Subject: RE: Long Island Gold Coast Triathlonthelunchbox - 2008-01-11 8:12 PM First is the mighty mini man, a super short course in April that I thought would make a good initial foray into the sport. It'll probably be over before I can even think about what I am doing. Second is the Ironclad tri, which just seems like a great event. This is the exact schedule I did last year. The pool at Eisenhower Aquatic Center is incredible, and intimidating at first. I trained in a 50 FOOT pool, so to see 50m Lanes was a bit scary! I'd say seed yourself a little faster than you really are. even though it's not the right way, last year I seeded myself in the 7:30-8:00 group and I swam 8:01, so I was pretty spot on. Problem was that I had to pass about a dozen swimmers, who obviously weren't as fast as they thought they were. I might actually volunteer for this race, since it was my first and I'd like to give back to the sport. As for Ironclad, I'm not really sure why I haven't signed up for this yet, probably just the uncertainty of a new baby. But I loved this race last year. The water was about 54-56 degrees, so a full wetsuit is recommended. Even with it, be sure to swim around a bit before the start so you don't hyperventilate the first half of the swim like I did. The bike had some short climbs and a few fast downhills! The run was the biggest surprise, as it started out on the road and quickly became a trail run, complete with forging creeks and hopping over/under a downed tree. Transitions were right near the timing mats, so expect fast T1 and T2 times, last years winner had like a 17 second T2. The after race spread was awesome too! Check out my Race Reports for other information I may have forgotten. Tim |
