Can't imagine it not being wetsuit legal. Definitely cool enough IMO. Biked a little bit of course...roads are rough and bumpy, at least on the shoulders. Its going to be a painful ride for me. Oh well. Glad you made it to race!! I seriously need my wetsuit folks (I know, I know I shouldn't be doing this race if I can't swim great but I feel so insecure without it) fingers crossed OK, more "Calming influenece posts from Fred".... (deep thoughts from Jack Handy??) 1. LP has always been wetsuit legal. Last year my wife watched the whole swim and she said there were a number of people who quit anywhere from 100-300 yards into the race and grabbed onto rescue boats etc and DNF'd. That was with wetsuits, so I really doubt the WTC (which is a business trying to sell you folks stuff AND make you happy ) has a vested interest in making it non-wetsuit legal. If it is non-wetsuit legal it will be because it is so hot that a wetsuit would be dangerous for health reasons. I am quite sure about this. Lastly I think Melissa's guess of 2-3% DNS without wetsuits is actually accurate, but truthfully Kate *I* know you can do it regardless. Lastly this board (LP thread) always starts to get antsy about now with worries like this. Stay calm, relax. ENJOY!! But every other year the temperature requirement was 78 (not 76). I'm not a calming influence? Seriously though if you can do the swim with a wetsuit, you can do it without one. Moreover, so long as the temp is below 83 wetsuits are allowed, you're just not eligible for awards so even if its "wetsuit illegal" you're still going to be able to wear a wetsuit. |

Veteran 193 Havertown, PA | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread I am worried about wetsuits not being allowed. Not so much for me, but for all those wetsuit strippers. Those people are great at what they do, but lets be honest, they are pretty much one-trick ponies. I mean have you ever seen a wetsuit stripper hand out a water bottle, or catch someone at a finish line? they are all thumbs! This could be catastrophic!! Ok, a little levity, but seriously, we all do 95% of our swims in training without wetsuits. I'm no great swimmer, but I think we would all be fine as long as you don't let your head psyche you out. If there are no wetsuits I'm just going to make believe I am in Kona. I hear Al Trautwig's voice everywhere I go now anyway...the supermarket, work, getting the mail. I swear he's following me and commentating on everything I do. PS - THIS TAPER MUST END! |

My husband, arrogant_bastard is racing this weekend and I'm volunteering in the women's transition tent from 11am-4pm. Looking forward to seeing you all race! I haven't followed the thread, but wondered if there were any planned BT swims? Another BT friend would like to swim or bike with some of the non-athletes, too. So, let me know if you have a spouse up for some LIGHT training! We head up on Thursday from Binghamton. We'll get there early afternoon, staying at Northwoods. Email me at [email protected], inspire me or PM me if interested.
Sara
Sara we are planning on having a group get together and swim Friday morning. I think some thought 8 was too early. I'd rather not wait till to late in the day being I am coming with the family and this is our vacation also. I propose a 9 am meet time and swim. Anyone up for that. 9 sounds good to me! I'll plan on that too! Looking forward to meeting everyone Ryan |

New user 31 | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread I wouldn't be too surprised if the temp is officially in that 78-84 range. Those who want to wear one can, and those bidding for a Kona slot won't. |

Veteran 265 Boston | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread First, I'd like to thank Fred for being the calming influence in my life right now lol... Seems like everybody else's freakout is contagious. Second, let's get onto a serious topic: IM swag. Personally, I don't plan on buying ANY finisher stuff until after I finish. Its just bad karma. I've taken out a second mortgage on my house and my kids will be washing linens at the hotel to pay for the rest of the gear. On that note, assuming I wait until Monday, does good stuff sell out there or are they well stocked? If stuff sells out, is it available online for purchase? Leaving the house in about an hour for Placid, so I'll see you guys up there! Planning on the 9am swim Friday - meeting across from the tennis courts if I recall the pic correctly right? (unless the "tennis courts" were actually something else on the map ... my mind was mush...) |

(unless the "tennis courts" were actually something else on the map ... my mind was mush...) If you want the "good stuff" you need to get there early. The stuff that goes on-line is usually the "left overs." Usually its better for mens items than womens, (there are more mens items and larger quantities) but if its important I would be there when it opens. |

Regular 156 Annapolis, MD | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread Everyone relax...water temp 71 degrees per the thermometer hanging off of the platform at the swim start. Did one loop in a fullsleeve and it was fine. Nights are pretty chilly so no way it goes over 76 degrees in a few days. |

Athletes who choose to wear a wetsuit in water temperatures exceeding 24.5 degrees C /76.1 degrees F will not be eligible for awards, including World Championship slots. Veteran 283 Va Beach | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread I rode the course this morning, could not sleep, at 5 am there is not a lot of traffic, The patches they did are good, if u stay off shoulder(like u will on race day) the road is not bad at all, no tar on wheels today, still loose gravel, but it's all on side of road and should not be a factor. Be safe if you ride traffic is picking up now that the NORMAL people are awake. |
