Stumbled across this site looking for training logs. Always wanted to try a triathlon. Turned 40 this year it is time to go for it. I have always been reasonably fit, run quite a bit, lift 3 times a week. But I know I am in for huge eye opening.

I am targetting a Quartermaxx event next June as my first real "event", but there is a little local one in May.

So I bought a bike and want to get comfortable with the disciplines this fall, then get serious in training after the first of the year. I swam competitively when I was young, but that was a lifetime ago. Just doing a few runs/rides/swims per week, but not really timing or measuring results.

My question is, should I train more seriously this fall even though I won't do any events, or do I risk injury and/or burnout if I start too early?

Yeah, don't start too early, but do focus on your weak areas.  Good luck!

depends on if you have a lot of distance to build to your event.  if you follow the general 'no more than 10% increase in distance/duration per week' and take a 'ez week' every 4rth week, u shouldnt burn out.  schedule long and short sessions for each sport every week too.

never too early for a little more structured, conservative base training.

welcome and good luck.

Glad to see another person from KC here!

I'm just starting, too. I won't be doing anything until the Heritage Park tri in May...is that the one you plan on doing? I'm just trying to build strength and endurance this off-season, then I'll get "serious" at the beginning of the year.

Anyway, welcome! It's a great site! C

That's going to be my first as well. Heard it is well run, sounds perfect. Looking at the one ouside St. Louis in June, who knows after that.

Maybe I'll see you on the roads, would be good to have a group to train with.

This site is fantastic - tons of information! Glad I found it.

Hey I just left Leavenworth Kansas in June. I was going to school at the Army Command and General Staff College. If you are looking for a great little Tri to cut your teeth on check out the CGSC Triathlon. It usually occurs in Late April/Early May on a Saturday. It's run on Fort Leavenworth. 200yd pool swim, 14m bike, and a 5k run. Great intro to the sport, good food, good door prizes, and a very reasonable entry fee...~$25-30.

Small world. I will look into that as well. The more practice, the better!

Thanks for making a new guy feel welcome.

It would be nice to have a group around here to train with. If I hear of anything going on in the area, I'll definitely let you know! A friend of mine works for the Parks and Rec department so I'm hoping he'll have the scoop on some open water swim opportunities at Shawnee Mission Park next spring.

Hello and welcome to the site! Good to have you! I don't think it's too early to start training some now, but be sure to take the rest weeks as recommended so that you don't get burned out. I started training my running last fall for a tri in June, but that was because I was totally starting from scratch with running. It's a good thing I did start early since I ran (ha ha I'm so punny!) into some trouble with my knees and IT band, and had time to work through those before starting to seriously train this past spring.

Good luck!

Just a heads up about Quartermax it has some SERIOUS hills on the run. And a few testers on the bike. Be sure to toss in some Hill intervals in your training.

Good luck

Good thought. I ran a 10K where it is held, and damn near died.

What's the best way to train for hills - just add them to normal runs, sprint, all of the above?
