Forecast for here for the next two weeks.  Praying it's correct!

What is that bright orb at the top of your graphic?  I didn't think you got the bright orb in Canuckistan ?

This is why it is news!  Right now, it is absolutely pouring.

Damn...that means it's coming for us next. It's actually really nice this morning here.

And we're looking forward to some rain storms...

Yes, I supposed I should count my blessings.

Good morning Manatees! I have a great story to share about my son.

Over the weekend I bought him a pair of bike shoes.  He's been using my old pedals that have a platform on one side and clips on the other and has been asking for bike shoes. After we got the bike shoes I suggested he go to the nearby elementary school to practice clipping/unclipping in the safety of a parking lot. Well sunday he went out in front of the house and tried it a few times then came back in.  Maybe it's a guy thing, I don't know, but yesterday he decided to go out for a full blown ride with the new shoes, without much practice.  He came home a while later with a bloody knee and several scrapes and explained that he'd started on the pavement where he fell twice (both were the typical slo-mo tip), then he went offroad (he has a hybrid) where he fell a couple more times.  But each time he got back on and kept going! I am so proud of him!

This is me n my son after my first tri...

Awesome stuff!  That would be very cool if you could do a race together someday.

ebshot - 2012-07-03 12:27 PM I went for a 2 mile run today.  It was hot and humid and I totally melted and was slow as slow can be.  But I felt good and so happy I got it done.  Who cares what my pace was, I was out there.

Awesomeness!!!  Yup, there is a lot to be said for getting out there.  Glad it felt good, be sure to rehydrate!

Car packed for my 1st training tri (before the real thing on Sunday).  Its pouring, thundering, and 100% humidity.  Supposed to clear up and then warm up to 104 degrees by the time I make it out to my favorite swimming hole.  Here is to the 1st OWS in 3 years!!  Here is to seeing if my wetsuit still zips (and for those who like it, the zoot decor is right where a tramp stamp would be and is quite a conversation piece that I am never selling!).  Here is to trying out the new tri-suit before race day!  Here is to surviving and not getting struck down by lightning (which could happen because I said H*LL would have to freeze over before I did another tri and it sure is NOT frozen, it is full blown, the-devil-is-my-pace-booty HOT out there!)!

Good on you for dealing with the conditions and getting in a pre-race. It will make you much more comfortable for the "real thing"

Hi all,  got some bike questions 4 weeks out.

1. When should I have my last tune up before my HIM done?

2. I have yet to bike the actual distance of my HIM (point to point, 59mi/94km).  Longest ride to date is 51mi/82km.  How important is it that I have done the distance?  Would my time be better spent doing more short/intense rides?

Thanks!

For your tune up it depends on what you have done.  Just cleaning and tightening everything up I'd probably do it a week before so it's still fresh.  If you are getting new cables/brakes etc you will want to give it more time so you can "stretch them out" and get everything tightened up again before the race (maybe two weeks before).

As for the ride, no clue, my longest ride so far is 38.

1. When should I have my last tune up before my HIM done?

For me, the last zone 2 ride is about two weeks beforehand with a zone 1/zone 2 ride the week before and pretty much easy stuff the week of.  That is not to say that I never get on the bike that last week though.

For example, your race is the 29th.  I'd probably have my last longish zone 2 ride on the 14th or 15th.  I'm more of a cyclist than runner or swimmer so my last long ride would be 3.5 hours of zone 2.  Then on the 21st I'd have a 75-90 minute zone 1/zone 2 ride and a brick on Sunday the 22.   Then everything gets shorter and easier that last week.  That's just me though.

2. I have yet to bike the actual distance of my HIM (point to point, 59mi/94km).  Longest ride to date is 51mi/82km.  How important is it that I have done the distance?  Would my time be better spent doing more short/intense rides?

Not important.  If you are training for a 100 miler, many people top out at 80-85 miles.   59 * .85 is 51 miles.   I don't think that you need to go longer than that unless you want to as a confidence builder.

So when is his 1st tri?

It doesn't matter how many times you fall. It matters how many times you get back up.  Great job!!!

Funny, I keep mentioning the "T" word to him and he keeps saying he's too big (I've told him about Clyde).  But the other day he mentioned doing an Ironman.  The seed is growing...

I don't know whether your encouragement should be applauded or report you for child cruelty.

It's better if you do the race distance many times before the actual race (plus some) but you'll be fine if you pace accordingly.  I had 3 total rides in the 50-56 mile range before my HIM last year the rest were 25-30 miles at a faster than race pace.  I went out a little hard on the bike and felt it during the last 6 miles of the run.

I would take your typical 20-30 mile ride pace and go out one or two mph slower.

The only endurance event I had done before my HIM was a marathon and I hit the wall just before mile 20.  The HIM took me nearly two hours longer than the marathon.  So I didn't know what my body would feel like after 4+ hours of continuous duty.  Had I slowed the bike down some (and did better with nutrition) I would have had better results.

Clean/Lube the chain, make sure derailers are shifting smooth, simple tune up.  Have bike shop do it if that's in the budget.  Mainly make sure everything is in good working order and tires are good, wheels are true etc.

Ha!  I read that as last tune up RIDE.  My bad!  I'd do it about two weeks before the HIM if possible.  I like to make sure that I am happy with the shifting after the adjustment.  As TJ said, it depends on how  big the tune up is though.

Thanks for responses.  I'm not sure what I need re the tune up--I'm having some creaking in the cables when I am shifting, so perhaps need a replacement?  Bike is still new though (bought Nov 11)--could I need new cables already?

I agree with bits of Janyne AND Reece. Of course, it's up to you but I wouldn't stress getting the full distance for the ride. I've done a 200+ miler with no rides over 60 miles. Not that I am recommending this route but if your frequency is consistent, you should be alright.

In terms of the tune-up, what Reece said..

I seem to do ok with pacing on the bike I think.  Honestly, I feel as though I went too easy on all my previous races--which will actually bode well, as the pace that I went is likely just right for the longer distance of the half!
