Daremo - 2009-05-24 11:06 PM What is this taper thing that you speak of??

To taper would imply that I actually had a training plan and schedule for this race. Tongue out

yup same here, no training plan... will be relying on wits and will

phew!! Glad I'm not the only one!!

Seems to be a trend!

Thanks guys-I'm feeling a lot better about my lack of swim training (yes Rick, despite my Columbia swim time, I'm not in swim shape right now) and the fact that I don't feel like I have had enough bike time this year.  At least I am in run-shape right now.  I will definitely be getting through this race due to experience rather than specific training. I think my taper will start after the Wednesday before the race...

S - sub-40
B - sub-2:30
R - sub-1:40

Goal - try and beat my 4:55 from 2 years ago.  But that is gonna be a stretch with lack-o-training.  Going to try and ride conservatively so I can actually run better.  (Yeah, right).

My only other HIM experience is Longhorn which is a totally different course.  Hilly bike and run plus 95 degree heat.

Lat year I did a 7:12 at Longhorn, so 7:11 or less would be a win for me.  Really want to go sub 7 and I think I can do that since my bike fitness is better than last year and the flatness of the course suits me.

Plan to stick with a 4-1 run/walk.  And I really mean it this time.  Unlike all the other times where I said I would do it and didn't.  Ended up paying for it in the later miles.  If I stick to the 4-1, I should be able to maintain that for the distance.

As for the swim, try to grab someones feet but mostly just keep a comfortable pace and come out of the water feeling good.

oceanannie - 2009-05-23 7:48 PM Nope, no wetsuit strippers.  Speaking of the swim exit, there is a fire department hose that rinses us off and usually water and maybe Gatorade available.

Is there something I don't know here?  The only time I've seen a shower/rinse after the swim is when it is salt water.  What kind of water are we swimming in?

My goal times are simply the cut-off times, but hopefully a little bit faster

S- :45
B- 3:45
R- 3:30

Since I have conceded that this will be my one and only attempt at an HIM (due to really bad arthritis in my ankle), my plan is to keep going until I finish or they pull me off the course.

For those of you in the later waves, I promise to stay to the right on the bike course when you pass me.

My goal times, which maybe a stretch since I really do not have a set plan, more loose guidelines set by my swim coach:
S-28
B-sub 2:30 (I did 2:30 on my training ride last Friday, so we shall see if I can just repeat that or do better. It all comes down to the wind and weather conditions)
R-1:30 (I think I can do this if I contain my energy and fuel properly. I did 1:03 for the ten miles I did on my brick last Friday, but those extra 3 miles could be killer. I definitely slowed down on the practice run, but I do have some time to beef up my endurance)

Overall I just want to break 4:50, so these goal splits give me some wiggle room.

The water by the way is brackish I believe.

Swim: sub 36

Bike: sub 2:45

Run: sub 1:45

Aiming for anything sub 5:15

I have a real huge goal in mind, but I'll just keep that to me .  Last year, my first year of doing tri's, I totally wung training and nutrition.  This year, just the opposite.  I'm following my plan, taking suggestions, and paying very careful attn to nutrition.  I'm hoping it pays off.

As someone wrote before, it's brackish.  Not as salty as the ocean, but not fresh water either.  So, in theory, the water could make for a fast swim.  But the current can be strong in that river.  And because that river tends to be choppy- there can be whitecaps in that river-it can be like swimming out past the breakers in the ocean.  And if we are really lucky, there can be sea nettles in the river Yell  The swim is the hilliest part of your day, as I have heard several describe this race.

Although the swim is in the Choptank River, it's in the tidal portion of the river, and close to where it meets the Chesapeake Bay, so it's a mix of salt and fresh water.  You will definitely taste the salt in the water, it's typically 25-40% the salt content of ocean water.  As far as the currents go, it is entirely influenced by the tide.  So the river flows upstream for about 6 hours, and then downstream for about 6 hours.  These tidal currents can vary from being very strong to practically non-existent.  As far as waves go, that stretch of the Choptank has a pretty sizeable fetch in several directions, so chances are if there is any wind, the water will be choppy.  If the wind happens to be moving in the same direction as the tide, the waves will be bigger.

For the purposes of our 'smackdown' I would say it comes down to this.... can I get enough of a lead on the swim to compensate for your run which will be much better than mine. Interested in another 6-pack wager (this time I'm not including Dan)???

I wouldn't be so sure that Rick's run time will be much better than yours Fred.  He doesn't have a good record on that run course

Question:

This weekend is turning into a tight squeeze as far as time goes. I'll be arriving sometime around dinnertime on Saturday. The packet pick-up is until 7:00. Does anyone know if there is still a line at that point?

Packet pick-up by 7:00, bike racking by 8:00, bed by 10:00, up at 4:00, 70.3 training day from 6:45-12:00, chow down and socialize a bit and drive my back home to sleep. That was easy!!

There is never really much of a line Bob as people will be filtering in all day.

Are we talking about just the bike portion or the whole thing Fred?  As you are well aware, I'm 0 - 3 in the the three races we've done together with finishes.   But I'm always willing for a wager.  Hell, I'm already picking up something for Dan so ....

And oceanannie? Yell ................... Tongue out

Goal Times for me I did 5:11 at Rhode Island last year from memory which is a hillier course:

S: 32 (May go slower only been back in the pool for 2 months)

B: 2:30 (May go faster depends on how I feel and wind)

R: 1:45 (Just plan to run at 8's want to get back to IM training ASAP)

T's: 5 (I like to take my time this could be 10')

Total: Sub 5hrs. (Really just depends on the heat)

First HIM, so without fully knowing what to expect:

Swim: 40 minutes

Bike: 2 hours, 50 minutes

Run: 2 hours, 20 minutes

So factoring in T1 + T2, I'd like to finish under 6 hours.
