Subject: stair climbing
hi all:
in an effort to get more into shape i have decided to stop using elevators and climbing stairs. i live on a 10th floor. my question is: am i actually going to benefit from doing that or is the marginal benefit so small that i am just being ridiculous?
thanx

I don't think any effort goes unoticed. Why don't you vary how you climb stairs. In track we used to have workouts that purposely included stairs. One of the things was holding the breath for a certain amount of stairs. Another one, was going up two-by-two. Another one was lifting the body up with the leg that was on top [while going two-by-two].

See, so if you keep mixing things up, I don't think it's a bad idea at all. REgardless if you don't try the above suggestions= i think it's a good idea.

Keep us posted! :0) Milly

Great resistance exercise! Like running hills, builds good strength, very good for the glutes.

Take the stairs! Park far from the door... Lift those grocery bags! Every little bit of motion helps. EVERY BIT. Your body is a calorie furnace!!! BURN BABY BURN! Gotta move to burn those calories... and reap cardio-vascular/fitness benefits!!!

Go for it!!! I take the stairs every day too! (Only 4 flights, though... twice up and twice down a day)

I'd try the stairs - why not time yourself the 1st time, continually do it, then after 2-3 wks, time yourself again? Set up goals and keep trying to improve on them.

Climbing stairs made me think of something funny. How it's related, I don't know..anyways, I am always amused at the people that wait for the closest parking spot at Bally's- my gym. Isn't the point of the gym to WORK OUT people!? Park in the back and walk for crying out loud.

That is quite funny. Unfortunately the same happens at my gym. I tend to park far away wherever I am anyway, unless it's dark and not safe.

As for the stairs, CLIMB THEM!!! I live on the top floor of my complex and if I park in the basement garage then it's 5 flights. Talk about a workout when you have to make multiple trips carrying groceries.

There's a fund-raising event where people climb the 103 floors to the top of the Sears Tower. I haven't done it; I'm not crazy about closed-in spaces like that. But a friend did it, and she said that people trained for this odd event, by.... guess what? Climbing the stairs. Elite climbers do it in 15 minutes, apparently. Personally, I think it would take me all day.

So, what the hcek! Take your new-found skill, come to Chicago next November (This year's climb was last weekend), and climb all the stairs you want

A little quick math, double check me on this...that's nearly 7 flights per minute and a bit more than one flight per 10 seconds. WOW!!!

That show The Biggest Loser is doing some kind of stair climbing event on this week's episode, I think.

Well, don't quote me on the time. That's just what my friend said, and I'm sure she was estimating. Let me see if I can find a link. Hang on....

!!!! This link suggest that some people finish in less than 15 minutes: http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/041109/cgtu023_1.html
Well, I guess I won't be participating at that level anytime soon!

Just a funny aside...stairs are the bane of my existance!!! Even when I was in high school at the peak of my physical fitness level (club soccer, cross-country, and track!), I could barely walk up a flight of stairs without huffing and puffing out of breath. It's weird, but it must have something to do with the unnatural stride they cause you to have (shortening/lengthening your stride to accomodate the shape of the stairs). Still, when I was 2 weeks away from my first tri, and ran a 7:20 pace 5K, my boyfriend totally laughed at me because I couldn't walk up 30 steps without having to take a break.

WEIRD!

But hey, every little bit helps!!!

Hi Fonzie!

This is going by memory [High School was more than 12 years ago for me], but I'll do some site searching to see if I can find you something. If not, I will write back and try to be more specific. :0)
