Thank you to all who are serving or have served.
USAF 1993-1997

It is the VETERAN, not the preacher,
who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the VETERAN, not the reporter,
who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the VETERAN, not the poet,
who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the VETERAN, not the campus organizer,
who has given us freedom to assemble.

It is the VETERAN, not the lawyer,
who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the VETERAN, not the politician,
Who has given us the right to vote.

It is the VETERAN,
who salutes the Flag,

It is the VETERAN,
who serves under the Flag,

It is the VETERAN,
whos coffin is draped by the Flag.

Thank you one and all.

Thanks for reminding everyone dreyfus.....

VETERANS DAY
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In 1918 the world observed a moment's of silence upon the conclusion of World War I on November 11th - Armistice Day.  In 1954 after the Korean War the name was changed to Veterans Day so that all wars would be remembered.  Freedom is not Free.
Happy Veterans Day!
Truly a remarkable day for remembrance and at an opportune time (right before the holidays).
My hat goes off and heart goes out to those deployed and away from family this holiday season.
One more thing....
Please take 4 minutes out of your day today and join me in paying tribute to a fallen veteran here.
Thank you, and again, Happy Veterans Day to all my fellow veterans in BT land and beyond.
Subject: RE: Happy Veterans Day.
I am the flag of the United States of America.
My name is Old Glory.
I fly atop the world's tallest buildings.
I stand watch in America's halls of justice.
I fly majestically over great institutions of learning.
I stand guard with the greatest military power in the world.
Look up and see me!
I stand for peace, honor, truth and justice.
I stand for freedom.
I am confident.
I am arrogant.
I am proud.
When I am flown with my fellow banners, my head is a little higher, my colors a little truer.
I bow to no one.
I am recognized all over the world.
I am worshipped, I am loved, and I am feared!
I have fought in every battle of every war for more than 200 years: Gettysburg, Shilo, Appomattox, San Juan Hill, the trenches of Normandy, Guam, Okinawa, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, in the Persian Gulf, and a score of places long forgotten by all but those who were there with me.
I was there!
I led my soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen.
I followed them and watched over them. They loved me.
I was on a small hill in Iwo Jima.
I was dirty, battle-worn and tired.
But my soldiers cheered me!
And I was proud!
I have been soiled, burned, torn, and trampled on the streets of countries that I have helped set free.
It does not hurt - for I am invincible.
I have been soiled, burned, torn and trampled on the streets of my own country, and when it is by those whom I have served with in battle, it hurts - for I am their own.
But I shall overcome.
For I am strong!
I have slipped the bonds of earth and from my vantagepoint on the moon,
I stand watch over the uncharted new frontiers of space.
I have been a silent witness to all of America's finest hours. But my finest hour comes when I am torn in strips to be used as bandages For healing my wounded comrades on the field of battle; when I fly at half mast to honor my soldiers, my sailors, my airmen, my Marines, and my Coast Guardsmen; and when I lie in the trembling arms of a grieving mother, at the graveside of her fallen son or daughter.
I am proud.
My name is "Old Glory" long may I wave, dear God, long may I wave!
Thanks for all of those recognizing the military today and those veteran's that have fought for our freedoms throughout the years!  Just wanted to share this with you as I also reflect on this day.   This is what it is all about!  I agree with the thoughts above in the other posts!  Please take time out of you day today and say a prayer for those that are overseas fighting for us today...and for those that have given their life for us in the past.
Here is one of my favorite paraphrased quotes from "Chesty" Puller, a Marine Corps Commander in Korea. I think of it when surrounded by my competition in a race.
"Men, the enemy is in front of us and behind us. They are on our right flank, they are on our left flank. We're completely surrounded. They can't get away this time!"
Awesome quote. Chesty puller is a legend across all branches of the military. The marine corps even named an exercise after him!
In the Navy it's called the "press press fling"
Steve. no fair with your link. Seriously.
My mom died two weeks before I heard of this song so I can;t hear it and be rational. Can you share your friends's journey? He seems a true patriot, and if he died defending me, I'll be that much more impressed and thankful.
I'm very sorry to hear about your mother's death. My mother died when I was a senior in high school and it was very sad time in my life.
Thanks so much for asking about Scott.
Scott Helvenston was 38 and was a former Navy SEAL and SEAL instructor. There were so many incredible things about him:
1. He was the youngest person to ever graduage from Navy SEAL school
2. a world champion pentathalon winner
3. a military free fall instructor
4. in the movie G.I. Jane as one of the school instructors
5. Demi Moore's personal trainer for her movie role in GI Jane
6. and a man who found Jesus
Scott was in the Teams for 12 years but never saw combat. After September 11th, 2001 (when he was a civilian) Scott decided that this terrorist act was his cue to help his country. He wanted to go to Iraq, maintain the peace and protect the civilians. He was hired by a government contractor called Blackwater Security Consulting, which provides security and training services worldwide.
Scott was deployed (as a civilian, government contractor) by Blackwater to Fallujah, Iraq. He was part of a security team protecting US adminstrators and a food convoy. His convoy was attacked and the vehicle they were in was hit by a rocket propelled grenade, trapping him and 3 others in the vehicle.
The ambusers then removed them from the vehicle, dragged them through the streets of downtown Fallujah, mutilated and beat them to death then hung two of them over the side of a bridge.
He is survived by his mother, younger brother, grandmother, fiance Kelly Kasun (who he was supposed to marry in Tahiti in June of 2004), his ex-wife and their two children, Kyle and Kelsey.
He is truly a hero and those who knew him (and even those who didn't) will never forget him.
