up being great.

Way to muscle through..

Your 50-mile Ultra doesn't happen to be in two weeks, does it?

I ask because we have been mirroring workouts for months and my A-race was going to be the Redman 70.3 race in 3-1/2 weeks.  I think added a marathon two weeks after the 70.3. I am just curious how closely our plans are lining up.  I chickened out of the 70.3 race.  I waited until about 3 hours before registration closed for the Redman Triathlon series.  By then the race price had done up from something like $225 to $290 dollars.  The processing fee looks like it is a percentage of the transaction price.  It was going to be something close to $19 for the 70.3 race.  The Sprint Triathlon was high too at $89, but the transaction fee was only about $5.  I had a discount code for the race series but it was a flat $20.  If it had been 20% I probably would have done the 70.3 but I was already 2nd guessing if I could be swim-ready in time for the race so the $215 differential in race prices pushed move over the edge and I signed up for the Sprint distance that I had crushed in three consecutive races this year rather than stick with the 70.3.  I am still doing the 70.3 training since that is what I set up to be ready for the Marathon.  I am concerned that I am getting a one-hour sprint race two weeks out instead of a 5-hour endurance race.  I have been training to do the Marathon at my 13.1 run race pace and to used the 70.3 race as my peak run training for the Marathon.  I may have to run an hour after my Sprint to make sure I have a solid endurance training run.  Otherwise, the 18-mile run I did last week will be my peak run for the Marathon.  Not may do their last long run 5 weeks out from a marathon.  I think it might work though.   I definitely could do worse. :-

Steve,

I’d like to see how you transition to the ultra training. I’m thinking of piggy backing a marathon or ultra (would be my first) off my 70.3 training. Looking at the amount of hours I’ve been training each week, it looks like it’d be a simple thing to swap bike sessions for runs. I guess I’m worried about wear and tear. Interested to hear how you approach it.

I did a 50km race a couple years back. This one will be longer, but not near as technical as what I did. Tomorrow will be my first run back and the next two weeks I am traveling in the UK for work. Should be OK to get my runs done.

After that I will take my regular routes (7 miles) and add 3 for good 10 mile base runs and then start doing double longs on the weekends. 15-13, 13-18, peaking with a 20/20 or 18/18 depending on how the body is reacting.

The first 6 hours will suck, the last 5-6 will suck even worse. Then I take my sticker and go home, start training for Eagleman in the early summer.
