Expert 1246 West Grove, PA | Subject: RE: January Training and Nutrition Challenge My training log finally has a blue marble with a little running man on it!!! My first run since mid September. Hit the treadmill for 40 minutes this morning. It t'warnt pretty, but it's in the books. No looking back now... the training season has begun! Now I just need to get a few races on my calendar. I avoided the temptation of sugar/junk food last night by watching TV up in my bedroom. I didn't much care to join my wife and daughters watching the new Paula Abdul dance show (blech). So I watched Biggest Loser. Does anyone have any races coming up? |

I rarely eat junk food, now I hear its siren song all day! |

It is tough...I made it thru almost all day yesterday till there were homemade chocolate chip cookies sitting on my counter last night. Can not say no. wait ... how'd they get there? My "evil" MIL who happens to be a wonderfully fantastic baker of all things chocolate and has an unbeatable recipe for cranberry biscotti. At least I was thinking about the challenge and decided to eat all 6 cookies at once so there will be no temptation today. now that's the spirit! it's exactly what I would have done! Way to beat that temptation later |

Expert 1083 The Woodlands, TX | Subject: RE: January Training and Nutrition Challenge Emmanem - 2011-01-03 9:42 PM My dad does this too. For years spring meant never going outside and even then he had red puffy eyes, sneezing and congestion and was miserable with allergies for about 2 months. He tried the honey last year for the first time and it worked wonders! He barely had problems with his allergies. Only a couple times did it flare up but that was after spending quite a bit of time outside which he was never able to do previous years. So no... honey for allergies will not count against you! This thread moves faster then I can keep up! I am so happy you posted this (so happy for your dad, that is incredible!). I'm not as bad as your dad, but mine triggers my asthma which severely impacts my training. I hate honey, but after reading this I'm trying my best to sneak in a teaspoon every day. Had it in my tea this morning |

I haven't swum but maybe 20 minutes since my half IM in September. I'll be starting again in February. Right now I'm working on getting back into Running and Riding. Gotta ease back in, right? This challenge has significantly helped me with my newfound chocolate habit, yesterday I thought of that point and drove right past the store and hopped on my bike. I failed Monday, but that's ok, I couldn't lose a point 2 days in a row. I also thought I ate plenty of fruits and veggies, but it seems to be hard to hit the totals. I'm very surprised! |

Had it in my tea this morning no! no! how is this possible? it is the nectar of the gods! well, actually, of flowers, processed by bees, but ... the honey that does me real well in terms of health is natural raw honey ... not the processed stuff in squeeze bottles ... i think it tastes a lot better, too. my favorite is ... shoot ... well it is very thick, almost fudgy, and opaque, a very light yellow-white. usually comes in square plastic jars. |

I'm surprised by how little I ate but it has been pretty easy to eat more. i will admit living in tropical paradise and indonesia particularly, people here just naturally have fruits and veggies as a huge part of their diet. it's a lot easier to get fresh fruit or fresh cut fruit than something processed, every roadside corner has a fruit vendor. |

I might try and sneak a workout in later on tonight depending on how I feel after I get some food in me. It has been fun eating fruits and veggies for a purpose. I know I will miss out on 31 points of the sugar aspect at the end of the month but I am good with it! Kudos to you that win that battle!!! Have a great day everyone! Off for a nap! you poor dear ... rest up and get better ... gentle warm [[melon press]] |

It's not the couple of teaspoons of sugar i use each day that's killing me - it's the bacon, second hamburger, handfuls of chips, etc. I'll give up that point and make it up in more minutes or some extra fruit and vegetables. wplummer - 2011-01-03 12:56 PM hey a quick question-i am a coffee drinker does anyone have a good alternative to splenda or equal. i'd like to think that i can get maybe one point for being sugar free. and sorry i am not giving up my coffee. thanks. Shawn - I LOVE your commitment to sugar and the reasons why! I'm not a sugar adder - but I am a big fan of BEER - my personal challenge was to not drink during the week but I just got Celtics tickets so that plan has gone straight out the window. Tonight I'll forgo the fried greasy salty goodness at the food windows and just drink my dinner Don't worry I've already flooded my system with 64oz of cool clean water so I won't be sneaking a point under that column. I'm in the same boat RedSoxChick -- I don't drink soda and can usually stay away from sugar (until this challenge began, anyway) but like my evening cocktail/wine/beer so I think I'll add alcohol to the soda/sugar/junk food category. |
