I haven't gotten much done the last couple weeks and have felt terribly guilty - especially after ending last week with multiple goose eggs. So I had decided that no matter what - Sunday was going to be a good day to get some training in - planned on a long run, had a new play list I was dying to hear and was just about out the door .....when my non-runner, pack a day wife decided she would love to walk/run with me...even ride a bike alongside if I preferred. I choose the walk/run together and am so glad I did...we are both self employed and have very little time alone together without interruptions. So I may not have gotten legitimate training in but I got something better.....time with my better half - one on one while jogging/walking on a beautiful sunny morning...mid 60s not a cloud in the sky...sigh...

Guilt gone.....feeling good....and looking for a strong week - scheduled to start my tri training for Xterra First Coast Off-Road race next week. I will just keep moving in a positive direction....loving Bobby's analogy....drip....drip....drip :D

Hope everyone had a great weekend and big plans for the upcoming week!

You can train by yourself any old day - sounds like this was an excellent opportunity to bond and hang out with your wife.  I sort of did the same thing.  I had intended on doing a late afternoon 1:30 ride on the trainer but instead spent the day on the rink teaching my little one to skate.  Very fun afternoon but got home and all the fresh air did me in.  Meh.... I'll try and wake up early tomorrow and get a ride in.  A good weekend was had by me but it didn't include tri-training!!!

That's awesome.  My wife and 8YO daughter go for a family walk once in a while on the weekend mornings.  It's great family time.

Thats cool!  I am planning on having my kids ride their bikes on some of my runs this summer.  Good way to spend some time together, especially when the bigger build weeks are hitting.  Congrats on getting your wife out with you, this might be the first step in a more healthy lifestyle enjoyed by both of you.

Havajava - 2011-01-29 6:42 PM I have read through all the posts I missed and wanted to coment on the clean eating topic. This yr inspired by my mother in law and I class I went to I decided to start buying as much organic as I could. I also did alot of research on behavior diets bc my 41/2 yr old is VERY wild. The first these diets say is go organic remove the chemicals and additives from these kids diets!! So I slowly started with produce and now most of my meat and chicken all my eggs some of my cheeses some grains etc some stuff is not like our fav pita bread but it's flour water and yeast no preservatives. I get alottt of stuff from trader joes which is amazing prices! And the rest I get from a local woman who delivers and she only brings me beautiful stuff. I am so happy knowing that I am giving my fam and my body the best and the cleanest. It's not always about does this organic apple taste better then this reg one? Not nec but it's better for u and ur body. I'm not preaching Im just really happy with my diet choices. I still eat in restaraunts and at friends and have some none organic but I try to have the majority of my diet be free off that stuff

Good post.  My family has tried to go more organic as well.  The only downside is that it can get very expensive for families, most items are almost 2x the cost.  I have seen the major grocery stores around us carrying more organic stuff but Trader Joes is hands down the best for prices on healthy foods.  I think prices will continue to come down as organic becomes more mainstream and competition increases.

In the Spring and Summer my seven-year-old runs with me.  We've been running together since he was five.  Anyways, Santa bough him a motorized scooter for Christmas that does 10mph, and twice we took it out during Christmas break and I couldn't keep up with him!  It was fun though.  But come Spring I'm gonna make him start running again!

January Evaluation

Unfortunately, but as expected we totally lost four or five people, but I think we have a nice core of around 10 people.  I like the mix of goals and different distances.  Overall, after looking at everyone's logs, (and considering it's January!!) everyone is moving in the right direction.  For me personally, I lost right around 3 pounds for January, started eating healthier, and (very luckily) hit all my training goals.  And again, I truly think everyone who has been active in this thread is "moving" in the right direction.  Sweeping changes do not come overnight.  From my experience, it takes many days, weeks and months of focusing and re-focusing and making small changes in the right direction.  And I truly believe everyone is moving in a very positive direction.  So for February - let's keep on keeping on!!!  For us in the cold, snow parts, we got one more month to suck it up!  Then March we should be getting more outdoor training in, which will make training so much easier - and the days we'll be getting longer.  SO LET'S FORWARD MARCH TOWARD OUR GOALS OF CONSISTENTLY EATING HEALTHIER AND CONSISTENTLY STAYING TRAINING!!!

January's totals:
Bike:5h 43m 47s  - 92.57 Mi
Run:5h 57m 31s  - 35.22 Mi
Swim:5h 25m  - 11350 Yd
Strength:5h 55m
Walking:12m

Given that I had bronchitis for a week and had some traveling for work...not too bad overall.  Roughly 23 total hours.

Looking to do about 34-35 in February, though my training plans are a little higher than that.

Started out the month training slowly, not quite by design, and was able to dial it in a bit better the last two weeks. I am pleased with my training thus far. My nutrition/diet has been okay at times, but too many peaks and valleys. I pretty much just maintained my weight during January. The goal for February is to be more discipline both in regards to my training and nutrition plans.

January's totals:
Bike: 17h 25m - 305 Mi
Run: 6h 31m 47s - 37.07 Mi
Swim: 1h 56m 24s - 5050 Yd
Strength: 2h 20m

Havajava - 2011-01-29 4:30 AM Hi I haven't logged on in awhile. My grandfather is sick and I went to be with my family in Atlanta. But I did manage to start my training program! I made it to the pool 3x and got over my shyness and asked some ladies in the locker room who sounded like they knew their stuff for some advice and they gave me alot of great drills and tips! I'm a fairly decent swimmer ( relatively speaking) im not all splashy and wild I have nice form ( I guess) and just need to build up endurance. Have been running two miles on the treadmill and taking 45 min spin classes. Then went to atl on wed and got stuck bc of the storm here in ny. But I will pick up my sched Tom.

Sorry to hear about your grandfather.  Hope he is doing better!
Thanks for checking in!  Keep on progressing!

I work at a casino and at lunch the employees get a free buffet.  It takes so much self control to eat the right things.  I have been very proud of myself this month.  It gets easier each time I make a healthy food decision.

Time to steam roll through Feb!!!

My goal is to get my foot better and maintain this..."lifestyle" of training. Smile

Great January everyone, I agree with Bobby, looks like we're all  moving in the right direction!

My month was a mixed bag, I'm happy with the bike and run but I have to really step up the swim. Went into January without a real plan for a place to swim but think I got it nailed down now. Ahh, but that sounds like an excuse and there are no excuses! So, time to fill that bucket in February.

January's totals:
Bike:11h 04m 32s  - 202.16 Mi
Run:10h 39m 55s  - 70.24 Mi
Swim:45m 56s  - 1804.46 Yd

Through the first 5 weeks of the couch to 5K program, focusing on running right now.  At some point I do need to get back in the pool, though.  Come to think of it, I need to renew my membership so they'll let me back in the pool.

Jeff

Hi Jeff.  Couple of things help me not feel famished all the time.

1.) Don't be afraid to eat a decent breakfast.  You'll burn off the calories throughout the day anyway; plus you need the calories early in the day to fuel for workouts later on.

2.) Drink Water.  ICE COLD tall glasses of water.  When you look at planet earth, it's Blue!  We are the water people   Over half our bodies is water.  Lots of time when we think we're hungy, we're really dehydrated.  To fight cravings drink a tall glass of cold water.  The reason I say cold is because a.) it satisfies more and quenches and b.) your body has to warm the water once it gets into the body which requires energy, which burns calorie.  So, believe it or not, cold water is a negative calorie food - in other words - you burn calories by just drinking cold water.  And from my experience, cold water just melts the fat off me.  Really works.

3.) Try and up your protein a little bit.  Having a protein shake for lunch with a piece of fruit, lean meats at dinner -- when you up your protein it speeds up your metabolism and curbs your appetite.

4.) Like Rene says, start making healthier food decisions One Decision at a Time and it gets easier.  When you resist that carb snack, it gets easier each time to resist.  Plus, once you give in to that sugary carb treat and eat one - your body gets that sugar spike and it screams More! More! More!  By resisting one sugary carb treat, we're often really saying no to the next three or four that tend to follow.

5.) Eat filling good foods.  Bananas, large apples, large oranges (just bought four!), almonds, raisins, bowl of baby carrots -- there are lots of healthy, nutrient-packed foods that will fill us up as a snack, taste great, and will give us energy.

6.) Take your vitamins.  This is probably strictly placebo to be honest but:  I started taking a multi-vitamin, vitamin b complex and vitamin c supplement since I started my Ironman Training Program.  I feel like just taking my vitamins helps curb my appetitie because my body is getting the much needed vitamins and minerals so my cravings to get this stuff from food are diminished.  Again, this may just be placebo ...but hey, placebo works!  Try consistently taking a multi-vitamin (if you don't already) and see.

7.) My friend Mike Hall has a bumper sticker that reads:  WWLD?  This stands for What Would Lance do?  Lance Armstrong is a beast.  Yes he has amazing genetics, but despite great genes the guy has amazing discipline.  When not training this guy gets up to 185 lbs without batting an eyelash.  He's a big guy by nature, however he knows that to race at a world class level he's gotta be whip thin.  One of Lance's cardinal rules when getting down to race weight is: No Eating After 7 o'clock.  When I follow this rule, the pounds just drop off.  Eat dinner and then that's it.  Have dessert once a week, on a weekend, the night before a long bike or run, but the other 6 days Do Not eat after 7!!  The first few nights will be HELL.  But then amazingly your body adjusts, as the human body does so well   Not eating after 7 till the morning is an amazingly simple little rule that will drop pounds off you so fast.  And if it's 8:30 or 9:30 and you're hungry - drink a tall glass of ice cold water

So everyone can feel better about themselves ...

January's totals:
Run:1h 23m 30s  - 6.9 Mi
Tennis:9h 30m
Walking:6h 12m 21s

Feel better about ourselves?  First of all, you would wipe the tennis court with me! Secondly, you ran very consistently.

Just remember, it's all relative.  There's a girl on my Lake Placid Training Board that biked 658 miles!! I was embaressed to post my numbers.  Again, it's all relative.

WHATS MOST IMPORTANT IS THAT *YOU* BUILD ON THESE NUMBERS FOR FEBRUARY.  You can put up Personal Best Numbers for January, but if you don't back it up in February - then what's the point?

Great Job Everyone.  Keep Building and Moving Forward.  February is a very short month.  For February I'm going to give myself and all of you the same assignment:  FOCUS ON DISCIPLINE.  Whatever that means to you, discipline in diet, running, biking, staying positive Moving Toward Our Goals ... just do it.  Again, February has only 3 full weeks!!  It's a great month to dial in Discipline and Consistency and quickly feel great about it come March 1st.  Let's Rock! Spring is riiight around the corner

Copy the numbers, then when you go into the "Post Screen" look at the tool bar up above.  See the scissors, then a little paper icon, then is a yellow clipboard.  Click on the yellow clickboard and a dialog box will pop up that reads: "Allow access"  Click yes.

Yes, discipline, that is the word of the month. Oh yeah, the girl from the LP board that biked 658 miles is a beast. I read her numbers and then I humbly bowed to pay all due respect. They were very impressive. Train on!

To start you all off right in the month of February (of which, I LOOOOOVE the theme.  Discipline is something that I lost a long time ago and have been struggling to regain...)

Bike:1h 00m  - 16.21 Mi
Run:30m  - 2.45 Mi
Strength:45m
Elliptical Training:50m
Snow Shoveling:1h 25m
Walking:2h 30m

As sad and pathetic as those figures are for January, they represent a start.  A very small step on a much larger journey.

With any luck, I'll get an "ice day" off from work so I can sign up for my races tomorrow.  Having my schedule all figured out is always motivating.  Keep those fingers crossed!
