Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() TH3_FRB - 2006-04-26 12:20 PM . . . When Colonial HIM got dropped I changed my focus to qualifying for the 70.3 Championship in Nov. and I just now kind of realized that I won't be competing for anything this season. I hope to be back on my feet and doing a few races in the fall but those will be more about just getting out there and finishing. At the risk of sounding trite, even though you are not competing this season, and your few races will only be about getting out there and finishing, please remember that you are getting out there and finishing. Right around the corner from my house is a memorial to a biker who is no longer out there finishing. He was killed by a motorist last Thanksgiving. I would ask you to remember all the prayers and vibes sent your way to help you finish this season and compete the next; in reality, with the inspiration you are providing for all of us, it's more like you are pulling us into better and stronger versions of ourselves than we are carrying you. Heal yourself, Joel. We'll compete for you this time, and still owe you a huge debt in the end. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks. And yeah, I know it could have been worse. It's kind of hard for me to take the perspecive that I'm "lucky" in this situation considering I was completely in the right. Of course I'm happy that things weren't more serious...100%...and if this were my fault I guess I'd be more grateful. I'm just angry that I now have this 6 month speed bump slowing my momentum and progress. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() TH3_FRB - 2006-04-26 1:20 PM No info on the actual investigation but we finally got a local news crew to come over today and do an interview. Should be on the 5pm news locally on WAVY 10. Well its about time. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Slightly dramatic...it's not like my triathlon career is over, and nobody "ran off with my dreams". Okay, maybe my dreams for this season. I just hope I can get back and at least finish a few events at the end of the summer. First order of business is walking again, then I'll see what I can do about the bike/swim/run stuff. http://www.wavy.com/Global/story.asp?S=4823354 http://www.wavytv10.com/video/hitrun.wvx
The piece they ran at 6pm was a bit different. Edited by TH3_FRB 2006-04-26 5:21 PM |

The piece they ran at 6pm was a bit different. Hey I think I recognise that guy in the video... Hopefully this will answer some of your questions with those long overdue answers. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm already focused on the recovery and getting back to racing. I figure I've got a couple more weeks before the paperwork catches up and I see how much of this my insurance covered and what I have to dig out of my own pocket. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You are just so damned cute, Joel! You looked great on tv. You too Katie. Rhonda |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Saw the news clip Joel. You're famous. Now if they can only catch that driver. |
![]() ![]() |
Queen BTich ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Joel, I'm so happy to see they ran the story. If it doesn't help find the driver at least it makes other drivers more aware. One thing though, where is your BT shirt? Come on, BT on the news! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sorry to hear about your accident. The exact same kinda hit & run happened to my uncle last year. Broke his hip, and scared him away from cycling. Good luck in your recovery, and finding the coward who hit you!!

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The local news channel ran a short piece about Joel's accident this am (maybe 30 sec to 1 min long), I think they referred to him as a biathlete ![]() |
![]() ![]() |
![]() | ![]() That's awesome that the story got on the news like that. They really did a nice job. |
![]() ![]() |
Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yeah, I think they did a good job on the news story. It doesn't seem like much exaggeration, if any. I hope it helps in the outcome. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Glad to see that it got some coverage. I hope that they find the driver. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Got a short blurb in the local paper today too: http://home.hamptonroads.com/stories/story.cfm?story=103580&ran=153797 Just got don speaking with a lawyer. Basically we need to wait a while and see howeverything turns out with the investigation and my recovery. I might be able to make a claim through my auto insurance because I have un-insured motorist coverage and that apparently applies to "John Doe" drivers if we never find her. I'm heading off to see the doc in an hour for my follow-up. |

I'm heading off to see the doc in an hour for my follow-up. Excellent thing that you had the uninsured motorist coverage. I had a friend banged up pretty badly on her bike by a junkie who passed out behind the wheel and she was able to recoup a lot through that. Continuing best wishes... bts |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yeah, I never thought much about that coverage but I carried it anyway because it was inexpensive. Aparently we don't even need to find the driver to make a claim and it doesn't count against my policy so my rates shouldn't change as a result of filing a claim. I suggest everyone make sure they have un-insured motorist coverage coverage because you never know when you might need it. Evenif you only use it once in your life it will easily pay for itself several times over. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Forgot to update this thread yesterday after my doctor appointment but some of you have seen my post about how I plan to salvage something out of the season and can pretty much gather that things are on track. The doc really doesn't want me walking for another 7 weeks. If I go too early and disrupt the bone healing process I could be left with problems for the rest of my life. So I've got June 15 set as the day I finally start to walk again. I am allowed to begin swimming next week so that will be my form of exercise for a while along with some upper body work in the weight room a couple times a week. As soon as I can cast away the crutches I'm good to get on my bike again but I should probably ease into the running slowly. At this point I just have to be patient and wait for June 15 but I'm planning to be back out there racing this fall. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() That's the right attitude, be patient. I had an ankle reconstruction five years ago (pins 'n plaes 'n bolts), and had to stay off it for twelve weeks. Yes it sucked. It sucked more than I ever thought it could suck, and I'm sure I didn't go through half of the exercise withdrawal you must have right now. But I've recovered 100%. If it weren't for the scar, I wouldn't even really believe that it happened. And I owe it all to sitting on my butt for twelve weeks. It's a fair trade. Good luck! |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well, it's been 7 weeks to the day since I was in surgery getting a big screw put in my hip. I went back to the doc today and he said my x-rays look "fabulous" and that I'm "completely recovered". So all systems are go! I'm going to ease back into running over the next couple weeks and my bike still needs to get fixed but I've put that on the fast track so I should be riding again early next week. For now I'm just happy to walk. I'm really looking forward to enjoying the weekend without crutches. Thanks so much to everyone for their support over the past 7 weeks. For a bunch of people who have never actually met me in person you all sure are great friends. Now it's time for the hard work to begin. |
