Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by Asalzwed No...I don't disagree. I think if you do a little shorter version, as you defined above and take the WU and CD seriously, it's alright. Do you know what your threshold pace is? (85% V02 max) Why I am asking is because you don't want to do that tempo too fast. For me, a 10K pace would be on the fast end for a tempo run.
Also, Felicia, how many MPW are you @ typically? I don't know any of my zones or VO2 stuff. You know it's impossible for me to run "fast," right? When I've done it before, after warming up, I do one mile at 10 mpm, and then aim for 9:30 mpm in the second mile. That's it. All I have is my Ironman watch (thank you, TJ), so I'm not keeping a constant eye on it while I'm running. Typically 20-25 miles per week, sometimes up toward 30, but usually right around 25. I'm aiming for 80-100 mpw this summer. 100 is proving to be tough to get to for me this summer if I taper before my races (which is what happened in May). I should say that I also don't do this "tempo" run even every week, maybe every two or three weeks. I just feel like I need to try to hit that 9:30/mile pace every once in a while so I know what it feels like. If I don't do it sometimes in training, how could I hope to hit it in a race. Which is why I was really interested in what you said about Hanson's method -- all of that tempo work seems like a good idea to me. Edited by KansasMom 2013-06-05 4:13 PM |

I tend to look more at what I want to get out of the workout as opposed to exactly matching this theoretical road. What roads are people running on that are perfectly flat all the way through anyway? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by brigby1 That one is probably ok to fit in if your recent longer runs have gone well, I only looked at the volume. There haven't been as many longer runs more recently, but you have had several of tempo workout length in the same week and a bigger one in there. (Looking at the calender instead of the blog can be very helpful in seeing this kind of thing) Like Adrienne, I wonder about the pace as well, but this can vary by individual. I look at them based off of threshold effort as opposed to a race pace. With race pace, the effort changes as the ability of the runner changes. 10k would be harder than I'd like to run a tempo, more in range of cruise intervals. But wouldn't be at as high of an effort for someone at say an hour for the race. Also, I see this as a 2 mile tempo run as that is the size of the tempo. You'll want to be mindful of both that and the overall size of the workout. The tempo is the focus. The warm-up is to get you ready to run that, so is whatever you need to do so you're ready at the start. Then the cool-down to help bring your body back down. So it would be a 6 mile run with a 2 mile tempo. Right, because only two miles are at tempo. My long runs go pretty well, for the most part. This summer especially, I am not doing a long run every week. I'm just trying to hold onto my 10 mile fitness during this season and then will kick it back up in September. I'm trying to use that long run time this summer to work on that blasted bike fitness. |

LOL I'm thinking of doing a 15k on the 4th of July. It's a point to point -- we start in the town 9 miles to the north of us and run straight down the highway to our town. The only elevation gain is going to be the couple short bridges over a couple streams/rivers. Maybe 15 feet of elevation? And that gain may be offset by the fact that our town actually sits in a hole, so the whole race may actually be running downhill just slightly. I'm kind of looking forward to it for that reason. Now, if the wind would just be blowing from the north that morning (fat chance), I could make some serious time. |

Start at 5 ft above sea level, gain 3 feet in entire run, then return to the start place. Yeah, that's right, 3 feet!!!! ETA: I just checked today's run. I went from 10 ft to 11 ft and back to 10. 1 ft change! Edited by cdban66 2013-06-05 4:53 PM |

I just checked and we are at the southern most point of the Trop Storm warning. I'll be at the YMCA tomorrow, running or riding in place, unless I can get out in the morning before the rain starts. We should see 2-4 inches. |

I'm actually pretty happy there. I think it was November or December last year where I hit 117 for the month. With all my big talk and dream of running ultra races, realistically, it ain't gonna happen. I don't even see a marathon in my future. Ever. I'm okay with that. Okay. Maybe not so okay. There is this trail marathon that I really, really, really want to do. From what I can tell, running that marathon is the only way to get to some of those trails because they are closed, and there are some cool canyons and petroglyphs. But realistically. No marathons. |

I thought you meant month, I even starting typing a reply, then thought of the ultra thing and that this is summer and you might have time now, so I kept quiet. No marathons for me either. Unless I do the Goofy Challenge or Dopey Challenge at some point in my life, and that sure ain't happening anytime soon. |

They are from Singapore. They have no one supporting here so I am now their cheer squad! Of course I offered my wetsuit stripping help in T1... And we exchanged phone numbers. I love this sport! Very cool, way to be a great ambassador! |

The one "flat" piece of road is 1 mile long and has an elevation gain of 10'. When I first started riding my bike I would ride to this road and then go back and forth along it for like 20 minutes and then ride home. I got some weird looks. Originally posted by amd723 Originally posted by KansasMom Yeah, come to Florida I'll show you some of those runs! Originally posted by brigby1 Umm, well . . . Actually, I had the elevation tool activated on mapmyfitness the other night, and on my 9.5 mile run through town, I think I did gain 50 feet in there somehow. The slight incline has helped a little for treadmill running, but still not quite the same. I tend to look more at what I want to get out of the workout as opposed to exactly matching this theoretical road. What roads are people running on that are perfectly flat all the way through anyway? I was probably exaggerating about the 50feet gain. I just ran almost five, and I checked the elevation gain --- 7 feet. No wonder I suck at hills. I guess I'm lucky where I'm located. Depending how you feel on a given day you can go very hilly or more rolling hilly. There are a few flat-ish areas like the rail trails (trains don't like steep grades, go figure), but mostly constant elevation changes. I like that, it keeps rides and runs interesting. |
