Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey all: Joanna and I are going to Vegas and the Grand Canyon next weekend for 4 days to celebrate the completion of her treatment and her remission ! ! ! Anyway, does anyone have "must sees" at either of these places. I've been to the Canyon before and we'll do a short day hike to see the view, but what about Vegas? Any good night clubs, etc....it's VEGAS BABY ! ! We're staying at Treasure Island at the Mirage. Any info would be great. Thx guys! |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If you like amusement type rides, go to the top of the Stratosphere and ride the Big Shot. That is one scary, but fun ride. It's like a backwards free fall - you get shot up in the air - and you are already 1000 feet above the ground on the roof of the building. Win some money so your trip gets paid in full! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm jealous! My wife and I did a rim to rim hike across the Grand Canyon, went to San Francisco and then to Vegas over the summer. Unfortunately, by the time we got to Vegas we were so trashed from the Canyon and the hills in SF that we couldn't do much other than sit by the pool. We are not into the club scene so I can't help you there, but if you are looking for some shows to see, I would recommend "O". It's kind of pricey and is probably already sold out, but it is very good. Have heard a lot of good things about Blue Man Group also. You may want to spend one evening just doing the Vegas thing, walk up the strip, see the pirate show at TI, the water show at Bellagio, the hooker peddlers, walk through a few of the big casinos and imagine how much tri stuff you could buy with all the money that is being gambled away, etc. Just don't gamble away all of YOUR tri money! Not sure how much time or how much walking you want to do at the Canyon, but if you want to go below the rim, the Bright Angel Trail is probably your best bet. There are resthouses 1.5 miles and 3 miles below the rim, both of which have good views. Be sure to bring water because I don't think there is water at either of these locations at this time of year. You could do this hike without too much difficulty in half a day, but your wife may not be able to (I'm not sure how badly her fitness has been affected by her illness.) If you want to stay on the rim, Hermit Road has some good views to the west of the visitor center, and Desert View Drive to Grandview Point (the highest point on the South Rim) is supposed to be one of the best places to view the canyon and the Colorado River from the rim. The website www.kaibab.org has some great info (maps, trail descriptions, things to see.) The Park Service website is also good. Oh yeah, bring warm clothes. The weather can be very extreme. Congratulations on your wife completing her treatment and her remission. I say a little prayer for you guys every time I see a post from you (so keep posting!) You're going to have a great time on your trip. Wish I was going! |

molto veloce mama ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() i was just there in april for my brother in law's wedding. they were married at paris, which is a cool place to see. we camped for a few nights at valley of fire state park, which is about half an hour from vegas. very beautiful, but not not compare to the canyon. my brother-in-law's new in-lawns (aka my new sister in law's parents) winter in vegas, so she's there all the time. i'll ask what the must see's are. we were there with our two children, so we didn't get to see much of the night life. word of caution - don't go to the suncoast! i left there with 15 stitches! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You can do just about anything that floats your boat in Vegas. I really liked the Painted Desert. If you like broadway shows there are lots of those there now. the Cirque du Soliel shows are really cool and worht seeing. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well if you are a nerdy engineer type like me, take a trip out to the Hoover Dam. It's about an hour ride from Vegas. My wife and I took the hard hat tour when we were there, although they don't offer that anymore (since 9/11) and even she thought it was fascinating and she's an accountant ![]() Chris |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() First, congrats to your wife! I am glad to hear that she is in remission! Second, VEGAS, baby! I love that city. There are ton of good clubs there, depending on what you want to do. My suggestion is a trip to the Rio...it's a little off the strip, but not too far (I think there's a free shuttle that will take you there). They have a Mardi Gras parade on the ceiling every couple of hours and a bar/club called the Voodoo Lounge that is on the roof. For dance clubs, I've been to the Rum Jungle in the Monte Carlo, Studio 54 at the MGM Grand, and The Beach, which is off the strip. All great places to go dancing. I also agree with going to the top of the Stratosphere to do the Big Shot or the roller coaster. It's a great ride - and a great view of the city. Have a great time!! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() First, Congrats to you and your wife - your wife for going through grueling treatment and surviving and you for supporting her. Treasure Island has a show every two hours or so that's great. It's amazing what they do! Pirates of the Caribbean stuff pretty cool. Try to get off the strip and go "downtown," to see the amazing light show. They have more than 50,000 lights that cover a street that downtown that play a sort of cartoonish show with lights, and music. Get an ice cream cone and stroll and look up at the sky that looks like the Fourth of the July times 50! Also don't forget to see the fountain show in front of the Belagio! Wonderful and beautiful. If you're wife likes shopping you guys can catch a bus from the MGM grand to Hendersen, Nevada where the Outlet malls are. Fantastic shopping inlcuding a Coach outlet store - my favorite. Gladys Knight is playing there so if you like her go see her. I think Celine Dion is still at Ceasar's Palace. Speaking of Ceasar's don't forget to go shopping there! They have a real Coach store to die for and they have about three dance clubs (don't know how young or young at heart you are!) There's Studio 54 if you like to party. Can you tell I've been to Vegas once or twice? |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You guys might be gone by now but please add my congratulations and prayers to the pile We hiked down the S. Kaibab trail to the second rest station with a group of not-in-such-great-shape kids. If you're looking for an easier one I liked it. It was the only one we got to go down though so I have no basis for comparison. Next time I hope to hike Bright Angel. I also got to fulfill my dream of a run along the rim at sunrise....it was one tof the most beautiful sights I've ever seen. |

My son and I hiked down the South Kaibab, camped for 3 days in the bottom of the Canyon, and hiked out via Bright Angel. It was a great trip and highly recommended if you ever plan to go to the GC and do something similar! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks once again for all the info. We really can't wait! We're leaving tomorrow and will get in Vegas about 6:00pm. I'll have to feed my addiction while we're gone so I'm sure I'll be checking in briefly once or twice next week.... |
