Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() As of 3:30am (yeah, I'm up watching), it's the Dems taking the House in a landslide, the Dems are going to take the Senate with 49 and 2 Indys and the dems have 28 of 50 governors. I interpret these results that the American people are sending a clear message to the President and the administration. Specifically most would agree that this is a referendum against the war in Iraq, noted as the biggest issue in exit polls followed closely by "corruption". Guess what people? The Dems now have subpoena power!! Time for some accountability. |

I'm excited because for the first time in 6 years the checks-and-balances so necessary to our chosen form of government has been restored. It's going to be tough, but I believe some good things can come of this congress. |

Democratic Congressmen and women are just as corrupt as Republican ones. They are just as backstabbing, and they are just as concerned at maintaining their own position as the others. |

It's the day after elections, where's your happy face? I told my wife this isn't election day, it's just that we are getting the update on the next round of people to be investigated, indicted and/or trashed for scandalous behavior.

Agreed. And I had my happy face surgically removed. |

Except I might have to pay more taxes. This is one of the most obtuse arguments that Republicans are making. Remind me what the deficit is? Republicans got us into this mess and then they complain that someone might have to raise taxes to pay for their frivilous spending. *GASP* Last time I check, Clinton balanced the budget. There doesn't seem to be a debate about which party is more fiscally sound. |

![]() | ![]() ADollar79 - This is one of the most obtuse arguments that Republicans are making. Remind me what the deficit is? It's interesting. Last night Charlie Rose had a pretty interesting panel that was analyzing the election. Katrina vanden Huevel, the editor of The Nation , said at one point that the democrats need to consider not reducing the deficit, because this would have a negative effect on the economy which would then hurt the democrats in '08. She was the most partisan liberal on the panel, but at another point she was arguing that democrats should push for a strong defense and a foreign policy of containment. At that point the edtior from Newsweek (I don't remember his name), turned to her and said, "So, basically your saying that the democrats should endorse Ronald Reagan's policies. ) She was speechless. It was pretty funny. I gotta find the name of the Newsweek editor, he was pretty sharp. |

There doesn't seem to be a debate about which party is more fiscally sound. Clinton didn't balance the budget. Congress did. Clinton had to submit 5 budgets before Congress would approve it. Fortunately, Congress also managed to prevent such spending programs as increasing Social Security, and complete federal take-over of the healthcare system, all of which would've sent spending through the roof. Oh yeah, that was a GOP-run Congress, too....... Again, all we've done is switch the names and faces. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I agree with you that much frivolous spending has taken place in the past few years (which I am very disappointed by) and I am a red guy. Crediting Clinton with balancing the budget while ignoring the greater economy swings as whole is a little naive. The economy was in an upswing when he hit office, tax revenue was very high, and there was little that he could have done or not done to change any of that. There doesn't seem to be a fiscally responsible party. At least not between the two who hold any significant power. It was pretty funny. I gotta find the name of the Newsweek editor, he was pretty sharp. Personally, I don't think we will see much over the next two years from either party. I do expect the Democrats to push an agenda (unsuccessfully) to reduce the deficit. That way they can run in 08 on trying to balance the budget and sound fiscal policy. But like most things in Washington, gridlock will halt any attempt. Also, I don't see any positive traction on foreign policy either. I think they will put enough pressure on the administration to remove Rumsfeld and then hide behind the notion that we need to give the new Secretary time to come up with a strategy (purely deflecting it). They can ride this until 08 too. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Congratulations on your win, Democrats. It's your chance to make the country better for all its citizens. Do something positive with your opportunity. Be above partisanship, listen to your citizens, especially the ones that oppose your views, unify, take action, lead with integrity and conviction.
Good luck.

I am very interested in seeing where the Dem's take the direction of the country. I am sure a lot of them our celebrating but remember when the hang over is over and you say to yourself "WTF now we need a plan" I hope it is a good one. As for Mac's above comment... I think it is very sad that you now have the majority power in the greatest country in the world, the Dems hold the golden goose. Can change the world, grant amnesty, fight global warming, bring our troops home, find alternative power sources, fund a national healthcare, raise minimum wages, tax the rich to pay for more social services, talk with KJI in N Korea and end the stale mate there, bring peace to the middle east, and repair our countries faith in the government. AND what do you think is important???? A investigation of some energy deals.... That is all you got? I hope the rest of the D's do not waist this great chance to prove all of the Repubs were unfit to be in office... |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Over the past 12 years that Repubs have basically controlled Washington (small blip with the Senate I know but. .) I think the book written about them is very very THIN! I'm not going to say bad, but thin. What really have they accomplished in that time? Anything of great significance? OK, they cut taxes, woohoo! Very small cut and they expanded Gov't size and increased the deficit getting us in more debt, thanks for the $300 return. I'm not bashing Repubs, I just hope Dems don't think it's retalliation time and take out the past decade of frustration now. I hope they rise above partisan lines and truly try to make this a better place. Unfortunately now W is really a lame duck, and I'm afraid nothing will get by either side till '08 ![]() |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The US really needs a third party - voting on Bi-partisan lines is counter productive - here in CO there was no good choice so most voted against the incumbant...to continue to implement policy only to have it reversed should the other party sieze power means no progress is made. |

I hope they are able to accomplish the big changes they campaigned on. My guess is...more of the same. |

AND what do you think is important???? A investigation of some energy deals.... That is all you got? I hope the rest of the D's do not waist this great chance to prove all of the Repubs were unfit to be in office... This was in response to Jim's statement that Nancy Pel. needs to restrain herself. There is an undercurrent among the far left that the Dems will use some of their power to expose some of the corruption that the White House refused to investigate. Corruption was the #1 thing that influenced vote. I've heard some who wanted impeachment hearings. My point was that the Dems can address the concept of accountability in some areas, but not jump off the deep end with drudging up pre-war intelligence or trying to relive the whole "we were deliberately deceived into war" thing. I think that the Dems already showed that many were unfit to be in office when they voted them out. I would suggest that those who call themselves Republican and who support this President and his administration ask themselves why all the issues above (highlighted in red) have not been dealt with and required the American people to put people in place who are willing to fix it. Just a thought....
