My wife and I are going to Mexico next month (our X-mas present) and I always take a book on vacation. I'm tired of my usual spy/action novel i.e. Bourne Identity, Prey, etc. I want a really good, almost brilliant read. Something that will make me think and maybe even change my way of thinking. Nothing's out of bounds and I'm open to any genre. I know it's vague but I'm sure someone will have a great recommendation.

Anything written by J.M. Coetzee - my favorites are Disgrace and Waiting for the Barbarians, though.

Thomas Friedman. "Lexus And The Olive Tree", "From Beirut to Jerusalem", "Longitudes and Attitudes", "The World is Flat".

He's a foreign affairs columnist for the NYT, and has visited the Middle East quite a lot, so his views are interesting, and his writing style is easy to read.

Or you could always read "Zen And The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance". "Atlas Shrugged" and "The Fountainhead".

Hrmm... mostly I read Girly-books, but I don't think Pride and Predjudice is what you're looking for.

Some other ideas:

A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin - I don't normally like "fantasy" but this series has me enthralled.  I'm RE-READING books 1 - 3 before I start book 4.  And I have never re-read any other books.

Life of Pi by Yann Martel - this book will certainly get you thinking.  Is it a book about a real event?  Or is it a book about the journey of the spirit?  Or a mix of both?

That's all I got right now.  Have a great trip!

I will add another vote for Life of Pi. It's a pretty quick read, but I find myself referencing it a lot since I read it a couple years ago.

A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry. There's kind of a follow up to it as well. It's about 5 times the length of Life of Pi, but again, another eye opener to how some other cultures live. In this case, (I believe) it's India. It's been a few years since I read it, but it was up for a Giller award here in Canada (top book). Lost out to a Michael Ondajte (sp?) book.

Enjoy the Christmas present!

Freidman is a good author except he is a bit verbose.  He rights great stuff, just wish he would say it in fewer words.  I second Freakonomics...just for fun.  However, if you really want something to challenge you, I suggest  Confessions of an Economic Hit Man by John Perkins

This is a life story of a man who was the equivalent of the CIA but from an economic side.  It is great commentary on past, current and future international governance.  It really opened up my eyes.

"Johnny got his gun" by Daulton Trumbo. a post WWI anti-war novel. Really good book.
"The World According to Garp" by John Irving, like most of Irvings novels funny, and sad at the same time.
"Catch 22" by Joseph Heller.

All three are pretty easy reads and yet all three have substance.

"Testament" by Nino Ricci -  Wonderful writer, great read.

"The Red Tent" by Anita Diamant - Biblical tale, brilliantly written.

"Angels and Demons" by Dan Brown - A secrot society plots to destroy the Vatican, good read, same formula as "Davinci Code" but a good read nonetheless.

War and Peace by Tolstoy, and i'm totally serious.

It's a long read, but get through the first 100 pages and you're hooked. i read it for fun and it's one of the only books that made me cry. i didn't want to finish it because i would miss the characters so much. And there's a great deal of philosophy woven through the story and in the epilogue.

the book i'm reading now? Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. It's my treat to myself for finishing War and Peace.

I'm really in to non-fiction books.  My boss recently gave me "Adventure Capitalist" by kazillionair Jim Rogers.  Its a great book all about travel.  I highly recommend it because you get a real taste of the countries that he goes to and you dont have to be a big stocks/bonds/money-type person to really enjoy it.  Its really outstanding and I've learned so much about the different countries he goes to.

"The Gates of Rome" by Conn Iggulden is the first of the magnificent Emporer series.  I read them on my holiday this year.  Superb adventure, atmosphere, characters and story lines - action packed with an intriguing sense of dramatic hisory.

"Elephant Song" by Wilbur Smith.  I've read all WS's books and they are mostly all great but this one captured my imagination best.

I'll toss in my vote for this one too.  Very good and will definitely get you thinking.

Freakonomics:a rouge economist explores the hidden side of everything by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner will get you thinking as well.  It's not an economic textbook nor is it even a book about economic theory, but it's a great read.

The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference by Malcolm Gladwell is another of the kinds of books that will make you see things a little differently.

Both of the above a great reads and pretty quick too.  I've started to read some of the classics that I missed in high school.  Currently on my night stand is Fahrenheit 451, something I never read in high school.  Next is To Kill a Mockingbird.  I'm looking forward to both.

Have fun and have a great read!

Fahrenheit 451 is awesome.  I had read it in high school, but then re-read a few years ago (far past the high school years) and was stunned.  Very good.  But it is short.  You might want another book with it.

 Peace.

The Painted Bird, Jerzy N. Kosinsky very morbid.

Into Thin Air, Jon Krakauer (you probably know that - Mt. Everest disaster)

To The Edge, Kirk Johnson about running the Badwater ultra.

have a great vacation!
