Hey BTers...sad news tonight.. Joel, TH3_FRB was hit by a car tonight while cycling.  He is doing ok however, will be in the hospital for a few days.  He is having surgery on his hip tomorrow.  His hip is broken in two places and looks pretty nasty.  The Dr. says he'll be off his feet for atleast 3 months, not to mention rehab, etc.

The a**hole that hit him left the scene right afterwards...but Joel vaguely remembers someone saying they got her license plate number.  The bike is not looking very good...but thank god this wasn't worse!

Joel had a great time in Boston...but it looks like that may be the only race he does in 2006.  Another bad thing is that we live on the 3rd floor of our building...no elevator..which means he'll be going CRAZY not being able to get out of the home!

I'm not sure what time his surgery is, but I'll be sure to keep you posted.  I know your willpower and thoughts carried him through that marathon...so please, keep it going so that he gets through this surgery with the best outcome.

BTW....It was the lady's fault...not Joel's.  He was going straight at a green light when she was turning left from the other side of the road.  Not to mention it was a hit and run...so hopefully we'll find her! (Although....if I find out who she is..you might want to pray for her!)

Take care and please, keep him in your thoughts.

Katie (TH3_DFL)

Oh my gosh!  How horrible that he was hit by a car!  Sorry to hear he's in the hospital with broken bones, but I'm glad to hear he's doing ok right now.  How scary.

Please let him know his BT friends' thoughts are with him.  Hope he gets better soon!

That Sucks!   He should have been in a week long recovery and basking in his glory....

Prosecute the H&R driver with EXTREME Prejudice.

Hope all the surgery goes smoothly.  Lucky for him, he has a very good athletic background and physiology and should have an easier rehab than most.

Oh no!  Poor Joel!  That's awful!  I would like to hit that hit and run driver!  I hope someone did get the license plate!

But the important thing is that Joel is alive and will recover!

Please pass Joel our best...and if there's an address we can send get well wishes too...that would be nice too...

As a fellow BTer that was hit by a car today, I hope Joel heals well. I was lucky to be hit at a slow speed and turned with the car saving my bike. It is sad that his season will be cut short. I'll cross my fingers so that he can have a quick "T.O." recovery.

Man, that just sucks! He had such a great BM and his year was looking to be killer. I've been a bit of a blog lurker of Joel's cause he sticks so well to the HR training and has had such tremendous results. So happy to hear it was not worse. So glad. But really bumming for him. He was set for a hell of a season. Definitely keep him in our prayers etc.

Please relay my best wishes for a speedy recovery to Joel. I was on the edge of my seat watching his Boston performance online. I guess his challenges for the rest of the year are just different now. I'm still interested in following his progress and I expect him to deliver another stellar performance!

This is just awful. I just received an email from him yesterday! We were all so incredibly proud of him and he told me he knew he had it in him to do even better. I was thinking of him all day yesterday, just in utter amazement of his abilities both physically and mentally. Because he owns those abilities, his rehab should be extremely successful.
Wish him the best for me.

That really sucks.  I hope they find the driver.  Traffic is one thing that haunts me when riding.  I love cycling, but the way some people drive just...well creates pain like this.  Enough.

I wish Joel a speedy recovery and will keep him and his family in my thoughts and prayers.

That's terrible.  Hopefully the surgery and rehab go well and they catch whoever did this.  It is unbelievable that someone could drive away after doing something like this.  Truly sickening.

Dang. I'm just glad Joel's going to be OK. Bikes can be replaced and broken bones heal, but thank God his injuries weren't more severe.

Get better quick!

He'll probably wear his HRM with his crutches to make sure he doesn't lose too much fitness while he's healing.
