mndymond - 2012-12-10 11:47 AM 7 more sleeps till Maui!!! Woooo woooo!!! training has been more consistent so I'm ready for some good training in the land of warm! Trying to convince my bro to do a 5k with me in Lahaina on Jan 5. Been in the OR...successfully done 2 spinal anesthetics so far..good day all around. Trainer ride planned for this evening!

Hook up with Maui Cyclery in Paia for a ride up Haleakala, or the Road to Hana.    www.gocyclingmaui.com

I can also recommend Flyin Hawaiian zipline above the Maui Tropical Plantation.  Excellent operation, last zip is something like 1700 feet long, at one point going 70 mph and 10 feet off the ground.....  wow

Road to Hana would be good. I don't think I'm in good enough shape for Haleakala. I had planned to do it before I got sick so now something flatter might be nice! haha. Thanks for the suggestion Chris!

Wait, the Road to Hana on a bike???  I have memories of that road being a twisted narrow stretch of madness in a car, I can't imagine on a bike!

I thought/think the same thing...  but the guys at the shop say it's an amazing ride, best one on the island.  Start from Paia early so you don't hit all the traffic.  I'd be worried about drivers not paying attention

Interesting, I guess if you can avoid the traffic the scenery would be incredible.

Just went through my Maui notes from last August and my suggestions on restaurants we went to.  Not sure where you are staying but most of this is South Maui/Kihei/Wailea area

Food -
Look up Outrigger Pizza  - it's a cart that goes to different locations every night.  Oh my god the Lilikoi Pork (his take on a Hawaiian) is the most amazing pizza I've had, anywhere, ever

Kihei Cafe - great breakfast spot

Coconuts Cafe- Kihei - fish tacos to die for

Hailemaile General Store - Didn't do it this trip, but went a few years ago

Mama's - a maui classic, we had been to Maui 10+ tiems and never went until this trip.  Expensive.  But very good.

Paia Flatbread Pizza -  More pizza to die for..... But I ate here after the Haleakala ride so I could have eaten a scabby baby and been happy.  My wife liked it too though

Lapperts ice cream - used to be all over, unfortunately have to find them now, we went to Shops at Wailea.  Well worth it if you are near one

Trilogy Lanai trip - Meh, it was OK, fun to be out on a boat, but not great.

Thanks! I'm up in Kaanapali but I'm sure we will make some trips to Kihei and Paia!

I thought their pizza was good.  They let you get half and half, so we ordered 3 pizzas, but 6 different varieties.  Their salad was also pretty good.  Don't forget to check out the gelato store a few shops over.  FREE SAMPLES!!!

I had a good 70 mins on the trainer this morning and then I'm going for a 45 min run at lunch today.

We've had some crazy weather here.  Yesterday we had a good dumping of snow in the morning and early afternoon and by the time I left work it was pouring rain.  The temperature climbed to +12C and got rid of all the snow - leaving a soggy mess everywhere.  Now it will go back below freezing tomorrow - makes it tough to plan for what to wear on runs!

Lunch has been replaced with 2x20 on the bike today!!

We are getting similar crap weather..snowing/sleeting now.  Dropping my daughter off took forever because the roads are a skating rink.  Should be an interesting run tomorrow.

Trainer is smart...I braved the cold for my ride today. First time below 40 here and it was a rough first 20 mins!

I feel like such a slacker!!!!   Dealing with a little tendonitis from the last race, and gonna have a very busy year next year, so basically taking the rest of the year "off," swimming with my regular masters, riding on occasion but really social rides, and not running until, well, not sure.  Working on a little core and strength, hopping on the elliptical for 1/2 hour or so to keep some semblance of cardio, but that's about it.

I agree with Arend Chris.  Actually some rest at the end of the season is great, something we all should probably do more often.

I was trying to figure out what I should shoot for in my 5' test, so I was playing around with the CP calculator.

What I just realized is that the lower your 5' test is, the higher your CP will be.  I guess it assumes that the closer your 5' and 20' power are to each other, the less drop off you'll see from 20' to 60'.  And if you have a large difference between 5' and 20', it will assume a large difference between 20' and 60'.

So if you want to tout a high CP, you just need to sandbag your 5' test.  Not that you will acutally be able to hold that number for 60'...but just found it interesting.  Maybe something to consider if you think your CP is too high and had a poor 5' test.  Maybe give the 5' test another shot and if you test higher, your CP will drop to something more reasonable.

I remember doing the same when I followed Jorge's program last year.  I think the assumption is that both tests are executed to the best of your abilities.

Of course for the purposes of stating your FTP on Slowtwitch, sandbagging the 5' test is the way to go.....  and then add 50 watts

CP is calculated / estimated by "removing" the anaerobic component from your 20' test.  So yeah, if you have a very high capability on the 5' test, your 20' suffers more adjustment.

Best solution is to do the real deal and test for an hour

By "sandbagging" you surely still mean at least 413, right?

I'm saving the real test for an actual 40k next summer.  If all goes well, the test won't be official because it's not long enough.

You are very smart Chris....I struggle with taking time off...but I also don't race very much so there are not many "peaks" in my training and I don't have an A race per se. I think if you have a plan for next season and you know that there will be times when you are putting in the time and intensity, then just sit back and relax and enjoy the down time. Your body will thank you for it!

The time is coming soon where the new set of mentor groups will start, and this thread will get put into the archives.  So I just wanted to start some discusssion on what you guys think we should do for the next group.  Fred's no longer here to dictate that, so I think it should be up to all of us how to handle it and let Ron know.

I'll speak for myself in saying that I hope this group continues on as is.  I think we have a pretty good size already, but I wouldn't mind a couple more members.  We may have to hand pick them though as I believe this is one of the more popular groups and I don't want to be the one to draw the line if there is a floodgate of members posting trying to get in.

Any thoughts?

I just skimmed through the last 6 pages or so and it seems we have about 15-20 active posters.  Not sure if you guys feel that is too big, too small, or just right.

I'm good with that.  I like the size of the group, some are more active then others and I don't think a few more would cause the dynamic to change much.

Hey Fred

if you don't mind an old man of 55 in the group I'd be interested in joining.  2013 will be my third years of tri's. Hoping to do a half iron later this year.  I have done mostly cycling over the past 30 years with 13 races up Mt. Washington. Two years ago some people at our local hospital put on a sprint just to get people motivated and moving.  I had always told my wife I would like to try one but didn't know what to do.  This one was perfect.  None of us knew what we were doing.  I got hooked, did a lot of reading and trying to get it all together for 2013.  I had one age group podium finish in 2012.

Presently I am participating in the bike jouirnal site of consequetive days cycling. A guy in Canada runs it and reviews our logs and updates our status.  Todays ride made 1440 days of straight cycling. 6.2 miles in the least a ride can be.  Started this on Jan 1 2009.  Presently trying to get in shape for the 26.2 Run with Donna on Feb 17, 2013. Lots of work to be done.  Finally made it back into the pool last night and will be taking lessons after the holidays.

I'm married to a very patient wife and we have two grown daughters out on there own.  Besides working full time I'm also on a volunteer fire department. Time is really crunched. I feel I would be a good member because I also like to encourage others to stay motivated.  I'm not a fan of keeping secrets so whatever I pick up outside of BT I'll pass along. I enjoy a good joke or two but not into the bs. So if you have room and want me let me know.  Thanks, Kev
