Extreme Veteran 492 Austin, TX | Subject: Will 1/2 Ironman Training Hurt or Help Sprints I'm adding much more volume at a slower pace to build for my A race which will be Buffalo Springs 70.3 June 23 and I'm wondering if this will help or hurt the Sprint races I want to do earlier in the season? Even though the 1/2IM is my A race I know my competitive juices won't let me go slow in the Sprints. I usually place in my AG during sprints and want to defend. I'll have at least 2 weeks recovery between my last sprint and A race. Lastly, to keep my speed up, particularly running, can I just continue to have 1 of my weekly runs be a 5-7k run at a higher heart rate? |

Did you plan to do the sprint races before or after the 1/2IM?? If you are doing the sprints after your 1/2IM, then disregard my advice. I went through this cunundrum(sp?) 2 seasons ago. I feel that if you want to do well in sprint tri's, you must train for speed. Doing mostly long, slow distance training will make you just plain slow!! I plan to do a 1/2 in early June, then do some sprints later in the summer. So my plan is to train for the 1/2 IM now, and after that race, I will start adding in speedwork and intervals. The way I look at it, all that distance will give me a great endurance base to start with. Edited by TRIBMAC 2007-01-12 11:55 AM |

Cycling Guru 15134 Fulton, MD | Subject: RE: Will 1/2 Ironman Training Hurt or Help Sprints My opinion is it can only help. You will have a much stronger aerobic base to work from and as long as you do your workouts with a smart approach (staying at or below your LT for most workouts until the last phase of your HIM training) you will see a speed increase accross the board. Other than the "required" speedwork that I did for my marathon training over the Fall I basically hardly ever do any sort of interval work. Just tempo and endurance. And I've dropped my 5k time down to an 18:36. Remember that "speed" is the last thing that you should work on in a training plan because it is the thing that disappears the quickest, and presents the highest opportunity for injury. A lot of people have set different types of PR's at shorter distances just following their IM, HIM and marathon training. That should be an indicator right there. |

Champion 9407 Montague Gold Mines, Nova Scotia | Subject: RE: Will 1/2 Ironman Training Hurt or Help Sprints In my opinion the extra volume required for the HIM can only help your short course racing. Many (most) triathletes would benefit from simply adding volume and training for the HIM is going to force you to train more. The end result is going to be a higher level of fitness which you will then be able to utilize in your short course races. Shane |

Expert 1169 Charlottesville, VA | Subject: RE: Will 1/2 Ironman Training Hurt or Help Sprints I'd say that how much it helps or hurts depends on where you're starting from. If you're like me, a strictly MOP age-grouper, I don't think there is any doubt that the added training (and slimmer body) I'm getting from working towards a 1/2-IM will make me significantly faster in upcoming sprints as well. And FWIW, my 5K PR came several weeks after my Marathon PR, with no specific training for the shorter distance -- the increased miles and marathon tempo runs did the trick. As for someone who's starting at a higher competitive level, there are probably a lot of different issues involved. Good luck in your 1/2 IM! |

Extreme Veteran 707 pnw | Subject: RE: Will 1/2 Ironman Training Hurt or Help Sprints From my experiences it will help and make your sprints faster as well given the extra base. The speed work needs to be there too if you want to take advantage of all the hard work. Keep the weekly run. My A races were long last year. I ended up doing a few Sprint races as tempo workouts and had some of my fastest sprints to date. |

Champion 11641 Fairport, NY | Subject: RE: Will 1/2 Ironman Training Hurt or Help Sprints My best ever placing in a Sprint so far has been 2 weeks after my first HIM, then while tapering for my 2nd HIM I did a 5k and trounced my previous PR. I'd say it can only help. |

Extreme Veteran 492 Austin, TX | Subject: RE: Will 1/2 Ironman Training Hurt or Help Sprints You guys are giving me hope I can train for HIM and still be strong in sprint. My schedule will be: April 15 Sprint May 12 Sprint May 28 Olympic June 23 HIM (A RACE) July 15 Sprint Augsut 5 Sprint September 3 Olympic I'm thinking since there's at least a couple weeks between events I can use the early sprints to work on speed and transitions, be ready for HIM and still be strong for year end sprints and olympic. Man, I can't wait for the first race! It definitely provides a lot of motivation. |

Champion 6993 Chicago, Illinois | Subject: RE: Will 1/2 Ironman Training Hurt or Help Sprints My friend did the badwater which is 135 mile foot race accross the desert and even with all her long distance training and her 44 hour finish from that race she came back and ran the fastest 5k of her life. I was flipping through Triathlon magazine I bought and talked about 1 pro training for an Oly would do 1700 meters in the pool for a warm up and then would do like 400 repeats to spead himself up. Most of us would think about that volume for a IM and not for an Oly so I do think there is alot of value in it. Plus if you have extra weight a HIM will help you better lose that and any extra weight that is gone will help out alot. |

Extreme Veteran 707 pnw | Subject: RE: Will 1/2 Ironman Training Hurt or Help Sprints With what happened with me last year, my guess is your last 3 races will be you fastest paced races of the season. All with little or no pressure to perform. I intentionally scheduled more end of the season, C races this year just to see if it would happen again Those last races really made the work this time of year something I looked forward to. |
