What kind of vehicle to get?

Elite  3687     |  Subject: What kind of vehicle to get?I finally decided my F250 deisel truck has to go. I bought it a few years back for a landscaping business I own and I really no longer need the truck. Just can't justify all those diesel fumes going into the air and my wife has always hated the truck. My dilema is I have NO CLUE what to get. I am also a pretty avid outdoorsman who hunts and fishes. I need a vehicle that can tow a boat, has either 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive, I can fit my bike inside, is big enough inside to haul a lot of hunting stuff, and preferably gets decent miles per gallon. Oh yea, NO minivans! I was looking at the Honda Elements for awhile and even though they look pretty minivanish I was starting to think I could survive in one. But, I read the reviews and they seemed horrid. Anybody have any good ideas for me? |

It's terrible, though I have the hemi. Perhaps the other engine options are better on gas. Those toyotas look kinda cool. I'm curious what their engine options and towing capacity is? I've got a pretty big boat I need to haul around. |

| Hawai'i | Subject: RE: What kind of vehicle to get? The element is functional but I doubt it has the power to tow anything. Clearance is also suspect, we bottomed out a lot. We traded it for an FJ. We really like the FJ. I have read that it does not handle towing all that great and if you are going from a big strong american truck I can't imagine the 6 cylindar toyota will please you. It has plenty of get up and go. The FJ can go anywhere. I have taken it through water, mud and over lava with no problems at all. If you are really interested in getting an FJ look at fjcruiserforums.com. There is a lot of fluff on that site but it also has answered every question that has ever come out. Gas mileage is around 18-20 for the automatic. The manual is a little less as it is all time 4 wheel drive. Interior Cargo room is okay, not huge but not small either. The seats fold down which helps. Front head and shoulder room is great. Rear head and shoulder room is not. It is fun to drive. It is not fun to ride in the back seat. Like the element it is plasticy on the inside Here is mine with a Gobi Rack. They are expensive but way beefier than the toyota one. I would really like to get a deisel touring wagon. Deisels are a lot cleaner and perform better than those made in the past. It's a bit minivanish/SUVish.. But so far the best option I have come up with is the Mercedes R320

I also hold onto my cars for 10 + years (unless I swap one old car for another). I just do it with cars that are significantly less expensive. But we are all limited by our means, and mine are probably just a little more modest than yours!  |

It takes more petroleum products to manufacture a new car than you could ever hope to save by switching to a more fuel efficient model- hybrids included. I said in that other thread that they are not for mamsy pansies who want heated seats and fluffy steering wheels. Basically they are not for someone who is looking for creature comforts and the back seats is only suitable for kids. The ride is great and way better than I expected. It is definitely a vehicle to spend a lot of time researching and test driving as they are not for everyone. |

Now, if fuel savings is what is driving you, carry on Excellent point. I believe it takes 5 barrels of oil, on average, to build a new car. Buying used is so much cheaper too! |
