Also to Muskrat, what are you saying in these emails that go un-returned?

An interesting read on what to say in your first emails: http://blog.okcupid.com/index.php/online-dating-advice-exactly-what-to-say-in-a-first-message/

OKCupid has done a lot of data mining for what works, what does not work for online dating and has some very amusing blog entries about it.

I don't care about dating.

that must be awkward considering the name of this thread

Awkward would be puking on a date.

But for the record, I am not looking for a date. I'm in it for the mild entertainment value. If it makes you feel better about my presence, I'm not married or in a relationship. Thanks for calling me out, though!

I suppose I should mention I am also not interested in the Triathlon part of the Triathlon Dating Thread. Now I've gone and done it ...

So, umm, in light of all those threads in Tri talk, is it considered a social faux pas to pee on the bike on a first tri date?

Thanks for the share - will read it later off to my spin class now.  However, I don't think I'm saying anything that would turn women off.  Usually something like "hello" then I mention something I read in their profile, then end by saying "looking forward to hearing from you".

I guess some women are afraid to talk to nice, polite guys.  LOL.

I've got to say (sorry Lisa) that online dating is another thing I can't imagine.  I suppose it works, or it doesn't, or whatever....but it's just weird to me.  Then again, I don't do facebook, Twitter, or even text message.

When I see my kids texting like crazy I always want to say....."just wait, in your lifetime you'll see the technology that actually allows you to TALK to someone on that thing."  Laughing

I know for a fact I'd have never met my wife if we had looked at each other's "profile" ( what IS that? )  on some online dating site.....NEVER.

Forget match.com - I need all the womens advice now - How do I ask my new spin class instructor out?  How do I even find out if she is single?  It's been a while since I have been in the game.  I did strike up a conversation tonight - but DAMN - I really want to ask her out before I end up in a friend zone!

Advice please...

There is no gimmick to asking someone out. Just ask. Go for the low-risk meet. Coffee? Lunch?

I always appreciate when someone has the backbone to ask me out. I'm a little dense, so beating around the bush doesn't work for me. I don't find passive men particularly attractive; I appreciate a man who simply asks for what he wants.

Just ask her out.  And her response will tell you everything you need to know.

That's so crazy it just might work!

You see, this is my problem with "dating sites".  Have we really forgot how to talk to each other and just ask?

My wife, who to me is the most beautiful woman I have ever laid eyes on, walked up to me and asked me to dance.  I was out with a bunch of guys from work at the time.  She looked good to all of us.  When she asked, I was stunned.......so I said, "ok, but it's not like you're my dream date or something"....she busted up laughing and the rest was history.

20 years and I still get turned around and lost when I look at her....and we've never had anything in common but that dance.

Muck Fatch.com!!!

Edit:  In addition to our attraction to each other, we also had an almost immediate idea that we'd never try to change each other, or mess with what was important to each of us.  Our relationship has been so easy over the years that I've arrived at the idea that we were always meant to be together......but that's also weird to me ( my man card is not negotiable).  Still.......how do you go through life without family...and we surely are.

Good for you. You're lucky to have found someone so special!  But with all due respect ... being happily married I have to assume you've not been trying to date recently.  The dating world has changed a lot in 20 years.  I know ... I've been thrust back into it.  And when you are older ... it's even harder.  I always prefer to meet someone face to face first and get to know them the old fashioned way .. but that rarely ever happens for me and because there are so many new ways to meet people that you may never have the chance to encounter throughout your daily life ... you gotta kinda go with the times.  Just my thoughts.

I get that.....thanks for the "with all due respect" comment,  but it's not needed.

I respect the idea that finding someone is a search, and searching everywhere is part of it.

Still.....to me....excluding people who you have nothing in common with excludes TOO many people.  I'm telling you, my wife and I have NOTHING in common when it comes to the things that most of us think about....politics, interests, even beliefs....the ONLY thing we have in common is the idea to let the other enjoy their life.

Find THAT in a "profile", and allow it for the other,  and you win.  You can build a life from that, and it's indestructable....you'll do anything for each other to keep it.

I definitely have a backbone - just haven't had a need to ask someone out, and I was floored by how perfectly beautiful she was.  Not to mention I made her laugh a couple times in class, and struck up a conversation afterwords.

Something about asking her out the first night I met her though made me hesitate - very forward you know?

She teaches the Monday morning class, so guess where I will be next Monday morning?  Ha - I'll just ask her to lunch or something easy.  I like this (the old fashioned way) so much better than MuckFatch.com - LOL - I am steeling that one.

That said - I love your story, and admire your marriage.

I read this - very good read.  According to this article, I write very good emails.  I follow most the rules, use LOL, haha, mention common interests.  The only "negative" thing I do is put "hello" is the subject line.  According to the article "how's it going" is the best, so I'll try that.  Curious to see if I get more responses with that in the subject.

I'm lucky to have found someone with whom I can share my interests, especially triathlon and dancing and traveling. I've found that it's not the interest in the same things that keeps you together, it's enjoying the common interests and allowing the other to enjoy the interests that aren't shared.

Though for some reason she doesn't like it when I stay up til 2am cooking. Strange.

A morning class, eh? Then there's always the old, "hey would you have time for a cup of coffee/tea/juice?" approach. Of course, if she has to run off to work, that might backfire on you. But, it gives her an easy out if she does have to go off to work and lets you know if she's interested - because if she does have to run off to work she could say, "can't now, but I'd love to some other time."

Good luck. Let us know how it goes!
