Subject: How can I get rid of Poison Ivy?

I can't believe it.  I've got it again.

I've become more susceptible to Poison Ivy as I've gotten older, so I'm very careful about getting close to it.  I haven't been in close proximity to it that I know of, but ended up with a nasty little rash on my arm.  I have tried all kinds of things in the past, but I'm wondering if anyone has a new idea.

A topical steriodal cream (typically Rx only unless you're Barry Bonds) or an oral/injectable version (perednisone).  If you want over the counter, a lotion with cortisone will prolly be your best bet.

I'm highly alergic, as soon as I get it, I head to the doctor for a shot.

I have had fairly good luck with topical Benadryl (the gel)

If you need to relieve the itching in conjunction with a medicine you end up taking, try the Aveeno Oatmeal baths...that should help as well.  Works great with chicken pocs too.

Scratch it until it bleeds, let it scab up and it'll go away. No ointment needed.

It's awesome for scars too!

There is a product called "Tecnu" which will neutralize the oils. It works if you put it on within about 30 minutes after contact.

Even if you don't get it on within 30 min. this stuff is great. Wash your cloths and bedding with it. It really works great!

HOT showers (not ideal for summer). Start with the water as warm as you can stand it and increase the temp until almost scalding. Soap through the entire process. Pat dry to towel off. Wash that towel and washcloth quickly and don't put it in the hamper with other clothes.

It relieves the itching well enough so you can sleep thorough most of the night w/o waking up; about 6 hours relief.

Also, strongly chlorinated pool water seems to help clear it up. Hmm.............

I guess there's a new strain of PI with 5 leaves, more uruishol and almost impossible to kill starting to spread in the Mid-Atlantic states. Great........

Seriously wipe the infected area with bleach. It will dry up fast and will keep it from itching...
Also the 5 leaf kind you are talking about is poison sumac..

Thanks for all of the suggestions.  I think I've tried almost all of them at some time.  One I didn't see was: take a hair dryer and blow hot air on the affected area until a first degree burn results.

I bought some $25 PI wash at the drug store and it is helping.

Thanks again.
