Anyone else racing this weekend?  Have a first OWS Saturday morning and am a little apprehensive to say the least!  Going to try to get to the beach tomorrow to get in the water a bit, has been relatively flat I think so hoping no Nor'eastern comes blowin' in!

I agree with everything said above. Especially the used bike idea. My first road bike I bought (used) 2 years ago - worked great - but this year I was ready to upgrade and I knew now that I was going to continue to bike and do tris for awhile. When I was just getting into all of this I didn't want to part with all that $$$$ and really regret it.

The used bike was a great solution for those 2 years. I rode it a bunch. Any money that I put into it, I was able to take off of it when I sold it (pedals, computer thingie) and I was able to sell it for exactly what I bought it for after riding it for 2 years!!!!

My husband and neighbor went the bikesdirect route last summer and they both love their bikes and have enjoyed putting the miles on them.  I went with the LBS for 2 reasons: I really wanted a women's model and I really wanted to be able to sit on it before I bought it. Because of that I paid more than they did, but I am happy with my decision and I was happy with the process.

X2!

Jonah, is your ride Saturday or Sunday? Looks like Sunday will be the better day out here from a wind perspective.

The ride is on Sunday. Hoping for a tailwind the whole way, although I'll be glad that it's a sunny day at least.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Awaiting race reports...

This weekend was pretty good.  I had a very nice long ride on Saturday and I got in a short open water swim (45 minutes of talking, 10-15 minutes of swimming so very short on the swimming portion).  I had a shorter ride yesterday too and my heart rate did not cooperate -- ran low despite the fact that I felt like I was working in zone too.  Boo!

Rest day today and then I hit the gym again in the morning ;-)

I'm ordering more shorts tonight.  I have some Terry Bella shorts that I like very much and I want a second pair before Tour de Cure next month.  I am probably going to order their tri shorts as well.  Have any of the ladies tried them out?

In other news, DH had a problem with his alternator this weekend.  Well, not his alternator but rather his car's alternator.  The car had to be towed to the shop.  He can work from home so we don't have as much of a transportation situation as we might have had.  The car is getting that that age where it is having more and more problems. We had hoped to keep it another year but we are considering replacing it (fuel pump went a few months ago, I have visions of a whole series of problems).

I hope that everyone else had a nice (and less expensive) weekend!

Sorry about the car. What a pain!

I'll post the RR tonight, but suffice to say, it was a great ride yesterday. Fair winds and blue skies and by far the best I've ever felt on a ride this long. I even got a flat tire and had to beg for a co2 cartridge from another cyclist, but still finished in good time and in a good mood.

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

I will post my race report tonight as well, and all I can say is the OWS conditions will not be any worse than Sat!  The event almost cancelled the swim, the waves were pretty big and the current was strong!  The wife and I got it done and feel pretty good about it.

RR is up!

My overall speed was a little faster than when I did the race a couple of years ago. I think the difference was that I spent about 1/4 of that year's ride in a super-fast paceline and I spent 1/4 of this ride cruising along chatting. Still, I'm pretty psyched that I averaged 18mph for 106 miles. Last year, with the horrible weather, I didn't even break 16mph.

It's comments like this (and the bit about pulling uphill at 19mph!) that make me a) realise I have a long way to go still and b) make me more determined to improve.
Still, sounds like it was a fun day.

If you look at the RR for my first ever tri, Lonestar in 2007, you'll see that I rode a pancake-flat Sprint course at just over 16mph, so just stay in the saddle and you'll get there.

Oh yeah, it's time in the saddle for sure.  I remember when I did my first 10 mile ride.  Double digits.  Woo hoo!  That was several years ago.  Hang in there!

What's everyone doing this weekend?

It's bike season so I'm riding as usual.  I'm doing a 100k on Sunday and riding a bit shorter on Saturday.

I need to get the swimming thing to at least a halfway normal pace.  I'd say that my pace is currently turtle but I don't want to insult turtles!  Really, I can accept that I will never be fast in the water but I don't want to be at the very back of the pack.  At this rate, IM swim training will take like three hours per session by the time I warm up and do the workout.  Yikes!  I've seen a tiny bit of progress and I'm really trying not to be too hard on myself.  I only really started swimming in November 2010 (false start Nov 2009)...

After last weekend's automotive event (alternator), this weekend may have lawn mower drama.  It wouldn't start last night.  I think that it's a spark plug.  I'm trying to stay uninvolved.

Gonna get a 30-40 mile bike ride in tomorrow and a longish(for me) run in on Sunday.

Got my pool opened this week so hopefully the water temp gets up to 70  by the end of the month. Kinda cold but very convenient.

It was a very ugly opening this season, while pulling the cover off noticed some winter swimmers who never quite made it out of the water. 1 Ground hog and various mice/voles....and oh yeah, they'd been there a longggg time. Took me a week and LOTSA chlorine to get it cleaned up.

Probably a long swim and bike ride.  It is hot here in FL so hoping to get the bike in early one of the days!

Ted, how big is your pool?  We have one (in Massachusetts for cripes sake) and it's not the temp so much as the distance.  That's a lot of wall time.

Your right, its alot of wall time. For a backyard pool it's pretty good size at 15yds but still lotsa turns. On the plus side, I only have to share with my two 8 yo's and you can't beat the travel time.Smile

Wow, the pool season is pretty short on the island, must be even shorter up north by you.

Not me, I find it hard enough to balance S/B/R training with family and work.

I do core training but not weights.
