Hey everyone, long time no speak.  Things just keep getting better and better for me, not only have I been laid out with the flu for 10 days, but my daughter dropped the laptop down the stairs this weekend.  Of course it was on so the hard drive is toast.  Can I have anymore bad luck?   Hope everything is going well for everyone else.  I'll enjoy catching up on all the posts as soon as I have a larger screen to read from.  Smart phones can only do so much.

GrapeJuice - 2011-02-15 3:16 PM Hello guys, I am looking to purchase a trainer on craigslist and wanted to know which one was a better buy. Bellow are the two listings. Thanks!!

http://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/spo/2216465221.html

or

http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/bik/2216112935.html

Looks like the 1st one is fluid and the 2nd one magnetic? I had the first one, bought used on CL, and never had a problem with it. I'm not familiar with magnetic trainer technology.

Happy purchasing!!

good luck racing peeps.

i really want to race (use that word lightly with my bike skills) a time trial here in town this weekend.  but i'm probably going to pass and stick with the longer planned ride.  might volunteer though.

the texas ironman is number 1.  not sure what else to say about that.  i'm really starting to feel the training...  always hungy and pretty tired.  the back half of my short run today was tough.   i think i have flip tuirns down though.   kinda tough at first to get the breathing right, but now i think i have em' down and can go pretty much the entire time... except for hard 2 or 300's.  i don't know what this has to do with the whose racing question though.  hmmmmm.

Did anyone tell you flip turns aren't allowed in IMs?

Kinda early for you to be tired Fatty.  Are you getting enough sleep? eating enough of the good stuff?  weight loss is a balancing act when you are working as hard as you are right now.

Quote of the day, from Bree Wee, one of my favorite pro triathletes:

"... it takes more than boobs to fill a bikini. It takes confidence, belief in yourself, and the ability and appreciation to know and accept who you are and what you got."

I don't know why, but I love that. (And no, peanut gallery, it's not cuz I don't have boobs.)

IM CDA. Plan is to continue to enjoy the journey, all of it. Get there healthy. Smile a lot. Enjoy the day. Be the best triathlete and person I can be while continuing to be the best wife and mother I can be.

Sad that they have changed the run course... used to turn around mid-way up a hill. Now we go all the way up the hill, over the hill, down the other side a ways before we turn around and run up the back side. Twice. The part they cut out was the part where my family was hanging out last year and I got to see them twice in 20 minutes, which was awesome. But it is what it is and so it goes!! Gonna add more hills to my long runs this year, which is not hard to do around here!!

I like that quote, Kyla! Here's another one, maybe two quotes for the day...this one from Desiree Ficker... On hills during the NY marathon..."I like to think of hills as a little bit of suffering with a great reward when you get to come down the other side!". It's all about keeping a positive attitude out there.

Kim, that is so funny (and CUTE)!  Our dog actually used to be a sled dog!  Nadie didn't fit into the team very well because she's a little short and too mellow, so we adopted her a couple years ago from a mushing yard in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  We're actually going to watch her old musher race.  It's the UP 200, so I guess it's a pretty big race in the Midwest, though nowhere NEAR the caliber of the Iditarod.  It'll be my first time at a race, so I'm very excited to see all the dogs!

I would love to see pictures of Alyeska, if you have some.

That sounds so awesome.  There was a race from our village, Kotzebue, to a little village called Kobuk, one of the 9 villages I traveled to do eye exams. It was called the Kobuk 440.  It was amazing to watch the start and it was actually quite the big event.  I brought Aly down to the start line and she was rearing to go.  We ski-joured together (cross country skiing with our dogs on harnesses)  with friends, it was quite the adventure.  We would go a few miles and then stop to eat snacks and feed the pooches.  They just wanted to run and run and pull and pull!  I miss those days, and boy do I miss her.  She lived to be 16 years old and was quite the talkative wolf-dog.    Thank you for bringing up incredible memories.

This picture is when she was 13 or so.  I have some of her as a baby but unfortunately they are on tiff and i cannot upload those.  She was the cutest thing ever.  Enjoy your Nadie!!!!

No racing this weekend.

#1 race is Shamrock Marathon.  My training hasn't quite gone as planned but sometimes things work out for the best.  I'm having fun and that is what matters.  My plan for the race is to run the fastest, smartest race I am capable of and see what happens.

Then I get to shift gears and start being a triathlete again.  I finally decided that I want to try and be a big fish in a small pond.  I'm going to do lots of short, local races and see if I can make any podiums.  Should be fun.  Then maybe in 2012 tackle some of the long courses again.

Not racing.

Haven't decided what my #1 race will be, but so far it seems it will be either Kokopelli or Pumpkinman. It all depends on my training.   I will be slightly overwhelmed in the Spring/Summer due to getting closer to graduation.  I don't know if I'll be looking forward to riding up the dang hills, but it would be nice to get a PR (I should get one...last year I had to stop at someone's house to take a dump...read my RR to see what happened).

Not looking to podium anywhere. I'm a legendary MOP/BOP. :-P  Kokopelli will be really nice race since it will be in Utah and out of Las Vegas. So...we'll see. (and yes I know all about the story of Kokopelli and all that, thanks to mythology class...no dirty jokes...*looking at fatty*).  This year I'm going to play things by ear. I highly doubt that a half distance will be in store this year. Maybe next year. I don't want to do a half in Las Vegas.

LEG WEAKNESS QUESTION!!

Yesterday I went for my run and I finished what I wanted to do (30 minute run). Then I started walking and stretching a little bit then all of sudden I got this huge cramp in my right calf. It feels like my muscles would not relax, and remained contracted. A bit of ice, then some rolling and heating pad (ice doesn't seem to help at all, but Heat did). It seems better.  It is NOT injured, just a cramp.

Then I looked at my logs, and saw that just a few days ago that I did the bike drills, and saw that I am weaker in my right leg than my left.  It felt harder to do in my right leg. Not much, but just enough that I noticed that.

I'm curious if the two is correlated. Could I have gotten the cramp because of the weakenss?
Is there something (isolating leg exercise)  that I can do to strengthen my right leg better?

in case anyone missed it.... new boston standards here.

i'd link the baa site,  but ya can't get to it right now.... i  wonder why?   ;-)

edit....  LOL,  now the boston globe link above is down too.

The Boston Athletic Association announced new qualifying times and new registration procedures for the Boston Marathon this morning. Both go into effect for the 2012 and 2013 marathons. In 2012, the BAA will institute rolling admission for qualifiers with the fastest runners being allowed to enter first. The field will be filled with the fastest of all qualifiers.

Then, in 2013, the BAA will lower qualifying times by five minutes across all age groups and both genders. The rolling admission process also will remain in place for 2013 and future marathons, continuing to allow the fastest runners to enter first.

The new qualifying times and registration procedures come in response to the 2011 Boston Marathon selling out in a record 8 hours and 3 minutes in October. With the race filling so quickly, thousands of qualifiers were unable to register. After the record sellout, the BAA began reviewing its registration process and researching options to make race entry more fair in the future, not just a sprint to the online registration page. The BAA
believes its new formula is the fairest option that best serves the running community and stays true to the marathon’s history as a race for qualifiers.

BAA Executive Director Tom Grilk, race director Dave McGillivray and Director of External Affairs Guy Morse plan to discuss the new qualifying times and rolling admission procedures at 11: 30 this morning.

Kinda early for you to be tired Fatty.  Are you getting enough sleep? eating enough of the good stuff?  weight loss is a balancing act when you are working as hard as you are right now.

In Fatty's defense... I can see perfectly well why he is tired! As I was telling him, I've never seen him do such consistent training for so long, so that is going to add up. And sleep? Ha ha!! With three small kids? Heck, my two "older" kids still come and bug us in the middle of the night, so I can't imagine just how few uninterrupted nights of sleep John actually gets. (What say you, big guy?) Add to that the full-time job and it's no surprise to me that he's feeling run down.

So John... do think about recovery, which we talked about quite a bit a few pages back. And good nutrition does make a difference. I noticed last year if I didn't re-fuel well after a big effort, I would feel like crap the next day (usually I felt it in my morning swims). Was thinking this morning -- how are you about hydrating? I find it so very hard to drink the water I need in the winter. I get to the end of the day and realize I've not had much to drink but have sweat out quite a bit -- not good. I try to carry water bottles everywhere, and I drink herbal tea in the afternoons and evenings, but I always feel like I am playing catch-up. And if you do ever have time to grab a nap, go for it! Even 15 minutes can be huge.

Keep up the great work. I am really impressed by your training thus far and can't wait to watch you race!!! Yay!!!!!
