Subject: Help with value of used Cervelo Dual Dura-Ace

I have found someone selling a used 2006 Cervelo Dual Dura-Ace that is not too far away. It supposedly is in great shape and has <500 miles on it. He is asking what is basically the retail price for a new Dual. I am trying to figure out what the realistic value of this bike might be and not having much luck with searching online.

How much is a new bike like a new car as far as depreciating in value the second you "drive it off the lot?" What would be a typical price for this used bike?

Bill

trigods is selling his (with Ultegra) for $1000. Maybe a couple hundred more for a DA bike.

There's also a DA bike on ebay right now, starting at $1000.

I will give you my opinion on this. You should not pay retail for a used bike, no matter how good it is. If he made upgrades thats different, but for a stock bike, you would be better off getting it new, if the prices were similar. You have to figure this.....
The bike needs:
-new tires
-new chain
-tune-up
This alone will cost you $100+ so you dont want to end up spending more than a new one would cost you.

I say it should be about 10%-20% off retail. That would make a $1500 bike about $1200, maybe even a bit lower than that, depending on the actual bike itself. Check E-bay and other bike classifieds and see what the going rate is.

Even if the bike is in brand new condition, you may have fewer warranty rights than the original owner, and you certainly have less right to LBS service, tuneups, and goodwill that would be afforded the guy who actually purchased the bike from them.

Quantifying those attributes is much more difficult. Certainly you wouldn't pay full retail for even a slightly used bike. Perhaps he has some afer-market enhancements he's selling with the bike, pedals, new saddle, cages, computer, etc. in order to command full retail?

Bottom line is that the bike is worth to you only as much as you are willing to spend, and how much more you are willing to pay to get the bike new. How Would you rather pay $1,500 for this used bike or $1,800 for the new one? $1,600? $1,400?

Also thinking that you won't pay sales tax on a used bike, 8% of $1,800 is $144, so now your decision is $1,500 vs $1,944...

The Dual DA is selling brand new for around $1600.  The bike you are looking at is second hand so even if it is in excellent shape it depreciates by at least 33%.  The most I would pay for this bike would be $1000.

Thanks everyone for the good information.

I would never pay full retail or even close. I am just trying to figure out how low I might be able to get and if that would justify taking a chance on something used.
